Chapter 5

Roselle looked around the room one more time, her panicked face searching for Ava and Granny. “Where has the patient on bed 3 been transferred to?” The doctor asked a passing nurse. “The operating room. The old lady said she'd donate blood and to prepare for the surgery” Roselle breathed out in relief, following the doctor out of the ward. Thirty minutes later, She sat down in front of the operating room with Granny by her side, the both of them praying for the success of the surgery. Every time the door swung open, Roselle's heart leapt. Every time a nurse passed, she stood up, hoping for some news. Every minute felt dragged, and every hour felt like eternity. When the doors finally opened and doctors walked out after each other, Roselle stood up, her heart thumping fast in her chest. Before she could ask anything, the doctor gave a small reassuring nod. “The surgery was successful” Roselle felt like she could finally breathe and her shoulder slumped down in relief. “Thank you, doctor. Thank you so much” she thanked the doctor profusely. Granny bowed slightly to the doctor. “Thank you, doctor. Can we see her now?” The doctor nodded. They were allowed to see Ava when she was moved to a ward but Roselle's fists curled when she saw that Ava's ward partner was Clara, and her husband was there feeding her an apple. Roselle refused to break. She refused to act concerned, and she became determined that she was only going to think about her daughter. *Two days later Roselle walked through the hallway with a lunchbox in hand, a smile on her face as she walked towards Ava's ward. Over the past two days, Ava had recovered quite well. She had opened her eyes, talked to her, and had been eating well too. Even though Roselle was still mad at Chris, she let him talk to their daughter but was just happy that Ava was responding to treatment, and in a few days, they should be able to leave the hospital. She got to Ava's ward, but the moment she opened the door, she froze. The lunchbox fell from her hand and her lips trembled in shock. Ava's chest was beating unevenly, the monitor was beeping loudly, the green line blurring and moving erratically. Something was happening to her daughter and Clara…. Clara sat down on her bed, her hand on her chin as she watched Ava with a hint of amusement on her face. Roselle rushed into the ward, turning on the code blue emergency button while trying to steady Ava on the bed. “You'll be fine baby, you'll be fine” She assured, but tears only fell down her chin. Doctors and nurses rushed in, making Roselle move to the side while they attended to Ava. In a few minutes, they were able to bring her back to normal, but once again, she had fallen unconscious. “She's fine now, Ms. Hayde. Thank goodness you called it in quickly else she would have been in grave danger” the doctor remarked. Roselle's eyes moved to Clara, deadly and unforgiving. She moved over to her and landed a slap on her face to the shock of everyone. “How could you be so heartless?” Her voice cracked. “You watched her and didn't try to help her, Clara!” Chris walked in behind them amidst the commotion. “What's happening here?” Clara's face turned pitiful immediately, the tears that didn't even blur her vision a second ago, now falling down her cheeks. “I don't know anything about what she's saying, Chris! I don't know why your wife is attacking me” Roselle scoffed, finally seeing Clara's true nature. “You wanted to kill my daughter. You wanted her gone!” Roselle yelled firmly. “Stop being a nuisance, Roselle” Chris appeared beside her, grabbing her shoulder roughly. “Stop trying to frame her for something she didn't do” Roselle stared in shock but it only lasted for a moment. She yanked his hand away, and for once, her eyes cleared. This man she had spent six years waiting for, would never see or believe her when it comes to Clara. She turned back to the doctor, away from Chris. “Doctor, please transfer my daughter. I don't want her to spend another moment with these sickening faces” Roselle spoke without a hint of restraint in her words. As Ava was being wheeled out of the ward, Chris tried to touch Roselle, like he had just realized what he had done. “Roselle, I—” “Don't touch me” She dodged his touch with a smooth calculated move, walking out of the ward without looking back. Ava was transferred to a more secured VIP room, and Roselle was finally rest assured. The day went by in a blur and the next day, Roselle appeared in Chris's office with two sealed documents. “What is this?” Chris asked. He looked up at Roselle with his face filled with curiosity and when he opened the document, let out a dry laugh. “What's this, Roselle?” “I'm sure you can read, Mr. Hayde” Roselle crossed her arms, standing with elegance. “Those are divorce papers” “Sign them” It wasn't a request. It was an order she doesn't expect Chris to have a problem with. “I choose my daughter. Not you anymore” She added. “Wait,” Chris laughed again. “You really want to divorce me?” Roselle said nothing. “All because of one mistake?” Roselle laughed softly as his words echoed in her head. That one mistake almost cost them their daughter's life. That mistake made her realize that there was nothing left to save in her marriage. Without a word, Roselle dropped the second document on his desk. Chris flipped the document open with a frown and his expression tightened. The document contained records. The missed birthdays, the canceled trips, the broken promises. The document held records of every time his family waited, but he was never there for them. “I'm not divorcing you because of that one mistake” Roselle smiled. “But because of all them” “This is ridiculous,” Chris muttered. “I’m tired of being your second choice” Roselle took a step back. “I can't let Ava go through the same thing” She slid her wedding ring off her finger and placed it on the desk. Roselle didn't hesitate before she turned, walking away without looking back. Chris stared at the ring on his desk, unable to say anything. For years, he had believed that Roselle would always be there, waiting, forgiving and loving him. But for the first time, he realized that she was truly done. And by the time he understood what he had lost, Roselle was already gone.
