Chapter 4

2240 Words
The Unfaithful When she arrived at the house she shared with her husband, she took everything out into the garden, throwing every little thing that belonged to Rick outside, so that the only thing left inside were Candy's things. She set them on fire, sitting down to watch everything burn. That's how she wanted to see him, even her sister, burning. Candy suffered greatly. Shortly after being married, she realized that her husband had been unfaithful with her little sister for several months. How could she face something like that? Alcohol didn't help; it only led her to do something crazy when she ended up in another man's bed. She loved Rick and suffered for what she did to him. A night of passion with someone else only momentarily calmed the anger of that day. Alaric Jackson was just a blurry memory of one night. The neighbors called the firefighters, and in turn, the couple's parents arrived, believing that they were on their honeymoon and that their house was burning. When Mr. Johnson and the Webers arrived, they were quite surprised to see Candy there. Her forehead was beaded with sweat, her expression that of a deranged woman, and the glow of the fire reflected on her face made the good and kind Candy look dangerous and wild. "But my girl!" Her mother, Savannah, ran to her side, took her away from the fire, and moved her so the firefighters could work. Mr. Weber took a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped her daughter's forehead, neck, and shoulders. "Something has happened," said Dixon, Candy's father. "She should be on her honeymoon, but she's here, with a tremendous fire that she set. Where is Rick?" "Where is my son?!" Juliette Johnson ran up to Candy, trying to get answers. Candy's eyes were fixed on the water falling towards the fire, extinguishing everything, taking away the beauty of what was burning. Julie grabbed her daughter-in-law's chin, raised her hand, and hit Candy with a hard slap that echoed across the garden. Savannah pulled Julie away from her daughter. "Don't hit my daughter!" "Where is my son?!" Mr. Johnson stood apart from everyone, outside the garden, alongside the other spectators. If his daughter-in-law was here, he could only imagine what had happened to his son, what he had done to his recent wife, or what she had discovered about him. His son was not a saint. "He's with Lexi," Candy finally spoke. Her husband was with her sister. She burst into tears, seeking comfort from his father. "Tell us, Candy. What happened? Why are you here? How come Rick is with your sister? It can't be possible. Lexi is with Martha; she is giving birth, accompanying her." "Dad, there was a change in my tickets, and Rick could leave, but I couldn't. How I managed it doesn't matter, but he believed I would arrive later. I found him in the hotel room along with Lexi." Savannah started to laugh; obviously, the smoke and heat had greatly affected Candy. She said incoherent and absurd things. "Your husband and your sister?" Julie couldn't make sense of her words. Candy had never been liked by Julie; she found her too simple, with a flat beauty. Sometimes she felt Candy was too cold for her son; he needed a loving woman, not someone who competed with him in everything. In short, Candy Weber was too much of a woman and at the same time not enough for Rick Johnson. To everyone's surprise, Rick arrived on the scene. "My things... did you burn my things?" The firefighters had already finished; the remains could not even be distinguished. A black pile of charcoal was all that remained of his belongings. "You burned my trophies!" Rick was a great player on the local American football team, among other sports. He had played since high school, in college, and then left it. He was not interested in a more professional career, but he loved that sport and all his achievements were more than sacred to him, which he always boasted about whenever he had the opportunity. "The trophies, the medals, every damn photo! Your f*****g uniform! All of it! Everything already burned, and I enjoyed it." "b***h!" Rick's quick strides took him towards her. Mr. Johnson ran there, but he couldn't reach his son before Candy was attacked. She fell to the ground, and Mr. Weber couldn't do much against Rick's beastly body. He grabbed her by the hair and dragged her a few meters before Theo Johnson arrived. "She slept with an unknown man on our honeymoon! I found her with him, and she didn't deny it!" After a couple of minutes of struggles, screams, and more, the divided family calmed down, entering the house to talk like "civilized" people. The parents were dismayed; their children had just begun their marriage, and everything was already going wrong. "Candy has to speak first," her father demanded. "Why do you say Lexi was with your husband? I just called her, and she is already on her way." "Well, let's wait for that little b***h!" Through tears, Candy couldn't see Rick. Her head hurt, and she had felt him pulling out all her hair. She had bruises on the back of her neck and both cheeks. Rick had become very angry when he saw that she had burned all of his things. Candy knew that would hurt him, but if she had known that Rick would be there, she wouldn't have dared to commit such a feat. That was dangerous, knowing he would go crazy. When Lexi got home, Candy threw a shoe at her, watching as the little fox with an angelic face entered. "And what's wrong with my sister?" She pretended not to know anything about what was happening there. "You sit down and shut up!" their mother ordered her. Lexi sat as far away from her sister as possible, next to Mr. Johnson. "Who will speak first?" Theo asked. "I want this matter to end quickly, because I am not up for this trouble." Candy stood up, placing herself in the center of everyone. "Lexi and Rick have been together for a few months," he said. "I arrived at the hotel where I was supposed to spend one of the best weeks of my life and what I found was an image that I will never forget. Lexi is in bed with my husband. They confessed to me that they had been dating or seeing each other