Welcome to the Jungle
It was four weeks after Scarlet's 18th birthday, she had gone out to see her best friend. Scarlet has bright wavy auburn that falls just midway down her back, with dark emerald eyes that contrast with her fair skin. While out she got a call that her folks were caught in the crossfire of a gun fight and were in critical condition in the hospital. She dropped her phone at the news.
"Hey Scar? What is it?" Alex asked. Alex currently had her black hair up in a ponytail, her hazel eyes flashed as she looked down at the phone and spotted that it was from a restricted number.
Scarlet started to sob and grabbed Alex in a huge hug, something that Alex never does unless something is very wrong. Alex could hear the sobs and started to rub Scarlet's back "It's going to be okay Scar, I'm here for you." After a few moments Scarlet stopped and took a few deep breaths.
"Alex...my parents are in the hospital" Scarlet managed to say in a shaky voice. Alex is surprised but looks at Scarlet, "Let me drive you to see them, you are in no condition to be behind the wheel." Scarlet just nods and hands over her keys to Alex.
Scarlet is in such a daze, she doesn't even notice that they have already arrived to the hospital and started to climb the stairs up to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Once the head nurse greets them does Scarlet get out of her daze. "..Hun, who are you here to see?" The nurse asked Scarlet sweetly. Alex answers "Her parents, the Blackman's..." The nurse nods and directs the girls to the last room on the left, "If you want to go in, you both need to suit up, to limit any possible infections, they are both stable for now, but still in a coma."
Scarlet grabbed a hair tie off her wrist and pulled her auburn hair into a ponytail, before grabbing a face mask, then she grabbed a poncho to cover her dark jeans and light blue blouse, then put on a pair of gloves. Alex followed suit, matching her best friend as they both entered the room. Scarlet covered her mask covered mouth with her gloved hand and tried to keep back the tears.
Angela Blackman and her husband Zain were barely recognizable. They both had their faces scrubbed raw and red from needing to be cleaned, Scarlet could just imagine what the fire fight held in store for them. Both of the Blackman's were intubated, had IV's and heart machines beeping.
Scarlet ran out of the room, not being able to stand it any longer, she rushed to the nearest bathroom and locked herself in and she fell to the floor and sobbed and cursed. She thought, Whoever did this, is going to pay. She felt herself growling in anger. Then there was a knock on the door. "Scar, I'm here for you...the officer needs to talk to you. Not right away, but soon."
A few minutes later Scarlet arrives outside of her parents room, the handsome officer and Alex are waiting for her. "Yes officer?" Scarlet has taken off all of the gear she had on previously. The officer clears his throat "Yes, your parents were driving home from getting groceries together, when they were purposefully shot upon by the assailants. A passerby called it in and we rushed them here-" All of a sudden lights were flashing and machines were beeping, the nurses push us out of the way as they run into the Blackman's room. "We need a crash cart!" one yells. Scarlet tries to run in, but both Alex and the officer hold her back. "They need space Scar!" Alex yells over the commotion.
A few hours later, Scarlet was sitting in a small waiting room with Alex holding her hand. They both ran out of things to talk about, waiting to hear how Scarlet's parents were. The doctor walked into the room. "Ms. Scarlet Blackman?" Scarlet stands up and nods. "I'm sorry to say that your parents didn't make it... there was too much brain damage done...we did all that we could." Scarlet drops to her knees and she starts to sob.
A few days pass and the funeral has just wrapped up. Scarlet meets with the lawyer to read the Will her parents left behind, thankfully they had thought of everything in case something like this happened to them. Mr. Blackmoor was sitting at his desk "Welcome in Scarlet, once again my greatest condolences to you about your parents." Scarlet nods, "Thank you Mr. Blackmoor, I'm glad you're still here through this time." Mr. Blackmoor coughed, clearing his throat "Yes, well Scarlet. Your parents left you everything, as expected, covering all the major finances and debts. They also have an apology letter for you, I can either read it to you, or you can read it yourself....I did help them write it down, if that helps your decision." He sat there and waited for Scarlet to respond.
Scarlet took a moment and bite her lip thinking. "Yes, please. I will let you know if I need it to be reread or paused." She adjusted in the seat across the desk from Mr. Blackmoor. He clears his throat again and reads aloud
"Scarlet, I would have hoped to have told you this information in better circumstances. Unfortunately it seems that your mother and I have passed on before we got to tell you the truth of your birth. You are a hybrid, of our coven and pack joining as one. You are part Vampire and part Werewolf. WE realize this is a lot to take in, but we were keeping you safe by keeping this from you until you first shifted. When that didn't occur on your 18th birthday, we were reaching out to family and asking of when other females shifted, either vampire or werewolf. No one could remember a time of such a late occurrence, then again the only other hybrid born was a male a few hundred years ago. Please go find the Hunters as well as the Pack, they will teach you what you need to know."
