CHAPTER 6.

1439 Words
It hasn't been easy being a single mother and at the same time shouldering the responsibility of my family but tough times never last, tough people do. Although I have some medical debts I still have to pay off from my dad's illness, I still know we will survive. My babies are four years old now and they are smarter than their ages, they started reciting numbers and alphabets at age 2 and I was very proud of them. Andre has some of Sam's attributes like his possessiveness and anger but he has my mom to answer to when he goes overboard while Andria is exactly like me, mom would say if I can survive in the world then there is a space for her also. My two brothers have been a blessing to my kids and I because they help out with them ever since mom was diagnosed with Arthritis, Felix is an engineering student in the University of Los Angeles in his final year while Brian is a law student also in the University of Los Angeles in his third year. Felix is hoping to work in Xavier's limited, they are the biggest and richest automobile manufacturing company. Their workers are said to be from major Ivy league universities like Oxford, Stanford, Yale and co but my brother always said wishes come true and when he's ready to start his IT, he knows his CV and result would speak on his behalf, he's very intelligent. While Brian wishes to be a part of the Knights Group legal team, I know my siblings are big dreamers but who said dreams don't come true. I know they are doing more than expected, working hard day and night to make their dreams a reality, so I stopped them from working while schooling after dad's death. They wanted to help me out with the finances but I told them I got it. I make 1600$ from Lighthill's Restaurant and 1900$ from Sweet Tooth Bakery including all my taxes weekly, I pay my bills and save for tuition then save the rest for a rainy day. I have 2200$ saved already. Hopefully, I can make it up to something tangible worth upgrading our rent to a three bedroom. My babies and I currently share the room with my mom and they are growing out of their baby cribs. They need a sized mattress while I share the bed with mom, they also need more space in the house to grow and explore their hobbies. Andre loves soccer but we don't have enough space for him to kick the ball around while Andre loves painting, so they both can't seem to function in a small space at the same time. I woke up by 6 am to get them prepared for school, after bathing them both I noticed Andria is quiet which is unlike her, she’s quiet normally but she utters more words at home and she's quiet this morning. “Baby, did you sleep well?” I asked her sweetly while I helped her with her dress. She shakes her head in response, I looked at Andre hoping he can respond to me because they tell each other everything. He looked at her with a sad smile as if he was telling her he would tell and she shakes her head in response. “Dria, if you don't tell mommy how will I make it better?” I told her quietly while I help put her hair into a free ponytail the way she loves it. “She was bullied again yesterday by Charlie in school.” Dre said not looking at her. Dria looked at him at if she had betrayed him but I could see the hint of tears that will be escaping soon if I didn't do something. I pulled her into myself tutting silently as she breaks down into sobs, I felt myself break inside as I held my sobbing child. “I'm so sorry my darling,” I said to her sweetly placing kisses on her hair while I used my hand to comfort her. “I don't want to go back Momma.” She whispered brokenly. “But, you have Dre to always protect you and I know you are my brave baby. You will be better, it's just going to take time, my love,” I told her carefully. “Why don't we have a daddy?” I heard Dre ask from beside me. “Honey, you have a daddy. He's just busy right now making money for us,” I lied horribly, I know Dre catches me easily but Dria is the best to fool. “Really, when would he be back?” Dria asked looking up to me with her eyes full of hope. I couldn't look at her dead in the eyes to keep my lies, I looked at Dre who dared me to continue so I did the reasonable thing a mother would do. I walked away from them towards the door, “Soon” I responded before opening the door and made my way to the kitchen. “You looked like you've just told a lie.” Brian said chuckling while he flipped the pancakes he's making. “They asked the question again and I had to give the regular response, Dre is getting smarter and it's frustrating.” I replied to him taking out the orange juice and milk from the fridge while he serves the pancakes and omelette into Dre and Dria’s plates as I served their drinks. “It's normal for him to be smarter. Sis, hope you haven't forgotten about the 50% of my tuition fee balance?” He said looking at me hopefully. “Yes that's true, how much is it?” I asked standing at the entrance of the kitchen “Breakfast is ready.” I called out. Sounds of footsteps were the responds I got as I stepped back into the kitchen to continue my conversation with Brian. “It's 15000$ and Felix told me to remind you about his payment of 5000$ also.” He continued not taking his eyes off me. “That's 20 grands,” I said swallowing dryly. I have just 10 grands saved for tuitions and I haven't paid the twins school fees also. “How soon do we have to pay?” I questioned him hoping I will have more time. “This week Sis” He said placing the filled up plates and cups in front of the twins, who are seated with the help of their mom on the kitchen bar stool. “Oh, alright then. You will be staying home with mom today right?” I replied. He responds with a nod of his head, mom's arthritis has been worst for a while so we take turn in staying with her at home just incase she needs anything and the fact that I can't afford a stay at home nurse at the moment. By past 7 we all were through with our breakfast, the twins got their bags, I picked my car keys and we made our way to my parked car but not before saying goodbye to my mom in her room. I dropped the twins in school but I was stopped by Mrs Michelle before I could leave. “I'm sorry to disturb you Miss Summers, how are you?” She greeted me standing in front of me by the entrance of the school. “It's fine Mrs Michaels, how are you?” I responded with a knowing smile. “You know why I'm here, I've sent emails and notes but I haven't received anything from you. I know it's not easy doing what you do but I also have staff to pay for their jobs.” She explained calmly “I'm very sorry Mrs Michaels, I will send the tuition fee this week. Thank you for your patience.” I pleaded. “This week Sophia, have a lovely day.” Mrs Michaels concluded with a pat on my back before she went back into the school building. Mrs Michaels is my mom's friend so she knew about my family's ordeal and she's been very patient with me ever since the twins enrolled into her school. I entered my car and drove off to my first shift of the day, the Sweet Tooth Bakery where I was greeted by my boss and co-workers before I entered the kitchen to work my magic. I made some pies, loads of cookie varieties, cupcakes, muffins, a few birthday cakes and some specials for the day.
