CHAPTER ONE: THE AWAKENING
The bells tolled, deep and resonant, echoing through the vast halls of Valerius Keep. King Aethron Valerius froze mid-step, a sharp tremor running through his chest. For a thousand years, no sound had unsettled him no whisper of fate, no tremor of destiny. Yet tonight, something old and dangerous had stirred, brushing against him like a shadow he could neither see nor fight. His golden eyes scanned the throne room, alert, cold, unyielding. Courtiers froze, noblewomen clutched their gowns, and knights stiffened in silent anticipation. Only the High Seer, Morwen, moved with the courage of centuries, approaching slowly, her face pale beneath her hood. “My King,” she whispered, voice trembling. “The bond… it has awakened again.” Aethron’s jaw tightened. Seven times he had watched it happen. Seven women had been marked, chosen by fate to be his mates, and seven had died withered beneath the weight of his immortal power. He would not let it happen again. Not tonight. Not ever. Far below, in the quiet servants’ wing, Elira Noctis gasped as fire bloomed beneath her ribs. She dropped to her knees, clutching her chest, unable to catch her breath. Her vision swam with images she did not understand: a tall figure in black armor, eyes like molten gold, a castle bathed in silver moonlight, a hand reaching for her. “Elira!” a maid cried, rushing to steady her. But Elira could not speak. The heat burned through her, a strange, intimate pull that made her limbs tremble and her heart race as though it wanted to escape her body. Back in the throne room, Aethron pressed a hand over the mark that had flared to life on his chest. He could feel her, faintly but unmistakably the mortal the bond had chosen. Fragile. Untested. Too human. “She is… a servant?” he asked, disbelief and fury warring in his voice. Morwen nodded, eyes clouded with sorrow. “A mortal, my King. Outside the patterns we have recorded. Yet the threads of destiny have bound her to you.” Aethron’s laugh was bitter, hollow, like wind echoing through a tomb. “A mortal?” he repeated. “Fate has truly lost its mind.” He turned to the open balcony, letting the cold night wind whip his dark cloak. The stars burned above the mountains, indifferent and eternal. A mortal. And yet, the bond stirred in his veins, whispering of connection, of desire, of danger he could not ignore. Far below, Elira’s chest heaved, tears slipping down her cheeks as the images of the king burned brighter. She did not understand. She did not know why her soul throbbed with longing, why her body ached in anticipation of a man she had never met. But something inside her had already answered the call, a voice older than the world murmuring that she belonged to him and he to her. Aethron clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white. One look, one touch, one mistake, and she could die. Yet denying her now would not break the bond it had awakened fully, and she was already tethered to him. He closed his eyes, letting the silence of the night fill the throne room. The court held its breath. The immortal king, feared by nations and worshiped by immortals alike, felt something he had not felt in centuries "fear". For the first time in a millennium, King Aethron Valerius understood one simple truth The mate he refused was already bound to him. And loving her… might destroy them both.
