Chapter 3: Secrets Beneath the City

Morning arrived, but the city no longer felt alive, news helicopters circled endlessly overhead, police blocked off streets, every television station repeated the same question.
Who sent the message?
No one had an answer.
Kai barely slept after leaving the observatory. The glowing crystal lay hidden inside his backpack, wrapped in an old hoodie. Even through the thick fabric, it pulsed with a faint blue light every few seconds.
It was as if it had a heartbeat.
At exactly 8:00 a.m., Kai's smartwatch buzzed.
A single message appeared.
DO NOT TRUST THE SURFACE.
"What does that even mean?" Kai muttered, before he could think about it, his phone rang,
Maya
"I've found something," she said without saying hello.
"What?"
"The observatory wasn't built on solid ground." Kai frowned,
"what are you talking about?"
"I searched old city maps all night. The building sits directly above a section of tunnels that were never listed in public records."
Kai's pulse quickened.
"Tunnels?"
"Not ordinary ones."
She lowered her voice.
"They're over a hundred years older than the city."
An hour later, Kai met Maya outside the city's public library, she carried a laptop, several printed maps, and a flashlight.
"I hacked into the city's historical archive," she admitted with a grin.
Kai laughed nervously.
"You hacked the government before breakfast?"
"I couldn't sleep."
She unfolded one of the maps across a nearby bench, most of the city looked normal. Roads, buildings, parks, but beneath them was another map.
A hidden network.
Circular chambers connected by narrow passageways stretched beneath the streets like veins beneath skin.
Kai stared.
"No one knows about these?"
"They've been erased from every modern record."
Maya pointed to a large circle beneath the center of the city.
"This symbol matches the markings inside the observatory."
Kai recognized it immediately, the glowing symbol carved into the alien chamber, before he could speak, the crystal inside his backpack began vibrating, softly, then harder.
People walking nearby didn't seem to notice, only Kai and Maya could hear the low humming sound.
"It wants us to go there," Maya whispered.
Kai nodded, together they followed the map toward the oldest district in the city, the streets grew quieter, buildings became older, soon they reached an abandoned subway station sealed decades ago, a rusted gate blocked the entrance.
A faded warning sign read:
DANGER – CLOSED PERMANENTLY
Kai pushed against the gate, it wouldn't move, then his smartwatch lit up, blue symbols spread across the screen, the gate unlocked with a loud metallic click.
Kai and Maya exchanged nervous glances.
"That's... impossible," Maya whispered, they stepped inside.
Dust floated through beams of light breaking in from cracks above, broken train tracks disappeared into darkness.
Everything smelled of rust and damp stone, they walked for several minutes before noticing something strange.
The walls were changing, old concrete slowly gave way to smooth silver metal, tiny blue lines glowed beneath the surface.
The deeper they went, the newer everything looked.
As if someone had built a futuristic world underneath an ancient one.
Suddenly the tunnel opened into an enormous underground chamber,
Kai stopped breathing.
It was bigger than a football stadium, towering pillars reached into darkness above, thousands of glowing blue crystals floated in the air.
In the center stood a massive circular machine unlike anything on Earth, it's rings slowly rotated without making a sound.
Maya stared in amazement.
"This technology..."
"It can't be human," Kai finished.
The crystal inside his backpack suddenly flew into the air, it floated toward the machine.
"No!" Kai shouted, he reached for it.
Too late, the crystal locked itself into a space at the center of the machine.
The entire chamber awakened, blue light raced across the floor, the floating crystals brightened, ancient symbols appeared on every wall.
A deep voice echoed throughout the chamber.
POWER CORE RESTORED.
The ground trembled, somewhere far above, car alarms began blaring across the city, the rotating rings spun faster, a hologram burst into existence above the machine.
It showed Earth, then the Moon, then dozens of enormous ships hidden behind the Moon's far side.
Kai's heart nearly stopped.
"They've been there all along..."
Before Maya could answer, another message appeared inside the hologram, unlike the first, this one wasn't welcoming.
The glowing letters flashed bright red.
WARNING:
UNAUTHORIZED HUMAN ACTIVATION DETECTED.
The lights throughout the chamber suddenly changed from blue...
...to crimson.
A loud mechanical sound echoed from the darkness.
THUD.
THUD.
THUD.
Something enormous was waking up, heavy footsteps shook the floor, Kai slowly turned toward the far end of the chamber, two brilliant blue eyes opened in the darkness, then a towering metallic figure stepped into the light.
It stood nearly twelve feet tall, its armor shimmered like liquid silver, ancient symbols glowed across its chest.
For a long moment, it simply stared at Kai, then it spoke in a calm, emotionless voice.
"Identity confirmed."
It took one more step forward.
"Welcome back... Commander."
Kai's blood ran cold.
"I think..." he whispered.
"...it's talking to me."
The giant machine raised one glowing hand, around them, the chamber doors slammed shut.
There was no way out.
