chapter - 1 The homecoming - Rosalie arrives to reclaim her father's empire
The car came to a slow, deliberate stop in of the towering glass building. Rosalie calder stepped out of the car not anxious but calm and relaxed. Her gaze remained fixed on the structure ahead- the empire that once carried her father's name, his sweat, blood his sleepless nights..... and his dreams. Now it stood cold and untouchable filled with betrayal of people he once called Friends and partners. she tightened her fingers around the strap leather bag she carried. " They indeed took every damn thing"... she murmured under her breath . The driver looked at her through the mirror and called out.." miss calder we're here". Her voice was calm but beneath it lay something sharp, something dangerous. Rosalie pushed the door open and stepped out, her black heels meeting the polished ground with quiet authority. The breeze tugged lightly on her hair, but she didn't bother fixing it. Her focus was locked ahead. Every step she took towards the building felt like walking into a battlefield because that was exactly what this was. war. Once she got inside the atmosphere shifted immediately. Employees moved quickly, whispers trailing behind her like shadows. "is that her ?" "I heard she came back..." "The daughter" Rosalie ignored them completely. Let them talk. let them wonder. She wasn't here to announce herself - she was here to take back what rightfully belongs to her. The elevator ride to the top floor felt longer than it should have. The higher she went, the tighter the knot in her chest became. Not fear. Never fear. Just anticipation. The door slid open and there it was - the boardroom where it all had been stolen. The moment she stepped inside it went silent. Everyone turned towards her. Some curious, some uneasy and some outright hostile. Men her father trusted sat around that table as if they owned it. As if they deserved it. Rosalie’s lips curved slightly—not in warmth, but in quiet defiance. “Good morning,” she said, her voice steady. “Did I miss anything important?” A few exchanged glances. Then, a slow clap echoed through the room. Rosalie’s gaze shifted. And that was when she saw him. Marcus. He leaned back in his chair like he owned the world, his expression unreadable, his presence commanding. There was something dangerous about him—something that made the air feel heavier. His eyes locked onto hers. Sharp. Assessing. Unforgiving. “Well,” he said slowly, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “Look who finally decided to show up.” Rosalie held his gaze without flinching. “I could say the same,” she replied coolly. A flicker of interest crossed his face. “Bold,” Marcus said. “Considering you have no power here.” Her chin lifted slightly. “That’s where you’re wrong.” Silence stretched between them. Tense. Charged. Something unspoken passed in that moment—something neither of them understood yet, but both felt. And it wasn’t just hostility. One of the older men cleared his throat. “Miss Calder, this is a private board meeting—” “It used to belong to my father,” she cut in smoothly. “Which makes it my business.” A few shifted uncomfortably. Marcus’s gaze never left her. “You think walking in here changes anything?” he asked. “No,” Rosalie said, stepping closer to the table. “But it’s a start.” Her eyes swept across the room, landing on each face. “I know what you did,” she continued quietly. “Every stolen share. Every forged signature. Every lie.” The tension thickened. Someone scoffed, but it sounded forced. Marcus leaned forward now, resting his elbows on the table. “And what exactly are you going to do about it?” he asked. Rosalie met his gaze again. There was no hesitation in her voice. “I’m taking it all back.” A beat of silence. Then Marcus chuckled softly, shaking his head. “You’re either very brave,” he said, “or very foolish.” Rosalie’s lips curved faintly. “Maybe both.” For a moment, something shifted in his expression. Not mockery. Not dismissal. Something… intrigued. The meeting dissolved soon after, but the war had already begun. As the others filed out, Marcus remained behind. So did Rosalie. The air between them felt different now—quieter, but heavier. “You shouldn’t have come back,” he said finally. She turned to face him fully. “And leave everything to thieves?” she shot back. “That doesn’t sound like me.” Marcus studied her carefully. “You don’t understand how things work here.” “Then I’ll learn.” Their eyes locked again. Closer now. More intense. There was something about him—something she couldn’t quite place. Beneath the arrogance, beneath the coldness… there was depth. Pain, maybe. But she pushed the thought away. He was still her enemy. “Stay out of my way, Marcus,” she said softly. His jaw tightened slightly. “Or what?” Rosalie stepped closer. Close enough to feel the tension between them rise. “Or you might lose more than you expect.” For a split second, neither of them moved. The space between them felt charged—like something dangerous was about to spark. Then Marcus smirked, though his eyes remained serious. “I’d like to see you try.” Rosalie turned and walked out without another word. But as she stepped into the hallway, her heart was no longer calm. Because this wasn’t going to be easy. Not with enemies like them. Not with Marcus standing in her way. And definitely not with the way his presence lingered in her mind. Behind her, Marcus remained in the boardroom, staring at the door she had just walked through. His expression had changed. No longer amused. No longer indifferent. Something else had taken its place. Something dangerous. “Rosalie Calder…” he muttered under his breath. For the first time in a long while— He felt challenged. And he wasn’t sure if he wanted to crush her… Or get closer to her.
