CHAPTER FOUR

1026 Words
She was seated in the cafeteria. It was her lunch break and her second week of classes. She was alone at her table because Brandon had a doctor’s appointment which stopped him from coming to school. Everybody else had a friend with them at their table, except her but she was used to it now. She brought out a bottle of water from her bag and set it beside the juice box she had purchased, then took a bite out of her sandwich when suddenly, all the noise in the cafeteria came to an abrupt stop. She looked down to her shirt thinking that perhaps mayo had squirted on it but there was no such thing. Then, she spied movement with the corner of her eye. She looked to her left and froze. So that was the reason for the quiet cafeteria. There he was. The boy that made her loses all her marbles whenever she set eyes on him. The boy that made her heart skips in more ways than one. She tried to open her mouth to speak but all the spittle in it had dried up. She reached out for her bottle of water the same time he did and their hands brushed. She blushed pink from the root of her hair to the tips of her toes and drew her hand back. “Here” He said, stretching the bottle towards her. She collected it shyly and chugged down almost half of it before wiping her mouth with her hand. “I’m Jaden, nice to meet you” “I know your name. Everyone does, really” she blurted out before she could control it. She slapped a hand over her mouth which made him laugh. “You’re cute, but you’re right, I am popular. Where’s your friend today?” Jaden asked, looking around. He didn’t even notice that Alexa’s jaw had dropped open of its own accord. She was surprised that Jaden not only knew her friend but also called her cute. She refused to think too deeply about what that meant because she already liked him too much when he was yet to show any interest in her. She asked him how he knew that she had a friend that she was usually with and when he said that he had been watching her, Alexa’s smile almost split her face into half. She was on cloud 9 that the boy she had such a massive crush on was also interested in her. He began to ask her questions about herself, which she answered shyly and also asked him some other questions. They were in the middle of getting to know each other despite all the whispers around them when she turned around to bring something from her bag that was flung on her seat to show Jaden. Her eyes trailed to the table in the middle of the cafeteria where the ‘cool kids’, Jaden included all sat. Her eyes met with Emily who snarled at her, showing off her canines. Alexa shuddered, shaken by that weird encounter. She tried to get back into conversation with Jaden but it was proving difficult. Jaden noticed that she had become a bit withdrawn. He wondered if he had said something wrong but before he could ask her anything, his eyes glazed over. Immediately, he got on his feet and started gathering his things while expressing to Alexa that he would see her later because he had an emergency to attend to. He gestured to his friends who were sitting at the table to move with him. Alexa was so taken by Jaden that she had not realized they were not the only ones there. She blushed at the realization and her blush got even worse when Jaden bent down and dropped a kiss on her cheek before he strode out of the cafeteria, his friends in tow. Alexa, quick to escape the glares and sniggers from people, gathered her things and half eaten lunch quickly and bolted out of the cafeteria. Before she left however, she cast her gaze towards the table where Emily was sat and didn’t see her or her friends. She breathed out a sigh of relief that they hadn’t seen Jaden kiss her on the cheek and walked out. Her joy was soon short lived. No sooner had she turned the corner that all her books and every other thing in her hands went flying in the air. She landed heavily on the floor, her chin taking most of the impact as she was not expecting the jolt. She let out moans because of pain but managed to get herself into a sitting position and then raised her head up. She met the angry eyes of Emily Baker and her best friend, Rachel. She whimpered when Emily squatted down to her level and clutched her shirt in her hand. Emily went ahead to warn her to stay away from Jaden because he belonged to her and her alone. Alexa tried to defend herself that Jaden told her that they had broken up. Emily, in anger shoved Alexa away from her, stood up and wagged her finger at her. "Jaden can never be yours. You're not worth him." She said and began to call Alexa so many abusive names and referred to how much of a loser she was. She even went as far as saying that Alexa deserved to die because she was the reason why her parents were dead. These all made tears well up in Alexa’s eyes. Then, she proceeded to warning her to stay away from Jaden because they were just going through a break. They were not actually broken up. And even if they were, Alexa was not the type of girl Jaden went for. After Rachel kicked her stuff around, they both sized her up and walked away, leaving her on the ground in tears and laughing maniacally as they went. Alexa stayed there for a while, just letting the tears cascade down her cheeks before she got up and started picking up her things strewn along the hallway, wincing with ever step.
