The Scientist's Return
Jessica stood on the grand stage, the bright lights reflecting off her glasses as the audience roared in applause. She was a renowned scientist, known across Korea for her brilliant mind and groundbreaking projects. Today was another success, another victory, yet her thoughts seemed miles away.
"Thank you all for your support," Jessica began, her voice calm and composed. "It’s been an incredible journey." The crowd’s cheers grew louder, but Jessica’s smile faltered for a moment. Her mind wandered, back to a time she couldn’t escape, no matter how successful she became.
As the event concluded, Jessica’s team gathered around her, excitedly discussing their upcoming summer vacation. "Are you okay, Jessica?" one of her team members asked, noticing her distant expression.
Jessica snapped back to the present. "Yeah, I’m fine," she replied with a forced smile, but her thoughts were still elsewhere.
"Why did they leave me?" she often wondered, the question gnawing at her heart even after all these years.
But Jessica's fate had shifted when she was rescued by a group of scientists. Among them was Dr. Kim, a brilliant but humble man who dedicated himself to her recovery. Under his care, Jessica underwent years of treatment. Dr. Kim had not only saved her life but had nurtured her mind, seeing in her a potential that few others could.
Dr. Kim had passed away not long ago, but his guidance and mentorship had been pivotal. He had encouraged Jessica to pursue science, believing that her intellect could change the world. With his support, Jessica dove into her studies, rising to prominence in the scientific community.
"You’ve come a long way, Jessica," Dr. Kim had once told her during her final stages of recovery, his voice filled with pride.
As Jessica sat in her office, staring out the window, her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. Her team entered, concern etched on their faces.
"You need a break, Jessica," one of her team members urged gently. You’ve been working non-stop for months. A vacation will do you good.
Jessica hesitated, but before she could protest, they continued. We’ve already arranged everything. Jacob will assist you while you’re away.
Jacob, her trusted assistant, smiled reassuringly. "Don’t worry, I’ve got everything under control."
Reluctantly, Jessica agreed. A trip back to her hometown might be just what she needed to clear her mind and escape the growing weight of her past.
As Jessica and Jacob left the lab, the sunlight hit them, warm but not overbearing. "Thanks for coming with me, Jacob," she said, her voice filled with a mix of gratitude and lingering unease.
"No problem, Jessica," Jacob replied. "You deserve this time off."
They walked in silence for a moment, the air between them filled with unspoken thoughts. But before they could reach their destination, an old man appeared out of nowhere. His clothes were worn, and his eyes shone with an intensity that made Jessica stop in her tracks.
"Honey, don’t you remember me?" the old man said, his voice trembling with emotion.
Jessica froze, her heart pounding in her chest. She stared at the man, her mind racing. His face was unfamiliar, yet something about him stirred a distant memory. Before she could respond, security rushed in, quickly assessing the situation.
"Come with us, sir," one of the guards said firmly, taking the old man by the arm and gently leading him away. The man struggled slightly but did not resist, his eyes never leaving Jessica’s.
Jacob, watching the unsettling scene unfold, murmured under his breath, barely audible. "What’s he doing here?"
His words hung in the air, adding another layer to the enigma. Jessica glanced at him.
