Thrown to the wolves
Leah's POV I froze in the middle of the crowded school auditorium, my dress ripped at the shoulder, sticky with some orange-red juice someone had thrown at me. My chest tightened with every laugh that echoed around me, and my knees trembled so badly I thought I might collapse. I clutched the edges of my dress, trying to cover myself, but it didn’t help. No one was on my side. The projector whirred behind me, casting light across the auditorium. On the screen, my face stared back at everyone, smiling in a way I hadn’t. But the smile wasn’t real. The video had been twisted, edited to make it look like I had seduced my foster brother, Gavin. There were messages, texts, photos… all fake, all designed to destroy me. My throat tightened. “This… isn’t real,” I whispered, though my voice cracked like fragile glass. “Liar!” someone shouted from the back, and a bottle clinked against the floor near my feet. I flinched. The room spun, every face around me twisted with amusement or disgust. From the side of the auditorium, I saw Clara Moore watching... angelic and poised, her long hair gleaming under the harsh lights. Her smile was soft, but I knew better. That smile had teeth. It was smug, cold, and sharp. Clara loved this moment. She had planned it, orchestrated it, and now she was getting her reward. I turned to Gavin. He was standing near the front, pale, lips pressed into a tight line, his hands fidgeting in his pockets. I searched his eyes for something… any hint that he might defend me. “Leah…” he began, his voice uncertain. “You’re pathetic, Gavin,” someone shouted from the back, laughter bubbling over like acid. “You’re actually standing there and doing nothing?” My chest tightened further. My heart sank. I knew. He wouldn’t stand up for me. He had already made his choice. “I… I didn’t know…” Gavin stammered, trying again. Clara’s laugh cut across the auditorium, sharp as broken glass. “Oh, Gavin. You really think you could defend her now?” Her tone was saccharine sweet, but I heard the venom underneath. “You have to pick a side... and you already did. That side isn’t hers.” I felt like the floor beneath me had disappeared. My own foster brother had chosen Clara over me... chosen the girl who had destroyed me, the girl who had whispered lies and made the entire school believe them. My foster parents stood at the edge of the auditorium, their faces red with humiliation. My foster mother’s voice shook with a mixture of anger and shame. “Leah, how could you do this? After everything we’ve done for you?” My throat closed. “Mom! Dad! It’s not true! I didn’t do this!” My father shook his head, disappointment etched into every line of his face. “We believed in you, Leah. And this… this is unacceptable. We can’t protect you from the consequences of your actions.” The words were knives. Every eye in the room burned into me, every whisper, every snicker a reminder of what I had lost. My mouth opened to speak again, to defend myself, but the words died on my lips. No one wanted to hear me. Not the students, not my teachers, not even my own family. Clara stepped forward, her smile still perfect, her voice soft but cutting. “Don’t worry, Leah,” she said. “Everyone will understand soon enough. Your place… will be made very clear.” My chest burned with anger and humiliation. I wanted to scream, to fight, to shove Clara down... but my legs felt like jelly. The room was spinning. The laughter, the whispers, the pointing fingers… it was too much. I had to get out. I had to survive. The auditorium felt suffocating, and when the last bell rang and students began filing out, I slipped out quietly, my bag clutched to my chest. I didn’t go home. I didn’t even think about home. My old life... the one I had known and trusted... was over. I wandered through the empty streets, past the glowing storefronts and flickering streetlights, feeling numb but burning inside. I didn’t know where I would go, only that I had to leave. I ducked into a small corner store, bought a few essentials with the little cash I had, and kept walking, staying in the shadows, avoiding the familiar streets that had become the scene of my public humiliation. I had nowhere to go, but it didn’t matter. I had a plan. My thoughts were a storm, but beneath the fear and heartbreak, a spark of fire ignited. I would not stay broken. I would not stay humiliated. Not now. Not ever. One day, I would return... and I would take back everything that had been stolen from me. My hands trembled as I sat on the steps of a quiet alleyway, trying to breathe, trying to make sense of the chaos that had swallowed my life. I could still hear the laughter echoing in my ears. I clenched my fists, nails digging into my palms, as I whispered under my breath, almost as a promise to myself. “I will come back. And when I do… I will take everything you’ve taken from me.” My voice was barely more than a whisper, but it carried the weight of my pain, my anger, and my resolve. I would leave tonight alone... but I would not run forever. This wasn’t the end… it was the beginning. Somewhere in the dark corners of the town, Clara Moore leaned against a brick wall, still perfectly composed, still smiling that angelic, deadly smile. Her eyes glinted with calculation. She wasn’t done... not even close. She had played her cards perfectly tonight, but this was only the start. “She won’t see this coming,” Clara whispered low and dangerous to a figure standing just out of the dim streetlight. The shadow nodded silently, listening. I didn’t know it yet, but forces far bigger than I could imagine were already in motion. I stood up from the alley steps, brushing the dirt from my torn dress, tucking my bag closer to my side. I didn’t look back. I couldn’t. Every step I took away from the auditorium, away from my old life, was a step toward something bigger, something stronger. I walked into the night through empty streets, past sleeping houses and flickering streetlights, and I made my vow again... louder this time, stronger. “I’ll be back.” The city was dark and silent around me. The hum of distant traffic and the occasional bark of a dog were the only sounds. The air was cold, stinging my cheeks, but it woke me up. Every step carried determination. Every breath I took was a reminder that I would survive. I would return. And I would make everyone who had humiliated me pay…
