Chapter 2 I FORCED MYSELF DOWN the hallway, but it felt like walking through mud. The closer I came to my grandmother’s ward, the louder the gruesome groaning became. Whoever or whatever was making that noise must have been in the room right next to hers. A distinct sense of dread came over me as I approached. Was I imagining things, or was that hideous sound emanating from my grandmother’s room? They must have moved another patient in with her while I was downstairs. Poor Gran, getting housed with someone making that kind of noise. It couldn’t be easy for her. I can’t overstate the trepidation that overtook me as I stood, motionless, outside that room. I couldn’t see my grandmother’s bed, only the two on the opposite side of the ward. Both remained empty. That was so strange.
