Chapter 8: Aptitude test room

1333 Words
The clamoring mages gathering left and right, a view of a commonplace where they were talking loudly amidst each other was what greet Arion the moment he entered the Guildhall together with Lilith, his new companion that he literally picked up from out of the streets. From the fixed bench seating, bistro tables, chair made out of wooden oak, and another chart supposedly for quests posts near the reception desk that are being handled by beautiful ladies of different races. Unlike the evil people he met outside, the fellows who are inside the Guildhall were armed and ready. They have a set of eye-catching, gaudy equipment ranging from bows to sword, and some flaunt their way of clothing, but the others focus on the sturdiness and the actual benefit of wearing equipment like the guy from the left that's ironclad in silver armor. Naturally, Arion's attention and eyesight were fixated at the curvaceous and elegant elf ladies, beast women that had cat ears, and a variety of attracting female mages who look pretty skilled in their field. In fact, he's not interested in their sexiness or anything, rather he'd like to have at least a portion of their DNA so he can perform several kinds of experiments and see their mutations from up close. Aside from technology and inventing things as he does, he's undoubtedly thrilled about science as well. Now Arion almost forgot that another elf was beside him just sufficient for the data he needed, deciding he'll just gonna grill her later after he has done what he should do, which is to register himself as a mage. He still had time to understand the nature and concepts of the new world, he strutted towards the reception desk together with Lilith who's really bashful and shy amidst the crowd. While he's walking, he ascertained at least three or four trajectory-line of vision from distinct personalities glanced at his direction and he stopped when he felt everyone was looking at him. A subtle eerie permeated the air as the clamoring noises from the mages earlier was replaced by the silence of simplicity, he knew this from the beginning. "Hm... Lilith, why are they looking at you like you are a criminal?" That's why Arion noticed when he was pulling her towards the Guildhall, she resisted by trying to run away but she's also aware she cannot defy his choice. Looking at her intently, Lilith was trembling and shivering like she's going to faint at any moment. Her eyes were closed while she's holding her own arms in fright. It's not just simple bashfulness or ignoring the masses, it must have a connection concerning her past. Just when there's a random dude that was wearing golden armor, sword and shield emerged from the crowd is the time when Arion fully discerned something serious is going on. This guy who certainly had a strong animosity towards him blatantly said. "Hey. What are you doing bringing her here?" "What? I never knew who you are, do you have a problem with it?" Arion applied intimidation by glaring at him back. He noticed the gold emblem attached to his right pouldron. "It appears you are new here. Based on your set-up, are you an alchemist perhaps? We can recommend you to other teams, you need to stay away from her." He just straight insulted the girl he bought minutes ago. And as he's the owner, he couldn't accept such an offensive remark. "This is so dumb... I feel like I'm in an old RPG game..." Arion muttered while shrugging. "What?" The same guy thinks he's very strange. "I'm saying I don't care, so if you don't mind, I'll now register as a mage," Arion stated and the silent crowd earlier became literally dead-silent. They've focused their attention solely upon him this time, becoming the limelight of the people. Distrust, unknown, suspicion, and wariness filled the very mood as Arion has reached the reception desk. It's as if they were readying for what move he shall make. Even the ladies who shall assist her behind the desk were pushing each other whoever had to aid his needs, and of course, the modest the girl which has a pair of wings and long claws of nails was the one who initiated the conversation with him, he presumed her race to be harpy or called mountain birds. For Arion, they kind of looked like they were fooling around during their work but didn't pay much attention to it. He's thinking he should ask an inhabitant of this world, which is Lilith, though finishing this task first is of importance right now. "Hey lady." Arion placed his palms above the desk in a thud. "I want to be a mage, register me fast. I don't like wasting time." He sounded a little bit rude, lest he'd intimidate her. "I-Is that so? Then follow me." She wearily passed through the wooden bar separating the client's side and the office assistants, ushering Arion in a nearby room just next to the left corner. The mages paved a way for them like they were some kind of stars. Before Arion could enter the room, Lilith tugged his sweater and wearily said with her lowered tone. "If you are forced doing this... you can just abandon me, I shall understand much better." At first, both of them were looking at each other's eyes like they are actors of a historical drama, and little did she knew Arion was trying to grasp what she just said. Maybe he's unmistakably the smartest man alive as a great inventor of the modern age, but in the end, he's just a simple teenager who's bad at communication towards girls. "Hm... I don't understand. I'm not being forced, I am asking you to be with me, got that?" He answered her honestly. Reverence once again stroked Lilith's heart as Arion's blue eyes gleam the hope she once lost, his black hair was hanging loosely in an eccentric style. At that moment, she forgot about her past and everyone's gazes turned into a shimmering radiance encompassing her feeling as her cold hands were held by him, escorting her inside the room where the receptionist guided them. "I'm sorry..." Lilith apologized silently, albeit he heard her very well. The room they entered is basically downright, utterly empty. There aren't single paintings on the wall, vase, furniture, or alike in contrast to the lobby. But what aroused Arion's interest was two things that were exactly in the middle of the chamber. "This is the aptitude test room." She stated. "Hey lady," He called her. "Y-Yes?" She stuttered. "Before we start, what's your name?" Arion asked her name for formality. "M-My name is Sarra." She introduced herself. Now his pride has taken the better of him, he whirled like an i***t while covering half of his face, which means he's about to make a declaration. "I'm Arion Aldrehrt. Remember the name who shall understand this world more than anyone!" "O-Okay...?" Sarra got uncomfortable, even Lilith was wondering why he was posing like a maniac. It's just his way of saying things. In reality, he's extremely exhilarated by what's going to follow. "But first, mind explaining to me this whole mage thingy and what the Guildhall does? And please tell me the current status of this kingdom. In other words, tell me everything." He made an astounding declaration yet he's asking shamefully, though it's an effective way of saving up a bunch of time rather than doing theories. It's how his previous world has advanced through the exchange of information. Ready to clinch up his first quest of becoming a mage, first he needed to understand what are 'mages' in the first place and what they do. Arion just does happen found a great source of information, it was none other than the harpy lady receptionist. Understand, rebuilt, adapt, that's the way of the science, a way that paves a path towards becoming an inventor in this great era of magic. Entirely ignorant, his hope that stored up shall vanish once he realized what's missing inside his body. A talent that cannot be bestowed by his glorious creations, explicated from the upcoming aptitude test.
