Sector 7

Chapter 23 The bunker was silent. No one moved. No one spoke. Amora stared at Noah’s photograph on the laptop screen, afraid that if she blinked, it would disappear. Eight years. Eight years of grief. Eight years of believing she would never see her brother again. And now… He was alive. Her knees nearly gave out. Ethan caught her before she could fall. She buried her face against his chest, overwhelmed by relief and disbelief. “I knew it,” she whispered through tears. “I knew he didn’t leave me.” Ethan held her close. “You never stopped believing.” She pulled back and looked at the screen again. “But why would they keep him alive?” No one had an answer. ⸻ Sheriff Brooks stepped closer to the laptop. “Scroll down.” Ethan did. The file continued. Subject: Noah Cole Project: Phoenix Security Classification: Level Omega Condition: Stable Transfer Status: Pending Amora frowned. “What does ‘transfer pending’ mean?” Brooks’ expression darkened. “It means they’re planning to move him.” “When?” Ethan clicked another tab. A transport schedule appeared. At the top of the page, in bold red letters, were the words: TRANSFER DATE: TOMORROW – 9:00 P.M. Claire gasped. “Tomorrow?” Amora’s heart raced. “If they move him…” “We may never find him again,” Ethan finished. ⸻ Brooks unfolded an old map of Blackwood across the workbench. He pointed to a heavily wooded area outside town. “This is the old Blackwood Research Facility.” “I thought it was abandoned,” Claire said. “It was.” “Officially.” Brooks tapped a section marked Sector 7. “No public records exist for this wing.” “Which means…” Ethan said. “It was never really closed.” Amora clenched her fists. “They’ve been hiding him there all this time.” ⸻ Ethan began studying the facility’s blueprints found in Project Phoenix. “There are four entrances.” “The front gate is impossible.” “Too many guards.” “The loading dock?” Brooks shook his head. “Constant surveillance.” Claire pointed to a narrow tunnel beneath the building. “What about this?” Ethan smiled. “The maintenance tunnel.” “It connects directly to Sector 7.” Brooks nodded. “It was built decades ago.” “Most people don’t even know it exists.” Amora looked at all three of them. “Then that’s how we’re getting Noah out.” ⸻ Hours passed as they planned every detail. Flashlights. Radios. Escape routes. Backup plans. No one wanted to admit what they were all thinking. Someone might not survive. ⸻ Later that night… Unable to sleep, Amora wandered outside the bunker. The forest was quiet. Moonlight shimmered through the trees. She wrapped her jacket tighter around herself. “You always come outside when you’re thinking.” She smiled before turning around. Ethan. He joined her beneath the stars. “You know me too well already.” “I’m trying.” For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Amora reached into her pocket. She pulled out Noah’s old photograph. “I used to carry this everywhere.” “I was afraid I’d forget his face.” Ethan gently looked at the worn picture. “You never did.” “No.” She smiled sadly. “I think I was more afraid he’d forget mine.” Ethan placed a reassuring hand over hers. “If Noah is anything like the brother you’ve described…” “He never forgot you.” Amora looked into Ethan’s eyes. “I don’t know what happens tomorrow.” “Neither do I.” “But I know one thing.” She squeezed his hand. “I’m glad you’re with me.” Ethan smiled. “So am I.” He leaned down and kissed her forehead gently. A quiet promise. Not of victory. But of staying together. ⸻ Hidden several hundred meters away… A tiny drone hovered silently above the trees. Its camera zoomed in on the bunker entrance. Inside a control room at the Blackwood Research Facility, Adrian Voss watched the live feed. He smirked. “They’ve taken the bait.” One of his officers stepped forward. “Should we stop them before they get here?” Adrian slowly shook his head. “No.” He turned toward a reinforced steel door at the end of the corridor. Behind a small observation window sat a man in a gray prison uniform, his wrists restrained. His beard was longer than in the photograph. His face was thinner. But his eyes remained determined. Noah Cole. Adrian smiled coldly. “Let them come.” He looked directly at Noah. “Your sister is walking into the perfect trap.” Noah slowly raised his head. Despite eight years of captivity… He smiled. “You still don’t know my sister.” Adrian’s smile faded. Noah leaned forward just enough to meet his eyes. “When she gets here…” “You’re going to lose.”
