Chapter 1: The Forbidden Bloodline
The wind howled through the trees, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth as Selene Rivers crouched low in the corner of the small, dimly lit cabin. Her heart raced, the rhythmic thumping in her chest matching the anxious tapping of rain against the wooden walls. Her elderly guardian, Maeve, sat hunched in the chair by the fire, her frail hands shaking as she stirred the pot of stew that simmered on the stove. Selene watched her closely, eyes scanning the room for any signs of danger, even though she knew Maeve would warn her in time. Her life had always been one of secrecy, hidden away in the remote woods, moving from place to place, never staying long enough to make a connection. Maeve had taught her how to stay quiet, how to keep her presence undetected. They had been alone for as long as Selene could remember, ever since Maeve found her as a small child, abandoned on the outskirts of the nearest village. They never spoke of the past, not directly, but Maeve’s warnings had been clear: “There are things about you, Selene, things you can’t ever let anyone see.” But tonight, something felt different. Tonight, there was an urgency in the air, a tension that settled in her bones, making every nerve in her body hum with a warning she couldn’t ignore. Maeve’s voice, weak but steady, broke through the silence. “Selene, come sit with me, child.” Reluctantly, Selene left her post by the window and crossed the room, her bare feet brushing against the cold wooden floor. Maeve’s hands trembled as she motioned for her to sit beside her, her eyes dim with age but still sharp with wisdom. “Sit, child. It’s time I tell you everything,” Maeve’s voice cracked, as if it took all of her remaining strength to utter the words. “I’ve kept it from you long enough, but you deserve to know the truth.” Selene furrowed her brow. “What truth, Maeve?” She hesitated, her heart fluttering in anticipation, but the old woman’s expression grew grave, and her eyes darted to the door as if she feared someone was listening. “Your bloodline, Selene,” Maeve whispered, leaning closer. “It’s not just any bloodline. You’re… you’re a breeder.” Selene froze, her breath catching in her throat. She knew the term, of course, but never imagined it could apply to her. Breeders were rare, sought after by alpha packs because of their ability to produce powerful heirs, heirs who would carry on the legacy of the pack. They were prized, often treated like little more than vessels, their worth defined only by their fertility and the strength of the children they could bear. The thought of being one of them sent a cold shiver through her spine, and yet something inside her responded, as though this revelation unlocked a piece of her past she’d never fully understood. “I don’t understand,” Selene whispered, her voice trembling. “What do you mean, Maeve? What does this mean for me?” Maeve’s eyes darkened, and for the first time, Selene saw a flicker of something darker beneath the woman’s usual calm demeanor to fear. Fear for her. Fear for what Selene was. “You were born with the blood of the ancients, Selene. A rare bloodline, one that carries the ability to birth alphas, powerful alphas. But it’s a curse as much as it’s a blessing. There are those who would stop at nothing to claim you.” Selene felt a knot form in her stomach, her mind racing with questions she couldn’t quite articulate. “But why haven’t you told me this before? Why keep me hidden?” Maeve’s eyes softened as she gazed at the girl she had raised as her own. “Because I wanted to protect you. I couldn’t bear the thought of what they might do to you if they knew what you were. The packs, they hunt breeders. They’ll stop at nothing to possess you.” Selene took a shaky breath, trying to absorb the weight of Maeve’s words. “But… you said you’re not my real mother. Who is?” Maeve’s expression faltered for a moment, and Selene could see that this question was one Maeve had long avoided. “You don’t have a mother, not the way most people do. But you were born to a woman who was one of the most powerful alphas in the pack. The same pack that still hunts you. Your bloodline is forbidden, Selene. It’s what makes you a target.” A chill ran through her veins as the enormity of the revelation settled on her chest like a heavy weight. She had always known she was different. The way her senses had always been sharper, how she could feel the pull of the moon like no one else, but she had never known why. Now, the pieces of her life started to align in a terrifying pattern. “I’ve done everything I could to protect you,” Maeve continued, her voice barely a whisper. “But they will find you eventually, Selene. They always do.” Before Selene could respond, the unmistakable sound of snapping branches echoed from outside, followed by the unmistakable rustle of leaves in the wind. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Someone or something was out there. Maeve’s expression shifted instantly from one of sorrow to one of steely resolve. “They’ve found us. It’s time to leave.” The panic in Maeve’s voice jolted Selene from her stupor, and she leapt to her feet. “What do you mean? Who?” “Alpha wolves,” Maeve said sharply. “You must go now, Selene. Leave. Before they get too close.” Before Selene could ask any more questions, Maeve shoved a small, worn satchel into her hands. “Take this. It’ll protect you for a time. The herbs inside can mask your scent, slow their tracking. But you must go. They’ll kill you if they catch you.” Selene’s pulse quickened, her eyes darting around the room as if she could somehow stop the encroaching danger. “But… where will I go?” Maeve’s face softened, and for a fleeting moment, Selene saw the older woman she had come to love and trust, her protector, the one person who had been there for her. “To Bloodfang territory,” Maeve said, her voice heavy with finality. “There, you might find shelter, but do not trust them. They will want to claim you. But you must be strong. You must never let them control you.” With that, Maeve’s frail hand clasped Selene’s, her grip surprisingly strong. “I will not be here to protect you anymore, but you will survive. You’re stronger than you think.” Selene’s throat tightened as she held Maeve’s gaze. “No, I won’t leave you.” Maeve smiled faintly, her eyes brimming with both sadness and pride. “You have no choice, child. Go now. You don’t have much time.” Reluctantly, Selene nodded, her heart heavy with grief. She rushed to the door, her mind in a whirlwind. She didn’t understand everything, but one thing was certain that her life would never be the same again. The forbidden bloodline Maeve had hidden from her all these years was now a curse she could never outrun. She stepped into the dark night, the storm raging around her, and for the first time in her life, the scent of her own blood was the only thing that mattered. And it would soon be the very thing that betrayed her. Selene didn't know what to expect when she stepped into the unknown, but as the distant howls of wolves echoed through the storm, she could feel them coming. She could feel her past closing in on her, and there was no escaping the life that had been thrust upon her.
