Preface
There's a thick scent of death in the air. A rancid taste of rotting flesh hits my tongue with each breath. My eye catches a flash of neon green through the trees ahead. I whisper a charm Delilah, a sorceress, once taught me. As I repeat the mantra, the effects of the spell work fast. Looking at my hand disappearing is one of those sights that gives me the creeps every time. Unnatural, but at this moment, necessary. Still, becoming invisible is the easy part. Now I have to get closer without making a sound or kicking up dust. As I creep through the shrubs, the source of the flash comes into view. Chained to a tree, two bodies are slumped, barely clinging to what little life they have left. The green glow illuminates the opening of the forest as a hideous creature pulls the life essence from one of its victims. This soul sucking demon is holding an amulet tight in one hand, with its other stretched toward the lifeless ladies. The green light is a magic stream channeling the spirit to the warlock, as it chants incantations in its native hellion tongue. The bodies he's slowly draining, shrivel before my eyes. It's impossible to guess the age of the two females.cThey could be fifteen or fifty for all I can tell. They look like skeletons covered in dry wrinkled skin. I wonder how long he's been keeping these two from their final breath. The foul bastard. I can't take the sight anymore. These two deserve a quick death. There's no coming back from this point. Why didn't I study the healing arts when the monks offered that elective class? They'll be dead before I can drag them out of this forest. I reach for a pair of daggers hidden in my cloak. With expert precision, I send them flying straight into the hearts of these two tragic beings, instantly severing the connection the necromancer holds. I haven't cast a spell yet, so my charm is still in place. The warlock swings his body around expecting to find someone in the path of the fireball he sends flying in my direction. The heat singes my beard as I lean my body to the right, narrowly escaping a faceful of flame. Did I move my feet? As I wonder if I kicked a bush, the necromancer in front of me scans the treeline around him looking for any movement. He starts backing into the brush. It's now or never. I slam my staff into the ground, commanding the roots to take hold around the warlocks feet......
