THE SHIFT; CLAIMING

Something changed after that. Not just in me. In him. The training didn’t stop. But it changed. Subtly. Dangerously. Kael didn’t just test my strength anymore. He tested my reactions. My control. My awareness. And every time— He got closer. Too close. Too often. Until it became impossible to ignore. “Again,” he said. I moved. Faster now. Stronger. The spark from before returned. That strange energy. That surge. It flickered through my veins as I struck— And this time— Kael’s eyes flashed. He stepped back. Actually stepped back. I froze. “You felt that,” I whispered. His gaze sharpened. “Yes.” My heart raced. “What is it?” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead— He stepped closer again. Slow. Deliberate. Predatory. And this time— I didn’t step back. I should have. But I didn’t. The bond pulled. My body responded. And I let it. Just a little. Kael noticed. His eyes darkened again. “Interesting,” he murmured. My breath hitched. “What?” “You’re not resisting anymore.” I swallowed. “I am.” He tilted his head. “No.” And the worst part? He was right. I couldn’t stop thinking about him. Not the King. Not the monster. But him. The way he looked at me. The way he touched me. The way his voice changed… just slightly… when I reacted. I turned on the cot, frustrated. “This is wrong,” I muttered. My wolf stirred. Not in agreement. In curiosity. And that scared me. I closed my eyes. And instantly— I felt it. The bond. Not distant. Not quiet but present. Aware. Connected to him. You’re thinking about me. The voice slid into my mind without warning. My eyes flew open. “I’m not—” You are. My breath hitched. Heat crept into my chest again. “This isn’t fair,” I whispered. A low sound echoed. Not quite a laugh. But close. Nothing about this is fair. My chest tightened. And for the first time— I didn’t argue. The next time I saw him— Everything changed. He didn’t wait. Didn’t observe. Didn’t test. The moment I stepped into the room— He was already moving. Toward me. Fast. Decisive. Dominant. My breath caught. The bond reacted instantly. Stronger than ever. He stopped right in front of me. Close. Too close. “Look at me,” he said. I did. I couldn’t not. His eyes burned into mine. Intense. Focused. Different. “You’re changing,” he said. My heart pounded. “I don’t know what you mean.” He stepped closer. Closing the last bit of space. “You do.” My breath faltered. “No—” His hand lifted. And this time— When he touched me— It wasn’t testing. It wasn’t light. It wasn’t hesitant. It was deliberate. His hand settled against my neck. Firm. Claiming. The bond exploded. Heat. Connection. Awareness. Everything hit at once. I gasped, my hands instinctively gripping his arms. And for a moment— Just a moment— Neither of us moved. “You feel it,” he said quietly. Not a question. A statement. My breath shook. “Yes.” The word slipped out before I could stop it. His eyes darkened. And something shifted. Deep. Irreversible. “Good,” he murmured. His thumb brushed slightly against my skin. And this time— I didn’t pull away. I shouldn’t have stayed still. The moment his hand touched my neck— I should have pulled away. I should have resisted. I should have reminded myself who he was. What he was. But I didn’t. And that was the problem. His touch wasn’t soft. It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t meant to comfort. But it wasn’t cruel either. It was… deliberate. Claiming. And my body responded before my mind could catch up. A sharp breath escaped me as heat rushed through my veins, the bond reacting instantly—stronger than it ever had before. My fingers tightened slightly against his arms. I didn’t even realize I was holding onto him until that moment. Kael stilled. His eyes dropped briefly— To my hands. Then slowly— Back to my face. The air shifted. Dangerously. “You didn’t pull away,” he said. My heart slammed. “I…” My voice faltered. “I didn’t mean to—” The bond tightened. Not painfully. But firmly. Correcting. His thumb brushed lightly against my neck. And this time— I leaned into it. Just slightly. Barely noticeable. But he felt it. Of course he did. Kael’s expression changed. Not drastically. But enough. Enough for me to see it. Enough for me to feel it. Something in him— Shifted. “Careful,” he murmured. My breath hitched. “You’re starting to respond… without the bond forcing you.” My stomach dropped. “No,” I whispered quickly. “That’s not—” He stepped closer. Closing what little distance remained between us. “Don’t lie to me.” The words weren’t harsh. But they weren’t gentle either. They were… certain. And that scared me more than anything else. I couldn’t think straight anymore. Not when he was this close. Not when the bond felt like it was tightening around my entire being. Not when my own body was starting to betray me. “Again,” he said. But this time— I didn’t move. “I can’t,” I whispered. Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. “Explain.” My chest tightened. “I don’t understand what’s happening,” I admitted, my voice trembling. “Every time you touch me, every time you come close—it’s like I can’t think. I can’t—” The bond pulsed. Sharp. Not punishment. But reaction. Kael’s gaze darkened. “Good.” My head snapped up. “What?” “You’re aware of it now.” My stomach twisted. “That’s not a good thing!” “It is,” he said calmly. My frustration spiked. “No, it’s not! I feel like I’m losing control!” His eyes locked onto mine. Sharp. Focused. “You are.” My breath caught. “And that’s necessary.”
