Valerie
When I got back from the kitchen, she was gone.
Well, I wasn't bothered. It was her problem if she decided to starve.
I sat down there and ate the breakfast I made for her.
Mr. Hayes walked in around noon, looking tired. There were dark bags under his eyes.
“Good day, Mr. Hayes.”
He nodded as he headed upstairs. “Make something. I'm really hungry.”
“Yes, sir.”
When Mr.Hayes came back downstairs, I set the table for him.
He ate silently and wiped his mouth with the napkin when he was done.
“Thank you, Valerie, the meal was nice.”
Was he thanking me?
Did he hit his head somewhere?
Why was he being nice all of a sudden?
“Thank you, sir,” I said with a small smile.
“I've been at the office,” he began. “My father is in the country. I need to make sure everything is perfect there.
I nodded, not sure of what to say.
He yawned. “I'm really tired. I need some rest,” he said, as he stood up.
“You've gotten your salary, right? I sent it to Maya. She will be the one playing you from now on.”
“About that, sir, I wanted to…”
My phone rang interrupting me. “Excuse me, sir.”
“Valerie, let's talk later.”
“Okay sir”
Maya. Not again.
What does she want now?
“Miss Maya”
“Valerie, I need you to make lunch and bring it over to me. Let the driver bring you.
“Yes ma'am”
“Be quick about it”
I made the dishes and packed them carefully.
“Hi, Mr. Philip. Miss Maya requested you take me to her,”
“Okay. She already informed me.”
When I arrived, I walked to the receptionist.
“Hello, I'm here to see Miss Maya”
“Use the elevator on the right, 5th floor. The door on the left.
“Thank you”
I knocked on door. “Come in,” Maya said from inside.
“Here’s your lunch ma’am,” I said placing it on her table.
“I'll be leaving now, ma’am,”
“No, You won't,” she said.
I halthed in my tracks turning to face her, confusion spreading across my face.
“Is there a problem, Miss Maya?”
“Yes. I can't let you go home alone knowing Hayes is home.”
Oh. So that's was it. I thought.
“So where do I stay?”
I don't know. Sort yourself out. Just don't go home.”
I sighed. As I turned to leave, she spoke again. “You can sit at the waiting area.”
I nodded. “Alright.”
Honestly, I didn't blame Maya for this.
This was better. didn't know what sick game Hayes had hidden under his sleeves. He was being too nice today.
Nicer than he has ever been.
It was almost dark when Maya and I returned home. I made dinner, and we all went to bed.
The following days remained the same after she walked in on Mr.Hayes talking to me again.
It was now one day to the agreed date, and Maya still hadn't paid my salary. I was tensed.
I wasn't ready to fund out what the crime boss was capable of.
I tried talking to Maya, but each time she brushed me off. As hours passed, the more restless I became.
I couldn't sit still.
Is stood in the living room waiting for Maya. I was going to confront her the moment she walked in.
A few hour later, Maya walked in her shoes in hand.
“Good evening ma’am.” She turned to me with l skeptical look.
“Valerie, is there a problem? Why are you standing here?”
“Ma’am, I wanted bro talk to you about the salary. It's been days now, and I really need it.”
“Oh,” she shrugged casually. “Sorry. I don't have the money.”
“Miss Maya, please it's urgent. I'm begging you”
“So, you do know how to beg? She mocked.
“Anyways, it doesn't make much difference now. I don't have it,” she said smugly.
“Now, if you'll excuse me. I need to go to bed. I'm tired.”
She walked away before I could say another word.
I was going to do this the hard way. I would wait for Mr.Hayes. Maybe he would help me.
I stood for hours, but Mr Hayes was nowhere in sight. My eyes kept closing from exhaustion.
I eventually went to bed hopeless.
Tomorrow was the day I was supposed to pay.
I was up early, my mind was a mess I couldn't sleep. It annoyed me to no end that she was sleeping peacefully while holding my money, and there was nothing I could do about it.
I looked out the window and saw Mr.Hayes car outside, which means he returned late. I quickly jumped into the shower, dressed and rushed out.
Mr. Hayes came out first, and I served his breakfast.
“Good morning, sir”
“Good morning, Valerie”
“Sir, there's something I need to talk to you about”
“Go on”
“Miss Maya didn't….”
“Baby!” Maya’s annoying voice called from the stairs. She shoot me a hard glare.
“Why didn't you wait for me,” she asked, feigning sad face.
She had ruined my plans again.
“Sorry, baby, I need to get to the company early.
Mr. Hayes stood up. “Let's talk when I get back, Valerie. I nodded helplessly.
Maya smirked at my helpless expression.
“So, you thought I would give you the opportunity to talk to Hayes about this? She whispered. “Not a chance.”
“Don't even think about it when he gets back.”
I didn't bother replying her. My mind was elsewhere.
My thoughts were racing faster than usual as tried to think of somewhere I could borrow money. I texted a couple of friends, but every response came back negative. At this point, I was losing my mind.
I took a cab back home. Isabelle wasn't home. She had a part time job at a café. I sent her a message.
Let me know when your shift ends. Don't come home yet.
She replied almost immediately. Why?
I can talk right now. Just do as I say.
Alright sis.
I breath in a sigh of relief. I paced around the house.
Maya’s call suddenly came in, and it only fueled my anger. I simply ignored it.
She kept calling.
Eventually, turned of my phone when it got too much.
