Chapter 22
The escape tunnel stretched for nearly half a mile before opening into an abandoned maintenance bunker beneath the old railway tracks.
The heavy steel door groaned shut behind them.
For the first time in what felt like days…
There was silence.
No gunfire.
No explosions.
No footsteps chasing them.
Only the sound of everyone catching their breath.
Sheriff Brooks lowered himself onto an old wooden crate, his injured shoulder throbbing.
Claire found a dusty lantern and managed to light it.
Its warm glow filled the bunker.
Ethan set the laptop carefully on an old workbench.
“The encryption will take some time.”
The loading bar on the screen barely moved.
Decrypting Project Phoenix… 2%
“We’ve got a little while,” he said.
Brooks closed his eyes.
“I’m going to get some rest.”
Claire nodded.
“I’ll keep watch.”
Within minutes, the bunker grew quiet.
⸻
Amora wandered toward the far end of the room.
There was an old metal staircase leading to a small observation platform.
She climbed it slowly.
Above her, tiny cracks in the ceiling allowed moonlight to filter inside.
It wasn’t much.
But after everything they’d survived…
It felt peaceful.
She wrapped her arms around herself.
“So this is where you hide.”
Ethan’s voice made her smile before she even turned around.
He climbed the last few steps and stood beside her.
Neither of them spoke.
They simply looked through the cracked opening toward the night sky.
After a long silence, Ethan finally spoke.
“I almost didn’t make it out.”
Amora swallowed.
“I know.”
“I saw the roof collapse.”
“I thought…”
Her voice broke.
“I thought I lost you.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I’ve spent years blaming myself for losing Noah.”
His eyes glistened in the moonlight.
“I don’t think I could survive losing someone else.”
Amora turned toward him.
“You won’t.”
He gave a faint smile.
“You sound very sure.”
“I am.”
She stepped closer.
“When I came back to Blackwood, I thought I was coming here for answers.”
She laughed softly.
“Instead…”
“I found someone who refused to let me face this alone.”
Ethan looked away.
“I wasn’t very welcoming at first.”
“You were impossible.”
He laughed.
His first real laugh since they’d met.
“I was.”
She reached for his hand.
This time…
He didn’t hesitate.
Their fingers intertwined naturally.
Comfortably.
As though they’d been meant to fit together all along.
“I’ve been scared,” Amora admitted.
“Every day.”
“So have I.”
“I keep wondering who’s next.”
“My family.”
“My friends.”
“You.”
Ethan gently lifted her chin.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“I can’t promise this will end the way we want.”
“I can’t promise we’ll never get hurt.”
His thumb brushed lightly across her cheek.
“But I can promise one thing.”
“I’ll never stop protecting you.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“You already have.”
A single tear slipped down her cheek.
Ethan wiped it away with the back of his fingers.
For a moment…
Neither of them moved.
The distance between them disappeared.
Their eyes searched each other’s faces.
No words were needed.
Amora smiled through her tears.
“I think I’ve been falling for you…”
“…since the day you told me evidence never lies.”
Ethan smiled softly.
“I think I started falling for you…”
“…the moment you refused to give up on your brother.”
Their foreheads touched.
The world outside ceased to exist.
Slowly…
Carefully…
Ethan leaned in.
Amora closed the remaining distance.
Their lips met in a soft, lingering kiss.
There was no rush.
No desperation.
Just relief.
Hope.
And the quiet realization that neither of them had to carry the weight of this fight alone anymore.
When they finally pulled apart, they rested their foreheads together, both smiling.
“I’ve wanted to do that for a while,” Ethan admitted.
Amora laughed.
“What took you so long?”
“You kept getting shot at.”
She laughed harder.
“And whose fault was that?”
“I don’t think we have enough time to list all my mistakes.”
She gently nudged his shoulder.
“We’ll make time.”
⸻
A loud beep echoed through the bunker.
The laptop.
The decryption had finished.
100% Complete
Ethan and Amora hurried back downstairs.
Sheriff Brooks and Claire were already standing around the screen.
The encrypted folder had opened.
Inside were dozens of video files.
Financial records.
Blueprints.
And one document highlighted in red.
Its title sent a chill through the room.
PROJECT PHOENIX
Status: Subject Alive
Amora’s breath caught.
Ethan clicked the file open.
A personnel record appeared on the screen.
Under Subject Name, there was only one entry.
Noah Cole.
A recent photograph appeared beside the file.
It was the same one Adrian had shown them…
But this time, it was clearer.
Noah looked tired.
Older.
But unmistakably alive.
At the bottom of the page, one line stood out above all the others:
Current Location: Blackwood Research Facility – Sector 7
The room fell silent.
Amora stared at the screen, tears streaming down her face.
“He’s alive…”
Ethan squeezed her hand.
“Then we’re bringing him home.”
Outside, far above the bunker, a pair of unseen eyes watched through a hidden surveillance camera.
A red recording light blinked once.
Then the feed went dark.
