The Last Hope
Rain hammered against the hospital windows as twenty-year-old Elena Morgan sat beside her mother's bed, clutching a stack of unpaid medical bills.
The beeping of machines filled the small room.
Her mother slept fitfully, pale and weak after years of battling illness.
Elena glanced at the figures printed on the papers. The amount was impossible
A nurse entered the room.
"Miss Morgan, I know things have been difficult for you.. I am sorry to say but no further treatment will be made on your mom until you settle the bills"
Elena lowered her head.
"I know."
"The doctor has done his outmost best."
When the nurse left, Elena forced a smile and took her mother's hand.
"Don't worry, Mom. I'll find a way."
Her mother opened tired eyes.
"You've done enough, Elena."
"No."
Tears gathered in Elena's eyes.
"I'm not giving up."
Her mother gently touched her cheek.
"Promise me something."
"Anything."
"Promise you'll live for yourself one day."
Elena looked away.
She couldn't make that promise.
Not while her mother was lying in a hospital bed.
Not while there was still a chance to save her.
***
Elena returned home that evening to her supposed family. Her father, Stepmother and sister sat at the dining table having a feast. They were the real family. Elena had realized long ago that she no longer belonged among them.. Ever since her father married that evil woman Victoria.
Elena Morgan had learned long ago that having a father did not mean having someone who would protect you.
When she was a child, her father, Richard Morgan, used to carry her on his shoulders and tell her she was his little princess. Back then, life had been simple. Their family wasn't wealthy, but they were happy.
Everything changed when her mother fell ill.
What began as occasional hospital visits soon became years of treatments, medications, and mounting bills. As her mother's condition worsened, so did Richard's patience.
The man who once promised to stand beside his wife through anything slowly drifted away. He spent fewer nights at the hospital and more time away from home. Then, without warning, another woman entered their lives.
Her name was Victoria.
Within a year, Richard had married her.
Elena never understood how her father could move on while her mother was still alive and fighting for her life.
After the marriage, Victoria moved into the Morgan family home with her daughter Chloe, a child from her previous relationship. A few years later, Victoria gave birth to a son, Jarvis. Little by little, Elena watched her place in the family disappear.
Her bedroom became smaller.
Her meals became fewer.
Her voice became less important.
Whenever Victoria insulted her mother or treated Elena like a servant, Richard remained silent.
At first, Elena begged him to intervene.
"Dad, please say something."
He never did.
Over time, she stopped asking.
The worst part was not Victoria's cruelty.
It was Richard's indifference.
Every day, he chose peace with his new wife over protecting his own daughter.
Every day, he chose them.
By the time she turned twenty, she no longer saw Richard Morgan as her father.
He was simply a man who had abandoned her and her sick mother while standing right in front of them.
Now, as she stood in the living room staring at the four of them feasting happily while her mother fought desperately for her life at the hospital, staring at another stack of unpaid bills, Elena realized she was completely alone.
Her father would not help.
And her mother's life was slipping away one day at a time.
For the first time in her life, Elena felt cornered by fate.
"Elena, get me water to drink"
Jarvis Morgan requested from the end of the dining table. Her supposed little brother. She stared at them in anger unmoving.
Then came the lashing voice of Victoria.
"Why are you still standing there, didn't you hear him.
Moving swiftly Into the kitchen, tears streamed down her eyes. Right in her fathers house, she was more of a maid than a daughter. Being ordered around by people who should have respected her and putting up with her step mothers maltreatment.
"Did the hospital finally ask for money?" Chloe asked.
Elena remained silent.
Victoria smiled.
"Your mother has been sick for years. At some point, you have to accept reality."
A flash of anger passed through Elena.
"She's still my mother."
"And this is still my house," Victoria replied coldly.
"Which means you should be spending less time crying and more time finding money."
Elena clenched her fists.
Every day felt like a battle.
Every conversation ended in humiliation.
But she had no choice.
She had nowhere else to go.
After dinner she found her father siting on the Coach on the veranda reading a newspaper
"Dad, the hospital needs another payment."
Richard sighed heavily. He didn't even look up from his newspaper.
"I've already spent enough over the years."
"Enough?" Her voice trembled. "Mom is dying."
Watch your tone," Victoria snapped, walking up to Richard with a glass of juice
"Again? Your mother is becoming quite expensive."
Elena's stomach tightened.
"Dad?"
He finally raised his eyes.
"She's your wife."
"She was my wife," he replied quietly.
The words struck harder than a slap.
Elena stared at him.
In that moment, she realized more deeply her father had chosen them.
And he had stopped choosing her a long time ago.
Richard said nothing.
And somehow his silence hurt more than Victoria's words.
That night she was unable to sleep.
The hospital bills weighed heavily in her bag.
The deadline was tomorrow.
Tomorrow.
One word.
One impossible word.
As she stared at the dark walls of the room, her phone vibrated.
A message from the hospital.
FINAL PAYMENT NOTICE.
Her vision blurred.
For the first time in her life, Elena felt completely defeated.
"What am I supposed to do now?"
The dark silent night carried no answer.
But fate had already begun moving its pieces.
Elena lay on the narrow cot wedged between stacks of forgotten boxes and broken furniture. The tiny storage room smelled of dust and damp wood. Once, she had a bedroom with pink walls and a window overlooking the garden. Now she slept in a room barely large enough to stretch her legs.
Her phone vibrated again
Unknown number
She almost ignored it
Then a message appeared
"I know about the hospital bills"
Elena's heart stopped
"Meet me at the Grand Crescent Hotel tonight. I've got an offer that could solve all your problems. Come alone"
She stared at the screen.
Who was this?
And how did they know about her mother's hospital bills?
She should have blocked the number.
Instead, she found herself wondering how much her mother's life was worth.
And what she was willing to sacrifice to save it.
