The Silver Collar
The moon was high, but Clara felt no warmth from it. She knelt on the cold stone floor of the Pack Hall, her neck bare and trembling. The silver collar they'd forced her to wear since childhood glinted under the chandeliers, a constant reminder that she was an Omega, worthless, and owned. Her knees ached against the marble. Her hands were bound behind her back with rough rope that bit into her wrists. Around her, the entire pack had gathered. Wolves in their human forms, dressed in finery, whispered and pointed. Some sneered. Others looked away, unable to meet her eyes. Tonight was supposed to be her eighteenth birthday. Tonight, the Moon Goddess would bless her with her fated mate. She had dreamed of this moment for years. Every Omega dreamed of it the one night when the Goddess would look down and give them a mate who would see their worth, who would lift them from the shadows and give them a place in the pack. She just never expected her mate to be Alpha Killian Blackwood. He stood on the dais, seven feet of sculpted muscle and cold indifference. His jet-black hair was swept back, his jaw sharp as a blade. His eyes, the color of storm clouds, scanned the crowd with bored arrogance. His wolf, Shadow, pulsed beneath his skin, demanding everyone submit. Clara's heart soared for one hopeful second. Killian. My mate. She had loved him from afar for years. Every Omega girl in the pack did. He was powerful, ruthless, and devastatingly handsome. The perfect Alpha. Then he looked at her and sneered. "The Moon Goddess has a cruel sense of humor," Killian announced to the entire pack, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "To pair a King with a collar-wearing nobody." The crowd laughed. Clara felt her face burn with shame. He stepped down from the dais, his expensive boots clicking against the marble. Each step was slow, deliberate, like a predator toying with its prey. He stopped in front of her and grabbed her chin roughly, tilting her face to the light. His touch burned, but not with passion. With disgust. He studied her like she was a bug beneath his shoe. Her tangled brown hair. Her too-thin frame. The silver collar that marked her as the lowest of the low. "You're pathetic," he said softly, but everyone heard. "Weak. Useless. A stain on my pack." Clara's eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall. She had learned long ago that crying only made things worse. "I, Alpha Killian Blackwood," he announced, releasing her chin and stepping back, "reject you, Clara Wright, as my mate and my Luna." The bond inside her chest snapped. White-hot agony lanced through her spine. It was like a knife carving out her heart, her soul, her very essence. She screamed a raw, guttural sound that no wolf should ever have to make. Her wolf, a tiny, malnourished creature that had barely survived the Omega years, whimpered and retreated deep inside her, wounded and broken. Clara collapsed to the floor, gasping for air. Blood dripped from her nose. Her vision blurred. Around her, the pack laughed. "Look at her," someone said. "Pathetic." "She should be grateful he didn't kill her." "Omegas don't deserve mates." Killian looked down at her with cold disinterest. "Get her out of my sight," he ordered. "And take that pathetic collar off. She's not even worth the silver." Two guards grabbed her by the arms and dragged her through the Pack Hall. Her feet scraped against the marble. Her dress, a tattered grey thing that barely covered her, rode up her thighs. She didn't care. She couldn't feel anything but the hollow emptiness where her mate bond used to be. They threw her out the back gates. Her cheek hit the gravel, and blood filled her mouth. The guards tossed a single, tattered bag after her with her only belongings. A few pieces of clothing. A worn-out blanket. And her mother's necklace, hidden at the bottom. "If you survive the rogue lands," one guard spat, "don't come back." The heavy iron gates slammed shut behind her. Clara lay in the mud for hours. The rain started falling sometime around midnight, soaking her already ruined dress. She shivered violently, her body weak from the rejection. Every nerve ending screamed with pain. The bond was still healing, but the wound it left behind was deep. Omegas were the lowest in the pack hierarchy. Born without strong wolves, without power, without status. They were tolerated at best, abused at worst. Clara had survived eighteen years by keeping her head down, never speaking back, never drawing attention. And it didn't matter. In the end, she had been discarded like garbage. Where do I go from here? The rogue lands stretched before her miles of untamed forest filled with wolves who had no pack, no rules, no mercy. An Omega alone wouldn't last a week. She couldn't hunt. She couldn't fight. She could barely walk. Clara closed her eyes and let the rain wash over her. Maybe it's easier to just give up. The thought scared her. She had always been a survivor. Even when the pack children threw rocks at her. Even when the adults looked through her like she didn't exist. She had always kept going. But now... What was the point? She felt the darkness creeping in, pulling her under. Her body was shutting down. The rejection had drained her of everything she had. Then she felt it. A pulse. Hot. Golden. Royal. It started in her chest, right where the mate bond had been ripped apart. A warmth that spread through her veins like liquid fire. Her heart beat faster, stronger. The cold rain on her skin suddenly felt soothing, not punishing. Clara opened her eyes. Her hands were glowing. A soft silver light emanated from her palms, pulsing in time with her heartbeat. She stared at them, unable to comprehend what she was seeing. What is this? The necklace. Her mother's necklace. She scrambled to her knees, ignoring the pain, and dug through the tattered bag. Her fingers found the cool metal, a silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Her mother had given it to her before she died, when Clara was only five. "Keep this with you always, my little star," her mother had whispered. "It will protect you when the time comes." Clara had never understood what that meant. She had worn the necklace for years until the pack elders took it away, claiming Omegas weren't allowed to own jewelry. She had hidden it in her bag, hoping to retrieve it one day. Now, the pendant was glowing. She touched it, and a vision struck her. A great obsidian castle rose from the mountains, its towers piercing the storm clouds. Inside, a golden throne sat empty. And on the throne no, beside it a warrior King with eyes like molten amber, sitting alone in the darkness. He was massive. Powerful. His black hair fell across his forehead, and his jaw was set with determination. He wore a crown of black iron, and his hands rested on the armrests of his throne as if he were holding himself back from something. Mate, a voice whispered in her mind. Your true mate. Clara gasped. Another vision. This time, the King shot upright in his war chamber. His hand clutched his chest, and his amber eyes widened in shock. His Lycan roared to life for the first time in a century. Mate, it snarled. Find her. Protect her. Kill anyone who touched her. Clara felt the connection snap into place. A new bond. Stronger. Brighter. Royal. She wasn't an Omega. She was a Lycan. The last surviving Lycan princess. The rain stopped. Clara stood up slowly, her body healing itself with every breath. Her wounds sealed. Her muscles grew stronger. Her brown eyes flickered to pure silver, the mark of royal Lycan blood. She looked down at her reflection in a puddle. Her brown hair was still tangled, her face still thin and pale, but her eyes... They were different. Ancient. Powerful. The eyes of a predator. "Princess," she whispered, testing the word on her tongue. It felt right. She clenched her fists, and silver light danced between her fingers. She had never felt power before. Never felt strong. Never felt worthy. Now, she felt like she could tear the world apart. The forest before her was dark and dangerous, but Clara wasn't afraid anymore. She was the predator now. The Lycan King was waiting for her, and she would find him. She would claim him as her own. And Killian... Clara smiled, a cold, ruthless smile that didn't belong on the face of the broken Omega she had been. She would make him pay. She would make him regret rejecting her. She would tear his pack apart piece by piece and watch him beg for mercy. "I'm coming, my King," she whispered into the storm. "And Killian... I hope you're ready to beg." Her wolf stirred inside her, no longer a weak, malnourished creature, but a magnificent silver beast with glowing eyes and razor-sharp claws. Let's go, her wolf growled. Let's go claim what's ours. Clara grabbed her tattered bag and started walking into the forest. Behind her, the iron gates of the Blackwood Pack grew smaller and smaller, disappearing into the darkness. She never looked back.
