The Weight of the World
Elena sat on the worn velvet of her couch, the silence of the house broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the clock. Suddenly, a sharp cry erupted from the kitchen. "Elena!" She sprinted toward the sound, her heart hammering against her ribs. In the kitchen, she found her mother slumped against the counter, clutching a deep gash on her arm. Crimson stained the floor. Without a word, Elena grabbed a clean towel to pressure the wound and rushed her to the hospital. After a tense hour in the waiting room, the doctor emerged. "It’s a deep cut, Elena, but we’ve stitched it up. However," he lowered his voice, "these accidents happen because her heart is weakening. She’s dizzy, she’s losing coordination. She needs real treatment." Elena’s heart sank. Back home, she tucked her mother into bed. "Mom, no more kitchen work. None. I’ll handle everything." Her mother’s eyes filled with tears. "But Elena, you work so hard already. You’re a lawyer... you shouldn't be scrubbing floors and cooking every meal. You can't handle it all alone." "I can manage, Mom," Elena lied, forcing a smile. The reality was grimmer. Elena was a lawyer with a conscience in a city that didn't value one. She refused to defend the guilty, which meant her office was perpetually empty. To keep the lights on, she spent her afternoons working at a local restaurant. "Elena, you’re miles away again," Leo, the restaurant manager, said gently as she wiped down a table. "Talk to me. What’s wrong?" Elena finally broke. She told him about her mother’s failing heart and the "band-aid" treatments that weren't enough. Leo, a true friend, didn't hesitate. "I can help. I’ve saved some money—it’s not a fortune, but I can give you $500,000 to start the specialized care." Elena wept with gratitude. For a moment, the world felt a little less heavy. Later that day, Elena stepped out to buy a quick lunch. Lost in thought, she collided with a solid chest. "Watch where you’re going, you peasant!" a cold, arrogant voice snapped. Elena looked up into the piercing eyes of a man who radiated power and cruelty. This was Lucas, the CEO of a tech empire and, unknown to the world, a leader of the city's most feared underground syndicate. "I am so sorry, sir," Elena said, though his tone made her blood boil. Lucas looked down at his polished Italian leather shoes. "Sorry? These shoes cost more than your life. You’re worthless. Look at you—disgusting. Kneel down and lick the scuff off." Elena’s apology evaporated. She stood tall, her eyes flashing. "I don’t care who you are. You could be the President or a King, but you have the manners of a stray dog. It’s not your parents' fault you turned out this way—you’re just a mistake of nature." The air turned frigid. Lucas’s bodyguards moved forward, but Lucas raised a hand, a dark, intrigued smile spreading across his face. No one had ever spoken to him like that. "I don't think you'll last thirty minutes in my life, so I won't bother learning your name," Elena hissed, walking away. Lucas watched her go, his eyes narrowing. "Beautiful, fierce, and utterly broke. Find out everything about her," he whispered to his men. "She’s going to be mine."
