Chapter one: The Unexpected Collision
Lena Morgan hated being late.
Unfortunately, that was exactly what she was.
She hurried across the university courtyard, her backpack bouncing against her shoulders as she weaved through clusters of students. The autumn air was crisp, carrying the scent of coffee and fallen leaves, while the morning sun cast long shadows across the historic campus buildings.
"Come on, come on..."
She checked her phone.
Eight minutes until her economics lecture.
Normally, that would have been enough time. But today wasn't normal. Her shift at the campus café had run longer than expected after a coworker called in sick. She had spent the morning juggling impatient customers and complicated drink orders instead of reviewing her lecture notes.
Being late wasn't an option.
Not when every grade mattered.
Not when she had worked too hard to get here.
Most students at Sterling University seemed to treat education like an expensive social club. Lena couldn't afford that luxury. She was here on scholarships, grants, and determination.
A loud roar echoed across campus.
Lena looked up just as a sleek black sports car rolled through the university gates.
Several students immediately stopped walking.
Others pulled out their phones.
A group of girls near the fountain practically squealed.
Lena rolled her eyes.
She didn't need to ask who it was.
Alexander Sterling.
The university's favorite obsession.
Future CEO.
Campus celebrity.
Professional heartbreaker.
Or at least that's what social media claimed.
The car stopped near the administration building, and within seconds a crowd had formed.
Lena kept walking.
She had exactly zero interest in wealthy heirs.
She had bills to pay.
As she cut across the crowded pathway, someone stepped directly in front of her.
Her shoulder slammed into a solid chest.
The impact sent her books flying.
"Oh!"
Pages scattered across the pavement.
Heat rushed to her face.
Great.
Perfect.
Exactly what she needed.
"I'm so sorry," a deep voice said immediately.
Lena dropped to her knees, gathering papers before the wind could carry them away.
"It's fine."
A pair of polished dress shoes appeared beside her.
Then another pair.
And another.
The crowd had suddenly gone silent.
Strange.
Lena looked up.
The man crouching beside her was unfairly handsome.
Dark hair.
Sharp jawline.
Expensive suit.
Eyes the color of storm clouds.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Then recognition flickered.
Not from her.
From the reaction of everyone around them.
Alexander Sterling.
Of course.
Who else could make an entire campus stop breathing?
"I wasn't watching where I was going," he said, handing her a notebook.
His voice was calmer than she expected.
Human.
Normal.
Not at all like the arrogant billionaire-in-training she had imagined.
"Neither was I."
Their fingers brushed as she took the notebook.
A ridiculous spark shot through her.
Lena immediately ignored it.
She stood and dusted off her jeans.
"Thanks."
"No problem."
For a moment he simply looked at her.
Not the quick glance people usually gave before moving on.
A genuine look.
As if he were trying to remember her face.
The realization made her uncomfortable.
She shifted her backpack higher on her shoulder.
"Well... I should go."
His lips curved slightly.
"You have somewhere important to be?"
"A lecture."
"More important than talking to me?"
The question sounded playful rather than arrogant.
Lena laughed despite herself.
"Much more important."
A few students nearby gasped.
Apparently nobody spoke to Alexander Sterling that way.
His smile widened.
"I'll try not to take that personally."
"You'll survive."
For the first time, he actually laughed.
The sound caught her off guard.
It wasn't polished or rehearsed.
It was real.
And annoyingly attractive.
Lena took a step backward.
Then another.
"I really am late."
"Then I won't keep you."
She nodded.
"Goodbye, Mr. Sterling."
"Alexander."
She hesitated.
"Goodbye, Alexander."
Something unreadable crossed his expression.
"Goodbye, Lena."
Her stomach tightened.
She had never told him her name.
Before she could ask how he knew it, someone from the crowd called his attention.
The moment broke.
Alexander turned.
Students immediately surrounded him.
Questions.
Requests.
Cameras.
Expectations.
Lena used the distraction to escape.
As she disappeared into the lecture hall minutes later, she told herself the encounter meant nothing.
Just an accident.
A random moment between strangers.
By tomorrow, Alexander Sterling wouldn't even remember she existed.
Unfortunately for both of them, she was wrong.
