On our wedding day, Evan Foster went up the mountain himself to pick the flowers for my bridal bouquet, only to vanish without a trace. I was nearly frantic. Just as I was about to head up the mountain to look for him, a video arrived on my phone.
It showed a wedding in progress. The bride was Natalie Bennett, my half-sister in name only. Her white wedding gown skimmed the slight curve of her stomach, and the man beside her, his arm linked with hers, was my fiancé, Evan.
Someone quietly asked him, "Evan, you left Mia at her own wedding just to hide the truth about who fathered Natalie's baby. Aren't you afraid she'll raise hell if she finds out? You two have already registered your marriage."
"She won't find out," he said lightly. "I'll go back tomorrow and tell her I fell down the mountainside. She's softhearted. A little coaxing and she'll let it go. Besides, the marriage certificate she has is fake. Mia has everything she could ever want, but Natalie has spent her whole life branded an illegitimate daughter. I can't bear to let her child go through the same thing. Mia will just have to be the one who loses out this time."
His voice came lightly through the phone, but every word cut me to the bone.
I calmly stopped the video without crying or making a scene.
By the time Evan finally realized something was wrong and came looking for me, I had already married someone else.
