- I'm going to miss you a lot, said Alice to me. Alice was my best friend. She was also the only friend I had at that time. She had come to say goodbye to me. Alice and I were sitting by the moving truck waiting for the big move. I was already very emotional for my age. I had tried to hold back my tears as much as possible but it was impossible to hold back. I then started crying in his arms. - You too will miss me a lot, I had answered. - Promise me you'll never forget me! - I promise you, my friend! After talking to her for a long time. The time to leave us had finally arrived. - One day, I will come to visit you when I have the opportunity; since I have family who live there, she told me. - All right. I'll be waiting for you no matter when you come then..., I had replied. - Goodbye Cassandra... Those were her last words before she walked home crying. - Goodbye, I said softly. During the trip, I was surprised and sad at the same time. What surprised me was the beauty of the landscape. Whereas, what was saddening me was not being able to see Alice as much as I wanted to now. I was also afraid of not having a friend in this new city. - Everything will be fine, my big sister told me. Unlike me, my big sister Cassie, she was very happy to finally be able to move. The air of the big city was suffocating her, especially the schools because my sister was smart and super advanced for her age. She wanted to go to other schools to test her abilities. - Little sister... Regard this town as a new opportunity. I'm sure you'll make lots of friends. - I hope so, I replied with a sigh. I was staring out the car window thinking of all the good times I had with my best friend... Then, it was thinking of her that I had fallen asleep all along the journey... But what I didn't know was that my coming to Pennsylvania was going to change the course of my life and Alice's forever. In my old school. I was despised because of my skin color; because I was a person of color. In other words, I was considered a "black person"; since I had brown skin color. Even though racism had been fought and the endless fight for equality had begun. That didn't stop people from continuing to treat us differently though. As you must have guessed, I was the only black girl in this school. Yet, even though Alice and I were different because of this fact, she had always been kind to me. She had been the only one who was always there for me. She was there to help me, to support me, and also to consider me as a full member of her family. A few hours later... When we finally arrived at our destination, Cassie decided to wake me up. - Girls, my father told us, welcome to Pennsylvania! Moving is never easy for anyone. It takes time, changes, new adaptation, new habits, but also meeting new people. My sister and I were speechless in front of our new house. The house where we were going to live including the neighborhood of the city where we were located was magnificent as if it were a neighborhood specially reserved for rich people! Our house was large and spacious just like the other tower houses. It was very different from our little house in Washington. Our new house was painted white and the roofs were brown. This house, which looked so simple, was quite an eye-opener. Nobody could imagine that she could have six rooms seen from the outside. Apart from the six bedrooms, it also had a large kitchen. Upstairs there were: two bathrooms and a toilet down the hall. Outside, there was a small railing near the front door. There were little wooden fences not even a meter long that protected the lawn in front of the step to enter. Finally, there was a small garden which was located behind the house. - Are you sure you didn't go to the wrong house, dad?, I had asked my father. Everyone then started laughing at my words. - It's our new house my darling, he replied embarrassingly. - How much did it cost you?, asked my sister. - Not much, I got it for a bargain, he replied proudly. - Only haunted houses are worth walking!, I said. - Do you want to shame me or what?, said my father with a joking look. After having a good laugh. The movers began their work by unloading our belongings from the truck. - "Now", I thought, "we are going to have a new life here".
