KAI: The Signal

CHAPTER 2 : HIDDEN OBSERVATORY

The countdown on Kai's smartwatch continued to tick.

01:58:43

He couldn't stop staring at it.

"Maya," he said into the phone, "we have less than two hours."

"I know," she replied. "Meet me at the old bus station in fifteen minutes."

Kai glanced at his bedroom door, his parents were asleep, if he left now, they wouldn't even know he was gone, he grabbed a flashlight, a hoodie, his backpack, and quietly slipped out the front door.

The streets were nothing like they had been a few hours earlier, people stood outside their homes, staring at their phones. Police cars raced past with flashing lights, news helicopters circled overhead.

Every giant billboard in the city was blank, as if someone had erased the world for a moment, Kai reached the bus station just as Maya arrived on her bicycle.

"You actually came," she said.

"You thought I'd stay home after that?"

She held up her wrist, her broken smartwatch displayed the same map, the same countdown, the same blinking destination. Kai looked at her in disbelief.

"So whatever chose me..."

"It chose me too," Maya finished.

Without another word, they began walking toward the abandoned observatory on the hill outside the city.

No one had used the place for years the road leading to it was cracked and covered with weeds, rusted warning signs leaned against broken fences.

As they climbed the hill, the air grew strangely quiet, no birds, no insects,not even the wind.

"It's too quiet," Maya whispered. Kai nodded, then...

His watch vibrated, the glowing dot stopped moving, destination Reached.

Ahead of them stood the observatory.

Its white dome was cracked, and vines climbed its walls, the front doors hung open as though someone had just walked inside.

"You ready?" Kai asked, Maya took a deep breath, "no," "me neither." Together, they stepped inside, dust covered everything, old computers sat on broken desks.

Stacks of books had fallen onto the floor.

Moonlight streamed through shattered windows, suddenly— Click.

A faint blue light appeared deep inside the building, Kai and Maya looked at each other.

"Did you do that?" Maya whispered.

Kai shook his head.

Slowly, they followed the light down a narrow hallway.

At the end was a heavy metal door unlike anything else in the observatory, it had no handle, no lock. Only a glowing circle in its center.

Kai's smartwatch beeped.

A message appeared.

ACCESS GRANTED

Before he could react, the watch lifted slightly from his wrist, shining a beam of blue light onto the circle.

The door rumbled, dust fell from the ceiling.

Then, with a deep metallic groan, it slid open, colld air rushed out.

Beyond the doorway was a room that couldn't possibly exist beneath an abandoned observatory.

Its walls were made of smooth silver metal covered in glowing symbols, a giant sphere floated silently in the center of the room.

It wasn't hanging from the ceiling, it wasn't touching the floor, itsimply floated.

"How..." Maya whispered,

"this place has been abandoned for decades."Kai stepped closer, as soon as he came within a few feet of the sphere, it lit up.

Thousands of tiny lights raced across its surface, a soft voice echoed through the chamber.

Identity confirmed.

Kai froze, "did that thing just... recognize me?"

The sphere unfolded like a flower.

Inside was a crystal no bigger than his hand, It glowed with a silver-blue light, without thinking, Kai reached toward it.

"Wait!" Maya shouted, but it was too late, the moment his fingers touched the crystal, the room disappeared.

Kai found himself standing in the middle of space, stars surrounded him, Galaxies spun silently in the distance.

Then a single voice spoke—not through his ears, but inside his mind. Welcome back, Kai Carter, his heart pounded.

"Back?"

The voice continued, your journey has begun.

Suddenly, the stars rearranged themselves into a map, one world after another lit up, then they all pointed toward Earth.

Kai gasped, before he could ask another question, everything went black, he opened his eyes, he was lying on the observatory floor.

Maya knelt beside him.

"Kai! Can you hear me?"

He nodded weakly.

"What happened?" she asked.

Kai looked at the glowing crystal still resting in his hand.

"I... don't think we're the first people to find this."

Far above the observatory, hidden behind the clouds, a silver object silently changed course, it was heading straight for them.
