After the interview was over, Nathaniel Carter stepped out of the building with a calm expression, but his mind kept spinning. What had just happened in there felt like something much bigger than just a normal job interview.
He was supposed to be just an ordinary candidate, someone who was almost eliminated from the system for failing the retest. Yet, in no time at all, she mysteriously gets an interview call, is confronted by Thomas—a man who clearly doesn't like her—and suddenly Henry, the deputy minister of the state organization department, shows up as if to make sure she's safe.
Who's pulling the strings behind the scenes?
Nathaniel let out a long breath and looked at the sky. Gray clouds hung low, signaling that it could rain at any time. He adjusted his suit and started walking towards the bus stop, choosing not to take a taxi.
In the distance, a man dressed in black stood across the street, watching him. Nathaniel felt the gaze but didn't turn his head. He knew he was being watched.
But by whom?
Just as he was about to reach the bus stop, his cell phone vibrated. An incoming message from an unknown number.
"Coming to the restaurant downtown in 20 minutes. We need to talk. - RF"
Nathaniel stared at his phone screen with a flat expression. "RF"? It didn't take long to realize who the sender was. Robert Fletcher.
---
At the restaurant in question, Nathaniel found Robert sitting in a corner of the room, sipping a cup of coffee leisurely. The atmosphere of the restaurant was quite calm; there were only a few customers who seemed to be enjoying their lunch.
Nathaniel sat without saying a word, waiting for Robert to open the conversation.
"Did you enjoy the interview?" Robert asked without lifting his eyes from his coffee cup.
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow. "So far, quite interesting."
Robert smiled a little. "You're probably wondering why Henry was there."
Nathaniel leaned back in his chair. "I assume it's not a coincidence."
"Of course not," Robert said. "I wanted to make sure you had enough protection. Thomas is not an easy man to deal with, and I know he will do everything he can to bring you down."
Nathaniel was silent for a moment, trying to digest Robert's words.
"I must ask," he said finally. "Why are you so interested in me?"
Robert put down his coffee cup, then looked at Nathaniel with a serious expression. "Because you're special. You're not only someone who is intelligent, but also someone who knows how to move in this game. I've been looking for someone like you for a long time."
"The game?" Nathaniel squinted.
Robert smiled faintly. "The game of power. The game of strategy. Whatever you call it, the world is controlled by those who know how to play. And I want to see how far you can go."
Nathaniel felt the tension in his chest. This was more than just a normal job. Robert didn't just want to help him; he wanted to pull him into something much bigger.
"What do you want from me?"
Robert looked at her for a long time before finally saying, "I want to offer you a chance. A path you may never have thought of before."
Nathaniel waited, but Robert didn't continue right away. He left his words hanging, creating a thickening tension between them.
Nathaniel knew that whatever Robert said next, it would change everything.
Nathaniel stared at Robert, trying to figure out what was hidden behind the man's words. From the beginning, he knew that the world was not as simple as it seemed, but he never expected that someone like Robert Fletcher would take an interest in him.
"I want to offer you a chance," Robert repeated calmly. "But before that, I'd like to know... What are your real ambitions, Nathaniel?"
Nathaniel was silent for a moment. It was a simple question, but the answer was not as easy as it seemed. All this time, he just wanted to survive, to find a way to stay relevant in a world that was constantly moving. But now? After everything that had happened?
"I want to have control over my future," he finally replied.
Robert smiled slightly. "Good answer. But to have control, you have to understand the rules of the game. And the first rule is... no one is truly powerful alone."
Nathaniel leaned back in his chair, waiting for Robert to continue.
"I've been in your shoes," Robert said. "I was also just someone trying to survive. But I learned that defense isn't enough. You have to know when to attack, when to defend, and when to wait for the right opportunity." Nathaniel listened carefully.
"I want to help you," Robert continued. "Not just in work, but in something bigger than that. You have intelligence and the right instincts, but you still need protection and guidance. If you're willing to work with me, I can give you access to resources you can't get on your own."
Nathaniel tapped his fingers on the table. "And in return?"
Robert smiled. "You just need to open your mind to new possibilities. I won't force you to do anything against your will. I just want to see how you progress in this game."
Nathaniel thought hard. This offer sounded exciting, but it was also fraught with risk. Robert was no ordinary man—he was someone who knew how to manipulate situations to his own advantage. If he accepted this offer, he would have to be careful.
After a few seconds that felt like an eternity, Nathaniel finally said, "I'll consider it."
Robert chuckled. "That's enough for now."
They spent the rest of the meeting in light conversation, but Nathaniel knew that this was just the beginning of something much bigger.
---
That night, Nathaniel returned to his apartment and immediately threw his jacket on a chair. His mind was still full of the conversation that happened today.
He opened his laptop and began searching for information on Robert Fletcher. As expected, the man had a long history in politics and business. He was known as someone who had many connections, but also someone who did not hesitate to use his power to achieve his goals.
Nathaniel closed his laptop and let out a long sigh.
He knew that accepting Robert's offer meant entering a more complex and dangerous world. But on the other hand, refusing meant losing the opportunity to gain the power he had been dreaming of.
As she pondered, her cell phone vibrated again. This time, it was a message from a different number.
"We need to talk. Soon. - S"
Nathaniel frowned. "S"?
Then he realized it. There was only one person who could send a message like this.
Scarlett.
---
An hour later, Nathaniel arrived at a small café on the outskirts of town. Scarlett was already sitting there, her face serious.
"You're really looking for trouble, Nathaniel," she said as soon as she sat down.
Nathaniel crossed his arms. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Scarlett sighed. "My father. He won't just stop. You made him look stupid in front of everyone today. That's not something he can take for granted."
Nathaniel gave Scarlett a sharp look. "I was just answering his question."
"You know it's not just about the interview," Scarlett hissed. "He'll find a way to bring you down. And now, with Robert on your side, you've gotten into a much deeper vortex than you thought."
Nathaniel remained silent. He knew that Scarlett was not exaggerating.
"What do you want from me?" he asked finally.
Scarlett looked at him with an expression that was hard to read. "I want to know if you really understand what you're dealing with."
Nathaniel smiled a little. "I'm trying to figure it out."
Scarlett shook her head. "Alright, then listen to me. Don't ever underestimate my father. Don't think that you can defeat him easily. And most importantly, don't trust Robert completely."
Nathaniel squinted. "What do you mean?"
Scarlett stared at him for a long time before finally saying, "Robert may look like an ally, but he's also a player in this game. If you're not careful, you could become a pawn in his hands."
Nathaniel did not answer immediately. He was already aware of the possibility, but hearing it directly from Scarlett made him even more convinced that he should be careful.
"Have you made your choice?" asked Scarlett.
Nathaniel sighed. "Not yet. But I don't think I have much choice."
Scarlett looked at him with a worried expression. "Be careful, Nathaniel. You may be smarter than most people, but the world is more cruel than you can imagine."
Nathaniel just smiled. He knew that Scarlett cared about him, but he also knew that he couldn't back down now.
The game had already begun. And he had to play his cards carefully.
---
As Nathaniel walked home that night, he didn't realize that someone was watching him from a distance. In the black car parked across the street, Thomas stared at Nathaniel with hateful eyes. He reached for his cell phone and dialed a number.
"Yes, it's me," he said in a cold voice. "I want you to find everything you can about Nathaniel Carter. Every little detail. I don't care how deep you have to dig—I want to know everything."
He hung up the phone and stared at Nathaniel disappearing in the distance.
"The game has just begun, young man," he muttered. "And I won't let you win."
