The next morning, while the rest of the family was still waking up, Emma wandered to the edge of the clearing. That’s when she saw it—a small creature no bigger than a rabbit, hiding behind a bush. Its fur was a soft purple, and its eyes were wide and golden. It had tiny, shimmering wings and a little leaf-shaped crown atop its head.
“Hello,” whispered Emma, crouching down to get a closer look. The creature stared at her nervously but didn’t run away.
“You’re not like any animal I’ve ever seen,” Emma continued, her voice gentle. “Are you lost?”
The creature blinked, then stepped forward tentatively. It made a soft chirping sound, almost like it was trying to talk. Emma gasped. “You *can* understand me, can’t you?”
The creature nodded—*it could* understand her!
“I’ll help you,” Emma promised. “Wait right here. I’ll go tell my family.”
Emma raced back to the campsite, where the rest of the family was cooking breakfast. Out of breath, she shouted, “Mom, Dad, you have to come with me! I found a magical creature!”
Sam laughed. “Magical creature? Yeah, right, Emma.”
“Come on, I’m serious!” Emma insisted. Her eyes were wide, and something about her excitement made everyone pause.
Dad exchanged a glance with Mom. “Alright, lead the way, kiddo.”
Emma led her family to the spot where she had seen the creature, and to everyone’s surprise, it was still there. The tiny creature peeked out from behind the bush and chirped nervously when it saw the rest of the Willows.
“It’s real,” Lucy whispered in awe.
“I told you!” said Emma proudly.
Mom knelt down, her face softening as she looked at the creature. “What are you doing out here all alone?” she asked, not expecting an answer.
But then the creature chirped again and flapped its little wings. Suddenly, a soft voice filled the air, though its mouth didn’t move.
“My name is Bramble. I’ve lost my way.”
The family gasped.
“You can talk!” Sam exclaimed.
Bramble nodded, the golden crown on his head glinting in the sunlight. “Yes, and I need your help. I’m from the Heart of the Forest, but something is wrong. I can’t find my way back. The trees... they’re moving.”
