Chapter 3

Valerie I stood there, staring at the phone after he hung up. A cold shiver ran through my body. This was a threat, and I was sure he wouldn't hesitate to carry out whatever he was planning. I would get paid in two days, and I'm paying him back immediately. I wouldn't wait for the agreed date. I snapped out of my thoughts when Isabelle knocked on my door. “Dinner’s ready, sis” “Coming!” I splashed cold water on my face and stepped out. “It's not as good as yours, but it's made with lots of love,” “Awwn,” I said, laughing. “Let's eat” We finished dinner and did the dishes together. “Sis, how about we watch a movie? It's been a while since we did that together.” “Okay. That would be great” I needed a distraction to stop my mind from wandering back to the call. We sat down in the living room with blankets and popcorn. I fell asleep before the movie ended. When I woke, Isabelle had already gone to her room. I went back to my room. The moment I lay down, sleep consumed me. The next morning, I went out for a run to clear my head. When I got back, I headed straight for the shower. My phone rang. My boss. Why was he calling? “Good morning, sir ” “Valerie, we will be coming back tomorrow. I need you at the house by four today.” “Okay, sir.” He hung up. Why were they coming back tomorrow? I went out to make breakfast. After that, I went grocery shopping, packed my bags, and went back to the Hayes mansion. Before I got back, Mr Hayes and Maya were already home. I overheard Mr. Hayes saying his father was coming back to the country. He looked tensed. Well, it was understandable. Kace Thorne, the most dangerous mafia leader in the country. He had influence in places beyond this country, and he was great feared. The mansion was more quiet than usual, and I would say I honestly loved this. His father wasn't here yet, but his name had made his son go quiet. The next morning, I was told they were having a guest over for lunch, Mr. Hayes specifically warned me not to make any mistakes. I guess his father was the guest. I was curious to see the man people feared and spoke so highly of. Just as I was about to set the table, I was informed they weren't coming back for lunch anymore. I went simply went about my other chores. I didn't see Maya nor Mr Hayes before going to bed that night. My salary was supposed to come in today, and I had a list of things I had already planned to do with it. I went about my chores as time rolled by. It was noon, and I was yet to receive a credit notification from my bank. That's weird. It usually came in the morning, and there's never been a delay. I'll just wait a little more, maybe before the day is over. I thought. Later in the day, Maya came. “Good day ma’am” “Oh, Look at you,” she said with a smirk. “I'm assuming you're expecting your salary.” I looked up at her, my mind running wild with different thoughts. “Okay, Let's just say Hayes gave me the money and I've used it on these.” She lifted her hands, showing me several shopping bags. My eyes went wide. “You can't do this. That's my salary” “I can, and I have,” she said laughing. “You should have thought about what I'm capable of when you decide to have an affair with my fiancé.” “You know that’s not true. You know there's nothing going on between us,” I said my voice trembling. “Yeah, I know,” she said, flipping her hair. It's just to keep you line, so you don't even think about it.” “This isn’t fair,” I said, biting my lip. “Life isn't fair, Valerie,” she replied, her face expressionless. “You will get your salary in a few days,” she said before walking past me. I rushed to my room, slamming the door behind as I went to my bed and buried my face in pillow. I wonderd how “long a few days” would last before getting my salary. I had just four days to the agreed date with the crime boss. I thought about telling Mr Hayes, but I doubt help me without making a disgusting demands. He was the one who got me into this mess in the first place. I hated this couple. Why did they have to make my life so difficult? They are perfect for each other. I don't know who's worse between them anymore. I couldn't wait to get enough money and leave here forever. Maya knocked on my door again at 3am for chicken soup. The same soup she called horrible. I wanted to protest and remind her of her words, but decided against it. She had my money and I didn't want her delaying it any further. I carried the soup to her when I was done. “Sorry, I'm not hungry anymore,” she said with a small smile. She wasn't sorry. She knew exactly what she was doing. I nearly lost my cool at that point. What was wrong with her? How did she have the energy to wake in the middle of the night for this? “Okay ma’am. No problem,” I said, smiling too. She wasn't going to get the satisfaction she desired from me. The smile on her face was gone immediately. She definitely wasn't expecting that. She slammed the door in my face, and I turned away with a smirk. Now we had both gotten on each other's nerves. But I was still pissed. Maya was the only in the dinning this morning. I guessed Mr Hayes didn't come back last night. “Good morning, ma'am,” I greeted cheerfully. She scoffed, a deep frown settling on her face. “My breakfast,” she demanded. “Coming right up ma’am.”
