(Jeffrey) I was sleeping next to my mate when I heard her phone ring. She turned over and looked at the caller ID. “It’s Yashira” she said, picking up the phone. I could see that Yashira was outside somewhere. Suddenly, her face came into view but all we saw was Yashira trying to scream, and I could see that she was in pain. “Yashira? Yashira, what’s wrong?” Lita asked over and over, but all we could finally get was a broken scream. I got up and ran to Yashira’s room, but it was empty. I checked the house and, lastly, I ended up in the kitchen where I saw a note from her. Abuelita, I couldn’t sleep, so I went hunting for a deer. I’ll see you when I get back. Love, Yashira. “s**t”, I cursed, running back upstairs. I quickly put on some basketball shorts. “Where is she?” Lita asked. “She went hunting. I’ll find her. I Promise”, I told my mate and ran out of the house. ‘Jake?’ I linked our Beta. ‘Jeffrey? What’s wrong? It’s late. Is Lita, okay?’ he links. ‘She’s fine, but Yashira went out hunting for a deer. She video called Lita and the only thing you could see were the woods and the pain in her face’ I informed her. ‘She went hunting at this time?’ he asks through the link. ‘She said she couldn’t sleep. I’m out looking for her, but I need your help… please’ I pleaded through the link. ‘I’ll wake Sara. We’ll find her, but keep your eyes open. Rogues have been spotted near the border’, he informs me, and I feel my blood run cold. ‘Thank you, Beta Jake,’ I said, cutting off the link. I shifted to my wolf, running through the woods close to the house and diner, but there was no sign of her. I go deeper into the woods when the stench of rogues and blood hit me. I continued to sniff the air following the stench. “Oh goddess”, I heard a familiar voice. It was Sara. I quicken my step only to step into a horrible scene. Yashira was lying on her back. Blood covered her tank top and chest. A few feet away from her was a man with an arrow stuck to his neck. Dead. He was a rogue. I sniffed the air, getting another scent of a rogue, but there was no one around. I also got the scent of a witch, but it was very faint. Maybe it was a passerby. Jake shifted to his human form, quickly pulling on some basketball shorts. What I didn’t understand was that next to Yashira was a pile of ashes, yet there were no signs of there ever being a fire anywhere nearby. “She’s still alive” Sara said. Jake picks her up. “We need to take her to the Doctor”, Jake says. ‘We can’t take her to the pack house. Bring her back to Lita’s house and we can have the doctor come and check her.’ I linked them. “We can’t. We don’t know the extent of her injuries. We are closer to the pack house. I’ll deal with Gabriel”, Jake says, and starts to run back to the pack. I ran behind him, making sure there were no more rogues. I looked at Sara to see she was holding Yashira’s bow and arrows in her mouth. In less than ten minutes, we got to the pack borders. Border patrol look at Beta Jake before bowing their heads. Sara and I followed Jake to the pack clinic. I quickly shift to my human form and pull my basketball shorts on. I ran into the pack clinic to see Jake placing Yashira on a gurney before she was taken away. Sara comes running in with Yashira’s bow and arrows. “I found her phone next to her”, Sara says, handing it to me. “Thank you” I took it and dialed Lita. I know she must be worried about her granddaughter. “Hello? Yashira?” Lita answered and I could tell she had been crying. “No baby, it’s me. We found her, but she was unconscious. Jake, Sara, and I took her to the pack clinic”. I informed her. “What about the Alpha?” she asks worriedly. “Don’t worry about the Alpha. Jake is going to take care of it and as soon as she wakes up, I’ll get her away from here. I promise I won’t let anything happen to her”, I promised. “I know you won’t, my love. Let her know when she wakes up that I love her”, she says. “I will. Now rest baby. I will stay by her side”, I told her. “Okay. I love you” she said, and a smile came to my face. “I love you too”, I told her before hanging up the phone. I stood by Yashira’s room with Jake and Sara waiting for the doctor. Minutes seemed like hours. I couldn’t help but bite my nails, shake my leg, or pace around the hall. “Jeffrey, she’s going to be okay”, Sara said, patting my back. About ten minutes later, the doctor came out. She looked at us before taking a deep breath and I couldn’t help but brace for the worse. “The blood that she had on her was not hers. She has no internal injuries. Besides her tattoo, she only has some minor scratches. I took her vitals, but there’s one thing that I cannot explain,” she says. “What?” Jake, Sara, and I asked simultaneously. “When I shined the light in her eyes, they seemed to change color for a second” Jena, the doctor says, a little unsure. “Jena, what do you mean changed color? She’s human” I tell her. “Yeah, you’re right. Maybe her eyes reflected something in the room, or it could be my eyes playing tricks on me. I have been working a double shift and I should’ve gone home three hours ago” she says before rubbing her eyes. “Can I take her home?” I asked her. “Yes, only if you can let me know when she wakes up” Jena says. “Of course. Thank you for your help”, I told her. “I’ll go get the car” Jake says. I went into the room and picked up Yashira. As I stepped out of the room, I saw Sara get up holding the arrows and bow, then follow me out the door where her mate was waiting for us. I climbed into the backseat with Yashira. I looked at her and I could see her eyes moving rapidly even though they were shut. I could sense something was different in her, but I had no idea what it was. “Do you guys feel something different in Yashira?” I asked Jake and Sara. I needed to know if it was just me. They both looked at each other before Sara looked back at me. “I felt there was something different when we found her. There was a powerful energy around her like… protecting her, but I don’t feel it anymore”, Sara says, and Jake nods in agreement. “Yeah, I felt it too. Maybe it was her parents looking out for her until we got there”, Jake states. We as supernatural believe in the afterlife and that makes a lot of sense. “What was she doing in the woods at that time of night?” Sara asked. “She went hunting for a deer. We were short on deer meat and since she couldn’t sleep, she went out hunting. I told her before I would go with her, but because of the sighting of rogues I have been putting it off”, I informed them. “I didn’t know she hunted” Jake says. “Yashira is a great hunter. On her mother’s side of the family, they have Taino blood. It’s an Indian tribe from Puerto Rico. They live out in el campo, which is kind of like a country. They would let pigs loose or go hunting. She’s really good with her bow and arrow”, I informed them. “Wow, that’s impressive" Jake says. We pulled up to Lita’s house. Jake and Sara got out before Jake opened the door and took Yashira from my arms. The front door burst open, and Lita ran out the door. “Mi estrellita. ¿Que le paso? Que dijo la doctora?” (My star. What happened? What did the doctor say?) Lita asks in Spanish, making Jake and Sara look at me. “She’s fine, my love. She just needs some rest. When she wakes up, I just have to let Doctor Jena know”, I inform her. “So, she’s not injured?” Lita asks. “Just minor scratches, but she’s fine” I assured her. “Thank the gods and goddesses” she sighed in relief. “Come on, let’s put her to bed”, I told Jake. He follows me up to her room and places her on the bed. Sara places Yashira’s stuff on the dresser before getting a change of clothes for Yashira. “I’ll be out in a minute. I want to change her clothes”, Sara said, and we walked out of the room so she could change Yashira. After she changes her, Jake and Sara leave, promising to check on her later. Lita and I go to bed a couple of more hours before opening the diner for lunch. ***
