Chapter Three

1855 Words
Lori’s POV “Sit here, let me get you a drink,” Olivia said as she dashed off into the crowd leaving me sitting alone. ‘Could it be that she has actually changed and is now interested in me?’ I wondered as I could not understand her need to want to be seen with me and now to even fetch me a drink. Never has she ever fetched me a drink, not even a glass of water when I was sick, it has always been me fetching her water, drinks and everything else. ‘Well, I might as well enjoy the moment before she reverses to herself,’ I thought. “This is yours,” She said handing me a glass of wine as she took a seat beside me. “Thank You,” I said, taking the wine glass from her. “I was going to ask you to join me but you dashed off before I could say anything,” She said. “Hmm,” I said, remembering that her boyfriend was already accusing me of having delayed her arrival at his party before I had dashed off. “Yes, were you pressed?” She asked. I could remember I had said I wanted to takena call, so, I wondered why she was asking the obvious. ‘Maybe she just wants something to talk about,’ I thought. “No, I had a call,” “Was it important?” She asked further “No, not really,” I said. “Who was it from?” “Are you fine?” I asked. “Yes, why are you asking?” “You don’t seem yourself,” I said. “I’m fine, just want to know what my baby sister is up to,” She said. “All of this is weird and you are creeping me out,” I said really concerned. “I am sorry, I will slow down my pace,” She said with a faint smile. “It was from Beck Cosmo,” I said, feeling guilty that she was trying to make an effort but I was ruining it for her. “Oh, that’s nice.” She said smiling. “I hope things work out for you both,” She said, taking me by surprise again. Olivia was not the kind of person who wished me well on anything, least of all a relationship with someone she would rather have for herself as he was wealthier than Jack was. “Thanks, and I hope things work out well between you and Jack,” I said. “Thank you. Let’s cheer to that,” She said raising her glass. We clicked our glasses together and I took a sip from the glass content. “How’s work going?” She asked. “Fine, learning and becoming better,” I answered. “That’s good, having any issues?” She asked. “No,” I said, taking another sip from my glass. “Make sure to let me know if you are having any issues at work, I will tell Jack to work on it,” She said. “Thanks, but I don’t think that would be necessary,” I said. “Why?” She asked. “I don’t want people thinking I’m getting a better treatment because you are dating Jack,” I said beginning to dose off. “That won’t happen,” She said. “Well, I would rather avoid it,” I said as the drink seemed to have taken a better part of me. I was feeling tipsy. I tried picking up my phone from the table but my hand felt too weak to pick up the phone, all my attempts felt useless. “Are you okay?” Olivia asked. “I think I am a bit tipsy. Maybe because I haven’t had wine this strong in a while,” I said, although the wine hadn’t tasted strong when I sipped it. “What do you want from your phone?” She asked me. “I want to call Beck to come pick me up,” I said, trying again to lay hold of my phone. “Let me help you,” She said, picking up my phone while asking me to give her the password. I ordinarily would not have given her the password to my phone because I didn’t trust her but I needed help so I told her the password. Moreover, I was beginning to feel like I would pass out and make a scene at the party. “Maybe, I should go to the bathroom and wash my face,” I said but when I tried standing up, it was difficult. I could barely see and couldn’t even tell if Olivia was calling Beck. “Have you called Beck?” I asked her. “His number isn’t going through,” She said. “That’s new. Give me the phone, let me try calling him again,” I said. “Why not instead rest your head,” She suggested. “Where?” I asked pointing at the table which I could now see in three shades, unsure which was real. “Let me take you upstairs, to one of the guest rooms,” She said walking around to assist me in getting on my feet. Hanging unto her, she walked me to the said room. I could barely see the ground as we walked and wasn’t certain which room we were heading to or what the room looked like when we were inside. She opened the door and walked me into the room. “You can lie down on this bed,” She said. “Are you sure Jack will be okay with this?” I asked, not wanting any trouble. “This is just one of his guest rooms, He wouldn’t even know you are here,” She said. “Oh, that’s fine then. Thank You,” I said, lying down on the bed. “My phone please,” I asked. “You need to lie down, will drop your phone over there so you can rest well without interruptions,” She said, though I couldn’t see where there was. “I will go get you water, just lay your head and sleep,” She added. “Okay, thank you so much,” I said and heard the door close. I couldn’t believe she was being so nice and helpful to make sure I was fine. My head began to spin around, so I closed my eyes and fell into sleep. *** “Lori, Oh my God,” I heard a voice that sounded like Beck’s saying. I struggled to open my eyes and was shocked to see Beck at the door watching me. ‘Olivia must have called him to come pick me up,’ I thought, but could not understand why he looked angry rather than rushing at me and helping me. “Hey babe,” I said, placing my hand on my head as I felt a sharp pain in my head. “How dare you call me that?” He asked. ‘Was I still dreaming? Is this some kind of nightmare?’ I wondered. Just then I felt a movement on the bed. I was shocked but assumed it was Olivia. Maybe she had joined me in the night. But when I turned to see who the person was, fear gripped me. It was Jack, my boss and my sister’s boyfriend. I could clearly see then why Beck looked angry. I was still looking at the sleeping Jack with bewildered eyes when Olivia walked into the room. “Jack,” She screamed letting go of the glass cup she was holding. The sound of the crashing glass scattering everywhere made me jump. Jack jumped out of his sleep. I couldn’t understand what was happening. “I trusted you Lori, I trusted you,” Beck said still looking at me. “How could you cheat on me with my own sister?” Olivia thundered at Jack. I was confused. ‘What did she mean by cheat, it’s not as if we had s*x or anything,’ I thought as I looked down to ensure my clothes were still on. But to my surprise and fear, I was naked covered only by the bed cover. I could see my clothes on the floor beside the bed. ‘What happened last night?’ I wondered as the possibility of having had a one-night stand with my boss hit me. “I thought you were different,” Beck said. “Babe… I… I,” I tried saying something in my defence but I was out of words. “Don’t you ever call me that again,” He said in anger. “I’m sorry,” I said as tears began to drop from my eyes. “You’re sorry? You’re sorry?” He asked. “Yes, I am,” I said, ashamed of myself. “Sorry for what exactly Lori? Sorry, that you cheated on me or that you were shameless enough to have slept with your sister’s boyfriend?” He asked. “For everything,” I said placing my palm over my mouth. “You can’t be serious,” He said. “Please forgive me,” I said. I wanted to hold on to his feet and beg but I was naked and taking off the cover would expose either Jack or my nakedness which would aggravate the whole issue. “It is over between us,” He announced. “Please don’t do this to me,” I said, begging him not to let go. “Lose my number. I never want to see you again,” He said and stumped out of the room. “Please,” I said as my voice drifted into silence followed after by a stream of tears. “How could you?” I heard, I had forgotten Olivia was still in the room and so was Jack. “How could you do this to me?” Olivia asked. “Babe, I don’t know what happened,” Jack said. “Well, I do. You cheated on me with my own younger stepsister,” She said. “I’m sorry, I really don’t know what happened,” He said. “This is over,” She said pointing at herself and him while shaking her head. “Please don’t do this to me, don’t do this to us,” He said. “You did this to us, you threw our relationship over a one-night stand,” Olivia said. “It wasn’t intentional, I swear,” “But it happened,” “I’m sorry,” “Sorry doesn’t change the fact that it did happen,” Olivia said. “It’s over. I don’t want to ever see you again,” She added. “And as for you,” She said pointing at me. “You are dead to me, meet me at home,” She said and turned to leave. “You see what you’ve caused,” Jack said blaming me as he hurriedly put on his pants and ran after Olivia. ‘What I have caused?’ I wondered.
