Renato sighted carefully and squeezed his trigger. The powder flashed, the pistol kicked in his hand, and he was rewarded by the sight of still another savage tumbling into the cold waters of the cove. He threw the empty gun at Hump, huddled on the floor and struggling to load the other pistol.
“Hurry, fool! Your scalp’s at risk, too!”
Renato flexed his hands. The guns were growing hotter with each shot, and he felt blisters on his palms. The past few minutes had been as bloody as any in his memory.
