Chapter 1 – The Dare
(The bus door hissed open, spilling out a single passenger into the cool night. Mist curled along the cracked pavement like lazy fingers, wrapping around Belle Klaus’s boots. She pulled her leather jacket tighter.) Marcie (on phone, speaker crackling) “So? You’re officially in creepy-ville?” Belle [smirking] “Silver Hollow is not creepy… it’s just… atmospheric.” Marcie: “Uh-huh. Atmospheric is code for ‘this place looks like the set of every horror movie ever.’” Belle glanced down Main Street, all dim shop windows, a flickering neon Diner sign, and an old clock tower looming above the rooftops. Somewhere in the distance, an owl called. Belle: “It’s charming, actually. Rustic. Quiet. No traffic. No nosy neighbors.” Marcie: “No life.” Belle: “That’s the point, remember? New start. No drama.” Marcie:[snorting] “Yeah, right. You? No drama? I'll give it a week before you’re in trouble.” Belle adjusted her duffel bag strap. “Not happening. I’m done with” Marcie: “Speaking of trouble…” Belle: “Oh, here we go.” Marcie: “So. The rumor? About the guy in the woods?” Belle stopped mid-step. “What guy?” Marcie: “Tall. Hot. Broody. Shows up at the edge of the forest every couple of weeks, then vanishes. Locals call him the ‘Shadow of Silver Hollow.’” Belle’s brow arched. “Sounds like some drunk hunter.” Marcie: “Nope. According to the internet ” Belle: “You mean your conspiracy blog.” Marcie: “he’s either a recluse, a ghost, or… wait for it… a werewolf.” Belle laughed, the sound bouncing off the silent street. “You’ve been watching too many full moon specials.” Marcie: “I’m serious. People say his eyes glow. Like” Belle: “Stop. If you’re about to say ‘like a predator’” Marcie: “like amber fire.” Belle shook her head, smiling. “You are ridiculous.” Marcie: “So here’s my dare…” Belle groaned. “No.” Marcie: “You haven’t even heard it yet.” Belle: “I don’t have to. You’re about to say something that ends with me being chased through the woods by Bigfoot’s sexier cousin.” Marcie: “Exactly! Seduce him.” Belle nearly dropped her bag. “Excuse me?” Marcie: “You heard me. Make him fall for you. Or at least get him to talk. Think of it, mysterious loner + hot stranger + you. It’s like fate is begging you to cause trouble.” Belle pressed her lips together, pretending to consider. “Why would I do that?” Marcie: “Because you can’t resist a mystery. And because you’re Belle Klaus, the girl who once flirted with a guy just to steal his motorcycle for a dare.” Belle smirked at the memory. “That was one time.” Marcie: “So? Are you in?” Belle glanced toward the dark silhouette of the forest beyond the street. Mist pooled at its edge like a warning. “What’s the prize if I win?” Marcie: “Bragging rights for life.” Belle: “That’s it?” Marcie: “Fine. Bragging rights and I’ll owe you one outrageous favor. Anything.” Belle grinned slowly. “Anything?” Marcie: “Anything.” Belle exhaled, the mist turning her breath to silver. “Deal.” The air thickened as she approached the small bed and breakfast she’d booked. Lights glowed faintly inside, but her eyes kept sliding to the tree line across the road. Belle (muttering to herself) “Seduce a mystery man. How hard could it be?” Her phone buzzed. A text from Marcie: Step one find him. Step two looks irresistible. Belle rolled her eyes but typed back: Step three survive. Later that night, unable to sleep, Belle slipped on a hoodie and walked outside. The town was dead silent. Only the wind moved, carrying the faint scent of pine and something darker… warmer. She crossed the road toward the forest. Moonlight licked the edge of the trees, painting silver on rough bark. Belle (whispering) “Hello? Shadow man?” A branch snapped somewhere inside the woods. Belle froze, heart thudding. Belle: “If that’s you, I just want to talk. Or… you know… buy you a drink.” Silence. She stepped closer. The mist swirled between the trees, parting just enough to reveal a sliver of darkness movement. Another step. Her sneakers crunched on leaves. Belle: “You’re not making this easy…” And then she saw them. Two eyes. Burning from the shadows like molten gold, unblinking, locked on her. Belle’s breath caught. The night seemed to lean in around her, listening. The eyes didn’t move. Didn’t blink. But she felt them… not just watching, but studying her. A shiver ran up her spine. Belle (barely audible) “Oh… hell.” The glow flared, just slightly, as if in answer. Somewhere deep in the woods, a low, rumbling growl curled into the mist. To be continued…
