Anna stood with a pathetic, ashen face as her mate married another woman. A woman he said is his true love.
Blood trickled from her lips as she clutched her chest with one hand. She felt strangled. She felt like a thousand wasps were feeding on her heart.
From a hairline crack, she can almost see the fissure in her heart getting wider as the ceremony advanced to its culmination.
When her mate finally sealed the bond with his true love, she can almost hear her heart shatter into a million pieces. She knew then, she will never be the same.
BLAARGH!
Anna held her stomach as blood gush out from her mouth in a sudden and forceful stream. With her tears clouding her vision, all she can see is her world crumbling down before her eyes.
Breathing is so hard, so painful. She never thought she can taste a devastating despair at a young age of fifteen.
She told him at the age of ten he was her mate. He teased her then. Not believing in her "nonsense" as he called it.
When she told him again at thirteen, he scoffed her off. Having found his true love.
When she told him again two months ago, he almost ripped her head off. He commanded her to get lost and stay far away from him. If he sees her loony self again or even a shadow of her, he will ruthlessly bite her throat off and watch her bleed herself to death.
It was like she was hit by a ton of bricks. Her heart stopped beating ---hurt by her mate's cruel, harsh words. Then she was scared. Very scared.
Her mate's eyes were like a ferocious beast gleaming with a viciousness she will never forget. She was badly shaken as she scrambled her way out, shaking like a leaf. She ran as fast as she could, stumbling over her own feet a couple of times --as if the very devil is hot on her heels.
She thought having found her mate, she would finally have a family. That having a mate means someone will finally, finally, protect her from the monsters of her past.
But she realized the hard way, mates are just fairytales. Mates were lies.
It defeats true love.
Anna wiped the blood on her lips with the back of her hand. As she looked up, she saw her mate looking straight at her from afar.
Their eyes met in midair. His eyes darkening with a demonic, ruthless light --as if warning her not to destroy his perfect mating ceremony or she will lose her life.
Her vision is getting blurry. But she instinctively knows, that's what his eyes meant. She is his true mate after all. Why wouldn't she know his thoughts, his every heartbeat?
She gave him a bitter, quivering smile.
Her eyes frantically roamed her mate's body one last time. Memorizing each beautiful lines and hard features. He looked especially dashing today. He really spared no expense just to marry his true love.
With shoulders stooped in defeat, she turned her back as she swayed and staggered away from her hiding place ---looking like a lonely, hunched back, old woman.
Her fantasy has been cruelly torn apart by reality.
The least thing she could do is fulfill her mate's happy ever after, even if it means losing the only mate she ever wished for.
