Chapter 1: Leap of Faith
The moonlight streamed through the forest, and traveled along the fresh snowfall. It's beautiful. Freezing - but beautiful. I watch as the glow cascades across the forest floor, turning the fresh ice and slush into thousands of tiny crystals. The small glimmers through the branches dance across my face. You would think being out in the wilderness would be a disadvantage, especially lacking the ability to shift like the others. This just fuels me. Nothing comes close to the hell I've endured these past few months. I was nothing, a burden. Least I let them think they had that kind of control. Climb up the tree to your left. Now.  You have yet to prove me wrong.  I know. Thankfully you’re finally starting to listen.  Thea, you and I both know we’ve been running for miles. I don’t sense anything, I don’t smell anything and I’ve made sure to cover our tracks these last few miles.  I would never lead you into harm. You know that you and I are the only ones who would look after each other. Stay quiet. You’ll see.  Thomas did...He did Thea.  He tried to Celeste. He was blinded, but he was one of the very few I had trusted. But enough of that, you have to move. NOW! I grab my bag and jump to catch the lowest branch. I swung my body weight, pulled and pushed until I could balance my weight on it. The rest were fairly close, so it was as simple as climbing a ladder or staircase. After going up about halfway, I found a gap in the trees, out overlooking the scenery. I looked to the moon, feeling my eyes shift. Then I heard it. It started as the pheromones - for a normal wolf, you can sense the type of encounter by what pheromones are being released. In this case, it's not good. Their pheromones can either be inviting and friendly, or envelope you in fear or agitation. Thea has helped teach me how to turn any fear into adrenaline.  Not yet. Just wait it out. We have the advantage.   The sound of crushed snow and snapping twigs approached. As they got closer, I felt the urge to run.  Inhale, and exhale slowly. Any small movement will cause us to be discovered.  Three large wolves passed by my burrow. Thankfully I know how to mask scent or I could be dead by now. I could hear the huffs and low growls between them. As an outside member now, I couldn’t make out their full conversations. Just piece together body language. Except for one. In the middle. He smelled of home. Anger began to flood my veins  and he glanced up. I'm sure he could see the silver in my eyes. I jumped from the branch letting the power flow through me as I soared below. It was time. He tore my life away, so I'll start by tearing his life from his body.
