My elderly neighbor Cathy held her phone up to me, as the newest footage played of my husband—Seb and my other neighbor—Mrs Shire f*****g on her counter top.
Cathy and Mrs Shire were next neighbors.
I lived four houses away on the opposite side of the street.
———
The first time Cathy caught my husband f*****g Mrs Shire, she’d been on her daily morning run when she heard moaning.
Being the nosy almost seventy five year old she was, she’d decided to follow the sound thinking it was some rowdy teenagers doing adult activities.
To her surprise it was two married people going at it like wild dogs—in her own words—between the bushes.
I’d been devastated.
It was the also the first time I learned of Seb’s unfaithfulness.
I’d just had another miscarriage the day before, and there he was f*****g some suburbian slut?
I’d been mad at Cathy.
Called her a home wrecker, an evil witch from a Disney movie, a liar, a sadistic aged creep.
I’d been in denial.
Two days later, she came back bearing a gift. One that would break me.
This time, when she found my husband and Mrs Shire f*****g, she’d recording them and brought it to me. The footage was unclear but that sure as hell was Mrs Shire.
The man could have been anyone.
Evidence, she’d said.
Mrs Shire was on all fours, slightly elevated, her hands on a log, fully clothed except her boobs that where hanging out of her sports bra, and her pants pulled down to her thighs, such that her ass and wet glistening v****a lips were out.
The man was f*****g her in the ass.
Mrs Shire’s eyes were rolled back and so were the man’s.
They were lost in pleasure.
I’d swatted the phone away, tears streaming down my face and asked the sadistic Cathy.
“Why are you doing this to me? Why are you recording these filthy videos to show me. You know I just lost my baby not less than five days ago. Are you some kind of pervert that wants to jerk off to this? Do you get off watching grieving women drown deeper in their misery?”
She’d tilted her head to the side and cautiously said, “Emily I didn’t intend to hurt you. And I’m sorry about your miscarriage. But I’ve been in your shoes. A suburbian stay at home wife whose husband did whatever he wanted while I just turned a blind eye because it was better to have the life than nothing at all. To be married to someone rich than be independent.”
I’d folded my hands irritated and asked, “Oh really? Were you having miscarriage after miscarriage too?”
“Two. You know what, if you want, you can come and we can talk about it. Whenever you’re ready.”
The next day, was still the same as every other day.
I always woke up before Seb, made his pre workout coffee, he’d then go for a jog as I made his breakfast, prepared whatever attire he was going to wear that day, and all the snacks he would need. I always made sure that he was set for his day at work, like the good wife I was.
Even after the miscarriages and while going through them, I never skipped a day of this routine.
On this day, I’d followed Seb on his morning jog at a distance.
As he passed Mrs Shire’s house, he waved at her and her husband—a good neighborly wave—then he’d continued running.
I hid between the alley of her and Cathy’s house as I watched her usher her three kids in her husband’s car who was dropping them at school, and then give him a passionate goodbye kiss on his lips, like the loving faithful wive she was pretending to be.
Someone cleared their throat behind me.
I turned to find Cathy warming up for her jog, she nodded at me.
I turned back to find Mrs Shire in her jogging attire looking around as if scouting for something, as her husband’s car speed away. She’d then seen Cathy who had started jogging, and waved at her.
After Cathy had made a turn, Mrs Shire seeing nobody on the street, took the turn my husband had made.
She kept looking around to make sure she wasn’t followed or any witnesses were around.
She was being careful.
But so was I.
As she jogged on the street, I jogged in the backyards, keeping her in sight.
She made a turn to the forested areas and I lost her.
For a second I’d felt helpless.
But I kept walking. Kept exploring.
And then I had rhythmic thumping.
That’s when I saw her against a tree f*****g my husband.
