Chapter 1: Shadows and Seduction
Aria's POV
They say danger has a scent, but standing inside Killian Thorne’s private office, all I could smell was expensive bourbon, rain, and cold, unadulterated power.
My fingers were still trembling around the flash drive I had just ripped from his main terminal when the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind me.
I had spent six months planning this infiltration. Six months memorizing every alias, every background detail, and every protocol. I was supposed to be a ghost. I was supposed to extract the syndicate's financial ledgers and vanish into the night before anyone even blinked.
Instead, I was locked in a private penthouse with the most ruthless syndicate boss in the underworld—and he wasn't planning on letting me walk out quietly.
"You're standing too close to the confidential ledgers, sweetheart," Killian murmured, his voice a low, gravelly purr that sent a shiver straight down my spine.
I forced my jaw to relax, turning to face him with a cool, unbothered smirk that took every ounce of my training to maintain.
"I was just looking for a glass of water, Mr. Thorne," Aria replied, holding my ground despite the wild, erratic hammer of my pulse.
Killian closed the distance between us with terrifying speed, caging me against the edge of the desk before I could even blink. His fingers brushed lightly against my jawline, burning hot and impossible to ignore.
"Careful, agent," Killian whispered against my ear, his breath hot and dangerous against my skin. "Playing with fire in my house usually gets you burned to ash. So tell me... what are you really searching for?"
The silence that followed stretched like a taut wire between us. I forced myself to look directly into his pitch-black eyes, refusing to let him see the sheer panic threatening to unravel my composure.
"I told you, just looking for water," Aria repeated, my voice dropping into a steadier register. "Though I have to admit, your security leaves a lot to be desired."
A dark, humorless chuckle vibrated deep within Killian's chest. His hand shifted from my jaw, his thumb tracing the sensitive slope of my collarbone right above where my hidden federal earpiece was tucked away.
"My security is flawless, sweetheart," Killian murmured, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that felt entirely predatory. "The only flaw in this room is you... thinking you could walk into my den and leave with my secrets."
"Try me," Aria challenged, a reckless wave of adrenaline overriding my better judgment.
Before Killian could answer, the sharp, shrill static of a incoming signal buzzed against my skin. My heart skipped a beat. If my backup tried to hail me right now, everything would be over in seconds.
Killian's eyes flicked downward toward my chest at the faint sound of the audio feedback, a lethal grin spreading slowly across his face.
"Looks like your people are getting impatient, agent," Killian whispered, his thumb pressing harder against my pulse point. "Too bad they'll never reach you in time."
