An awkward harmony

1453 Words
What could a young girl be doing in the woods all alone?” he wondered Then he went toward her direction and asked what pack she belonged to, but she ignored the question and started weeping like a child. He didn't know what to do as he just stood there and watched her cry. Nonetheless, he felt hurt by her tears. He continued watching as tears fell through her face which suddenly became pale and red. From that moment, he knew something was wrong, but he decided to listen to what she has got to say, rather than concluding. “Can I speak with you for a second please?” He pulled her into his arms and patted her shoulder just to stop her from crying. “What's your name?” He asked in curiosity. “Aurora Mingan,” her voice skipped. She wasn't what he wanted from him, but she was hoping he would be her saving Grace. The name sounded rather odd to Maverick. It was his first time hearing such a name. He doesn’t know the pack that had such a name. To avoid making her cry a river, he desisted from asking her further. While she was quiet, he took a closer observation of the girl and noticed that she was different from the girls he had seen. “Where are you from again?” He asked, but she ignored him this time and felt he was doing too much. He even tried to imagine how she would look in her wolf form. He saw that she had red eyes instead of the green-coloured eyes that other girls had, he also noticed that she had silver hair. There was also a difference in her skin color. It was pure white rather than coloured. He had already concluded within him that she was a Moon goddess and perhaps came to give him a mate as it was their responsibility. Then the thought of asking her about her parents instead of her pack hit his mind. He thought “If I ask her about her parents, perhaps she won't cry. It will also enable me to know the pack she belongs to.” Then he tossed yet another interrogative question, “What about your parents? Are they still alive? Does anyone know you're alone in the woods? It's dangerous out here. You might get killed by wild animals. Have you ever thought about that?” She looked up to him since he was taller than her, and when their eyes met Maverick was sure that something felt different. He felt the urge that she was his, he wanted her and had the urge to keep her safe at all cost. When she looked sideways, he felt like he had been lifted off a spell, he shrugged his shoulders as he waited for her reply. Then she spoke in a very frail voice that sounded like the morning humming of the birds to Maverick, and the voice was soothing to his ears. “I don't recall anything about my family, the only thing I can recall was being abandoned by an old man who suddenly disappeared into thin air and left me stranded again.” Maverick didn't know why, but the thought of her being alone angered him more than it angered her. Maverick noticed that she was no longer sad, and she had accepted her fate the way it came for her because she was casual while talking about how she was abandoned. It then occurred to him that he had the wrong impression about her being a moon goddess. “She's ready to speak. I guess It's time I ask about her Pack again,” Maverick thought. As he was about to ask her about her pack again, Shadow showed up from nowhere and interrupted them. “We went hunting already. What are you still waiting for? Do you realize we have a lot to accomplish today?” Shadow yelled at Maverick in the presence of the mystery. He wasn't scared about the consequences that come with disrespecting the alpha. “Don't speak to me like that in the presence of a total stranger,” whispered Maverick. He would rather not create a scene. At the mention of him returning to his pack, Aurora became sad again. “While you were chatting with your mystery Luna, you never thought about going back to the pack? Now you claim to be done hunting. Make this make sense to me. I guess my presence made you lie about returning to the pack.” Shadow taunted Maverick and made a travesty of him. He was ready to prove a point and humiliate Maverick. Maverick never responded. He held his cool like a perfect gentleman and endured the insult from the shadow. He couldn't stop staring at Aurora. With the sad look on her face, he could boldly tell that she wasn't happy about his potential return. He felt like being with her all day, watching her talk and also protecting her, but he was unable to achieve any of those because of the responsibility dwelling on his shoulders as an alpha. Maverick feared that he might never get to see Aurora again since he had been coming to the woods and that was his first time seeing her. As he turned to leave, a part of him hoped that she was going to hold him back but nothing happened, he could only hear one footstep trailing him, and he was sure that the footstep belonged to Shadow. Then he uttered “I have never seen any girl as beautiful as her. Everything about her is just too perfect”, But there was no response, she just stood there staring at him like a dummy. He knew for sure that there was nothing that interested Shadow more than talking about girls, so not getting a response was awkward. Then he turned and to his utmost surprise, it was Aurora's footsteps, not Shadow's. “This is strange. Where's my friend?” He asked her with a shaky voice. He's never been this anxious all his life. “I thought he told you he was going to get something from the woods? Oh, I get it now. You were engrossed in profound thought and forgot to pay attention.” She responded. Maverick was very embarrassed because he knew that she heard everything he said and then when he summoned courage and looked at her, she smiled Maverick was sure that the wolf in him would rather not look away, he couldn't still understand why she got his attention so much and why his wolf reacted that way to her smile. While he was still processing his thoughts, Shadow showed up and asked him why he had left the spot that he asked him to wait for him in. “You dare not question my movement. Do I need to remind you that I'm the Alpha? Of course, I'm permitted to do whatever I like,” Maverick responded harshly. He also warned Shadow not to invade his privacy ever again. Shadow was astonished because he knew that Maverick never liked bragging about his position in the pack, but as soon as he tore his gaze away from Maverick and looked at Aurora, he understood why. He had always been with Maverick enough to know that Maverick wasn't a staunch advocate for companionship because he had different women gallivanting around him like a housefly. Shadow also remembered when he usually pleads with Maverick to introduce him to women who would like him, some women came to him but would leave him immediately and go after Maverick once they had seen him. He knew that this was different, the Maverick that he knew was always cold and hostile toward has suddenly become warm and meek like a sheep because of Aurora. Disdainfully, shadow gazes at Maverick and Aurora, “I see the both of you were getting along very well and have probably found out that you belonged to each other anyway I wouldn't want to intrude on this beautiful thing you two are having. If you don't mind, I would love to leave.” After listening to Shadow, Maverick questioned himself, “Could she be my mate? Why do I feel so weird around her and my wolf is also happy when I am with her?” He then concluded in his mind that he was going to meet the Gamma and tell him about his feelings. As they were both about to leave, Maverick noticed that something was holding him back. He couldn't understand what was going on and tried so hard to pull himself away.
