"Are you ready to walk?" Riley stands up and wipes the dirt off the back of his jeans. I can see small dust clouds form as he pats the back of his thighs and bottom.
My room and Mr. Laurin's office are the only rooms in this mansion that don't get cleaned by the staff. Though the whole staff is sworn to secrecy he still would prefer that the least amount of people know about his dark secrets as possible. Though he likes punishing people, he doesn't want the authorities on his back, the law is a huge thorn in his side.
Riley sticks a hand out to help me up. I grab his hand and we both tug to swing my body upright. "If he isn't going to let the maids clean up this place he could still let someone." He looks around and the piles of dirt and bloodstains around the room.
"You know very well the staff who already know everything are too busy with more important matters." I chuckle, "Except you, why don't you clean up this place when you don't have any patients?"
"Hey! When I'm not stitching up bodyguards, I'm stitching up you."
"Well, you're done stitching me up, got some guards to stitch up now?"
Riley is silent just long enough to know I got him. "No, but I'd much rather hang out with you and Sarah outside then clean up your blood in this room."
To be honest, I'd much rather he hangs with Sarah and I instead of cleaning up my mess too. "Haha, okay. Sounds like a plan."
Riley and I walk down the long halls in the mansion, slowly approaching Sarah's room. "Hey, Sammy."
"Shh. I hear it too." I whisper. Quiet sobs are coming out of Sarah's room. "She's crying".
"You were right, this did hurt her a lot more then I thought." Riley sighs. He looks at me and tilts his head. "Should we go in and comfort her and tell her you're alright or leave her alone for now?"
It was a valid question, I wasn't quite sure what would be best for her right now either. I was quiet for a while. Her sobs were getting quieter, she was calming down. "I think a walk would make her feel better, she is already alone most of the time"
Riley nods and brings a fist up to knock on the door and looks over at me for confirmation that we shouldn't just leave her alone. At the exact time I nod, there is a sound of something falling over and a sound of tugging in the room.
Riley's eyes open wide and he begins to knock fast and hard. "Sarah?!" He yells.
I push him to the side and turn the handle, "it's locked!" I yell. I begin pounding vigorously at the door just as Riley was. "Sarah? Sarah open up!" My heart starts beating really fast.
Riley stands beside me in shock "No..." I hear him say in between my banging. "No, no, no, no!" He gets louder and louder then runs a few steps back. "Out of the way!" He yells at me. I do what he says and move. My legs are shaking and I try not to trip. Riley runs at the door in full speed and hits his shoulder off of it, he jumps into it for an extra boost while doing so. "Damnit!" He screams. "Sarah!" He repeats this action and the door finally gives way. What we saw was Sarah.
We saw her.
We saw Sarah hanging by her scarf. Still swinging back and forth.
Still swinging back and forth from when she jumped off of that chair.
There's the chair, it fell over. I don't know what to do. What am I doing? I'm- am I crying? No. I can't cry.
Why can't I cry?
Riley runs up to Sarah and lifts her and pulls the rope off her neck.
Riley lays Sarah on the floor and puts his ear to her chest.
He lifts his head, looks at me and shakes his head.
"She's dead" Riley closes his eyes and lowers his head.
"We were too late." His shoulders shake and he cries.
I fall to my knees. I stare at her dead body but I don't cry. Riley is crying but I. Don't. Cry.
