Ethan's POV
It only took me about twenty-five minutes to find Leona. I knew I was in the right spot when I found her car in the driveway of a double wide in a small trailer park. They weren't run down, but the trailers weren't new either. It made sense she lived only about ten minutes from the factory the pack owned. Some of us worked there with the humans to keep tabs on everything and ensure there weren't any suspicions being raised.
Leona and Brock were outside. She was sitting in a lawn chair and Brock was sliding down a small slide for toddlers. Climbing up the steps, sliding down and then doing it again. His laughter filled the air and put a large smile on Leona's face. She was so beautiful the sunlight reflected off her hair and her small giggles reached my ears as she laughed, with Brock unable to take her eyes off him and his joy-filled moments.
I played down on my stomach in the tall weeds that lined the side of her yard and watched content with just being that close to her for now. I am not sure how long I watched them but the sun began to set, creating shadows and a chilly wind. Leona walked over to pick up the happy toddler and took him inside. Her trailer being on the corner and now dusk afforded me the opportunity to get a little closer so I could still hear what was going on. I trotted over quickly and laid against the end of her trailer.
She put on some cartoons for Brock. After a moment or two, I heard some pans clank and make noise. I assumed she was making dinner for them. After a while, I heard her talking to Brock, telling him about the food, and then they were quiet for a while before it went silent for a moment before I heard running water. She told Brock it was time for his bath and gave him one and then I heard her humming to him for a few moments and I assumed she placed him in bed. He was a really good toddler. He didn't really throw any fits and was calm. You could tell he was a momma's boy.
I heard her open and close the fridge and then walk towards the end of the house where I was laying just outside. I heard the water turn on. It ran for a while. She must have a larger tub in here for her to take a bath in. The scent of lavender filled my nose. She must like it and have a bubble bath in that or wash. I knew I had smelled it on her before. I could hear her moving and splashing around some. There was a window in the corner. I am sure if I looked into it I would see her in all her glory. As much I wanted her, to see her, I wanted her to give herself to me. I would not dare peek at her.
I longed to feel and know what she was thinking of right now. When mates complete the bonding process, you share your feelings with each other and can almost tell what they are thinking. At least that is what I have always heard. I am not sure the effects would be for her, being a human. After a few more moments, I heard a phone dialing. Who was she calling right now? It began ringing loudly, she must have put the phone on speaker.
"Hello?" came a woman over the phone. Leona did't say a word? "Hello?" she asked again.
"Hello, yes can you put AJ on the phone please?" Leona said monotonically. She called her husband and a woman had answered his phone and, from the way she spoke, Leona did not know this woman.
"Yeah one minute, he just got in the shower." the strange woman told Leona. . "Baby, your phone rang, it said Brock's mom so I answered it in case he needed something . . . " the woman said, still holding the phone to her ear while she spoke to AJ and called him baby. My blood was beginning to boil.
"You what?" I heard AJ yell at the unknown woman. Then it was dead slience.
I heard the tub begin to drain and the splashing of Leona getting out of the shower. Once the tub was empty and the draining sounds stopped, I could hear her. She was sobbing. My blood ran hot. I wanted to shred AJ. I wanted to rip him limb from limb with my teeth and let him lye there and bleed out. I was seeing red hearing my mate crying so hard, hearing her heart break from the outside wall. I am not even able to comfort her! I was pacing back in forth in the dark at the end of the trailer when her sobs slowed to a stop. I heard her get up and walk through the house.
The TV in the living room clicked on. I ran to the window and I had to look in at her. She laid on the couch staring at the television. Her face was red and splotchy and her eyes were pink and puffy from all her hard crying. She turned the volume really low. She starred at TV but I am not sure she was watching it more like staring through it. I sat there and watched her blankly blink and stare ahead. I was like she was numb or exhausted from all the emotions. Eventually, she dosed off, her blinks getting slower and more frequent. I listened to ensure her breathing was deep, to make sure she was all the way asleep.
I ran back to the tree line and to my mother's for the evening. I was angry and I wanted to kill AJ. I had to tell my mother what I had heard and get her thoughts and see if she had any advice for me. I thought I would have to wait a long time to win my mate over. Maybe not. That comforted me but I hated that she was going through this pain and I couldn't take it away or protect her from it.
