Chapter 23: Learning new things

1160 Words
The first thing Arion did after returning to Adriel's home was to go back to her room and grabbed the books on her shelves. He's been inching since he came here whether what kind of information he can read with it. Good for him, Adriel took care of turning in the quest in the Guildhall accompanied by Sarrah, and she was fretting by the fact the two will be left behind. Now, Arion's alone with Lilith whom he tagged along so they can read some books together. "What kind of ancient text is this?!" He was horrified when he skimmed the first book he ever touched in the world where he was reincarnated. "Oh, it's a book about plants." Lilith also glimpses at what he was reading. "This is so complicated!" He exclaimed while scratching his scalp. Starting from the title page that should be the first sheet down to its content, this is the first time he had seen complicated text as if they were a mixture of Arabic, Chinese, and some ancient alphabet he couldn't explain in few words. For him, it's more like a kind of cursed set of phrases packed in single reading material. At the same time, he was wondering why he can understand what his companions and other people were saying back when he first arrived at the kingdom. It was too much even for a genius such as himself, although Arion knew it was just a communication barrier dilemma and thinks he should study their language and way of writing, or else he won't be able to read even a single piece of quest parchment. "Lilith, teach me how to read! I'm a fast learner throughout the way." Arion held her hands pleading for assistance. "I-If you say so..." She agreed not because she was bounded by the slave contract and rather he couldn't say 'no' when he just used his cute-eyes-puppy card. The good part is she never questioned him why he couldn't read nor why it was the case. Instead, Lilith borrowed some of the language tomes on the lowest platform of the shelves, especially for grammatical context. Each word, knowledge, and wisdom she's teaching him were being processed within his brain interconnecting his previous intellectual property while not being hampered to the fact he just reincarnated in a magical world. The letters they use within this world had striking disparity when it comes to how it is written on a piece of paper. But as Arion trains writing himself with the help of plume and parchment, he further learns they had this wide compatibility. And the compatibility he was thinking is that the world where he transmigrated and the universe of the earth might have the same type of altered reality. Which basically means they are the same, but not the same simultaneously. Though he didn't dive much deeper into his conclusions and focused trying to read and write some new language he just discovered. It lasted for at least 30 minutes and Adriel just returned from turning in the quest, accepting the meager 30 silver coins as a reward. The first thing she did was rush towards where they left the two of them, of course, in her own room. "What were you two doing?!" She banged the door explicitly, her face was bright red. Everything she knew about him came crumbling in a single one fell swoop. What welcome her was that in her own bed, Arion was on top of Lilith who's unconscious; a tad of tears was rolling on her cheeks while she's drolling lots of saliva. At that moment, no one could ever mistake what Arion did and the things he just did to her earlier ago flashed right before her very eyes. "You..." Adriel took the deepest breath. "You're truly a degenerate! What have you done to her while I'm gone?!" She retorted and flickered her fingers, revealing her magical staff brimming with mana and irritation. The one who doesn't know what just happened came back to his senses. He looked at the surroundings and found himself actually on top of Lilith, and after seconds of processing the current situation he's currently in; he got off the bed and stood straight without any remorse or whatsoever. "Okay. Promise, I did nothing and I can explain this very well." Arion acted calmly. But deep inside, his bones were shivering in fear because of the misunderstanding. "Explain right here and now!" She exclaimed angrily. Her white hair was levitating around her head as if her influential aura was exuding so much mana to the point her ire presents a negative bodily reaction. Although Arion's amazed of a dryad's physical inclinations, he should much more focus on clearing the confusion. "So this is what happened." And so he began telling what just happened minutes before Adriel banged the door in a surprise. Apparently, he practically learned the entire alphabet of the new world he was reincarnated into including runes and glyphs proving the English letters back in the earth were truly exactly the same and the way of reading the cluster of words into sentences might have a disparity when it was pronounced, although he figured everything within the span of two hours. Filled with excitement, Arion jumped onto the table without thinking first. "Alright! That was easy! Time to go back to the initial object–" It was the moment he slipped his feet on the edge and fell onto Lilith who's soundly sleeping on the bed. "That's what happened believe me or not." He defended. "I can understand if you came from a foreign place, but you said Lilith taught you so how come she's asleep?" Adriel doubted. "She got sleepy halfway so I told her to take a nap and she did. Why don't you asked her then?" He stayed firm no matter what. "Hey, is that true? Did this p*****t touched you or what?!" Out of the blue, Adriel was going to shake her until she wakes up but she halted when she suddenly heard her sleep talk. "No... I'm sorry I couldn't get enough golds... please forgive me..." Lilith was having a nightmare from a distant past. The two who were bickering stayed silent, "Well... forget it. I believe you." Adriel turned over in defeat. The fact that Lilith's soundly sleeping while having a nightmare means she's truly in her slumber. "I know I'm bitter against her... but please give that little elf the attention she needed," Adriel urged him this time. She closed the door, picked a book on the shelf, and began reading on her own in the right corner of the sofa. "Well... I will." Arion nodded, his conviction was true. "Think about the quest for tomorrow, just rest for the remainder of the day." She told. It seems Lilith's not just physically broken, but she's mentally scarred too. Arion thought his invention would never have any meaning if they can't help his companions, so right at that point, he exactly knows what he had to do before anything else. "The machine with purpose is merely a tool, but an invention that has meaning is a friend too."