secretly for more than six months.” Rick laughed, a mocking laugh, echoing everywhere. Lexi leaned against her father's shoulder; the parents remained silent. It was still absurd. "Can I talk now?" Rick waited patiently. "Are you tired of talking stupid things yet? I haven't seen Lexi since the wedding, right now, when she just arrived. And in case you didn't know, Candy is a slut! We argued over a small thing at the hotel, that she didn't like the place, that I arrived before her, and she left me! She went to a bar and came back with a man. I got very worried that night and went out like crazy to look for her, until early in the morning, one of the girls at the hotel notified me that my wife had arrived hours ago, but with another man. The same one he spent the night with. I wanted to confront her when we met in the elevator and…she…confessed everything to me. The worst thing is not that, he comes here, burns my things, accuses Lexi of something she has no idea about, and tries to make you believe her, do you know why?" "You're a liar!" "Shut up, you already spoke! I will tell the truth about who you really are! I don't know who I married, the woman I saw was another, the same one who is here and I can't recognize her. I was a fool to believe she was in love with me. She just wants my money!" "I have money!" She was going to go towards him, but her mother stopped her. "No more than me, baby. No more than me. What you don't know is that Candy forced me to sign a prenuptial agreement. In which I lose everything if I divorce her." The murmur began with her parents. Rick's move was masterful; it was perfect. "And you can't imagine all the strange clauses there are, and I signed while in love, without knowing her intentions. But I swear I won't let her keep what belongs to me. She is the damn devil of contracts. I don't know why she didn't wait a little longer; at least she should have pretended for longer, but she couldn't stand it. On our honeymoon, she sleeps with another man! Our honeymoon! A certain Alaric Jackson!" Candy's eyes widened when she saw that Rick knew the man's name. "Do you see that she doesn't even deny it?! She does not deny it!" "I slept with him after seeing you with Lexi!" she had just admitted that she slept with another man. "But Candy!" her horrified mother took her by the hands. "Stop lying! He wasn't with Lexi; she hasn't left the country!" "Mom...please. I tell you I saw them." "I see what this is about." Mr. Johnson stood up from his seat, speaking. "I didn't expect this family to be like this, and I really thought I saw Candy in love. I don't know how my son was so stupid to sign a prenuptial agreement with that devil's advocate; you have to be stupid! If you think you trapped my son, I will get the best lawyers to check everything and void that damn agreement. You won't keep a single penny of what belongs to the Johnsons." "Mr. Johnson, he was the one who made me write the agreement." It was hardly credible. In front of his parents, Rick was only muscles, little brains, and Candy was a brilliant lawyer who could get her way by making Rick sign that agreement, especially if no one believed the story that he was sleeping with Lexi, the innocent little Lexi, his sister-in-law. "And I don't want his money." "Well, let's get this agreement annulled, and your good faith will be clear." Mr. Johnson's blue eyes focused on his daughter-in-law's. "What do you say, Candy? Let this remain a simple divorce; the sooner... the better." "No." Rick stood next to his father. "I'm in love with Candy, despite everything she put me through, the way she destroyed my heart, and how interested she is. For me, the agreement is not nullified; she is my wife! And if she wants a divorce, some clauses have to be met. Even if I love her, my heart deserves a reward for the harm she did to me." "I won't give you a single cent! Say something, Lexi!" "Dad, Mom. She is crazy. This is something you have to solve as a couple, and I have nothing to do here. I'm leaving." Lexi, who had already made a plan with Rick on the way to the country, momentarily ignored all that. No one could believe Candy's story, or it would be Rick who would lose a lot of money, really a lot of money. "See you at home." In the middle of that room, with the house still smelling of smoke, Candy was left without support. Her mother did not forgive her for involving her little sister, and her father was not able to believe the crazy story his daughter told. Rick won. "So what's next? You're the lawyer." The corners of her lips widened. "Nothing will be done here until our lawyer reviews said prenuptial agreement and sees its validity," said Mr. Johnson, took his son's hand, and led him out of that house. Julie, Rick's mother, approached her daughter-in-law with a stern expression. "What a b***h you are, Candy. I never liked you, and now much less. You will not take a single cent from my son. I'll make you go without, you creep. I already said that there was something about you that I didn't like. Fortune hunter!" "And you, useless old woman!" "Who are you calling useless?!" "To you who didn't know how to raise your son! He's the gold digger here, not me!" "You're leaving right now!" "I paid for this house! The same reason why I didn't set it on fire with everything inside. You get out of my house! Everyone get out! And you too! Go away with that b***h Lexi and her damn 'I didn't do it' face!" They all left, kicked out by Candy. She closed the door and threw herself on the floor, exhausted from screaming. She had to prove that Lexi and Rick were lovers before Rick took half of everything she had. She couldn't allow him to humiliate her like that with such a lie. He was the unfaithful one, at least first than her. Rick knew the name of the man Candy slept with, and she couldn't deny that fact. You could say that he had advantages from the situation. At that precise moment, Candy was on the losing end. Lose everything. Could Rick prove that Candy and Alaric Jackson spent the night together that night? If so, there was a clause that indicated what was going to happen. And Rick knew it.
