Chapter 1: The Queen Who Could Not Die
The world called her many things. The Crimson Queen. The First Vampire. The Tyrant of Eternal Night. The Deathless Monarch. But the title Selene Voss hated most was the one whispered by terrified enemies across continents. Immortal. The word carried a weight few could understand. For mortals, immortality was a dream. For Selene Voss, it was a prison. The night sky stretched endlessly above the obsidian towers of Noctis Keep, the capital of the vampire kingdom. Moonlight painted silver across black stone walls while countless lanterns illuminated the city below. The kingdom never slept. Not because its citizens were vampires. But because its queen never did. Standing upon the highest balcony, Selene gazed across her domain. Thousands of lights sparkled in the darkness. Merchants conducted business. Children laughed in the streets. Music drifted from taverns. People lived. People dreamed. People loved. And someday every single one of them would die. Everyone except her. A bitter smile touched her lips. “Three thousand and forty-two years.” Her voice disappeared into the wind. She had counted every year. Every century. Every millennium. Not because she wanted to remember. But because she desperately wished to forget. ⸻ Selene looked no older than twenty-five. Long platinum hair cascaded down her back like liquid moonlight. Ruby eyes glowed faintly in the darkness. Her beauty was so unnatural it bordered on divine. Yet those eyes carried an exhaustion that no amount of sleep could cure. An exhaustion born from watching history repeat itself countless times. Empires rose. Empires fell. Heroes were born. Heroes died. Lovers made promises. Lovers became memories. And still she remained. Forever. Alone. ⸻ The soft sound of footsteps approached. “Your Majesty.” Selene did not turn. “I told you not to call me that, Sebastian.” The old man behind her smiled. “Then I shall continue doing so.” A sigh escaped her lips. Some things never changed. Sebastian Graves had served her for nearly eight hundred years. A remarkable feat considering he was neither vampire nor immortal. At least not naturally. The elderly butler appeared to be in his late sixties. Silver hair. Perfect posture. Immaculate black suit. A gentleman through and through. What outsiders didn’t know was that Sebastian had once been one of the deadliest assassins in history. Kings had feared him. Entire armies had hunted him. Now he spent most of his time reminding Selene to eat. A far more difficult task. ⸻ “Any assassination attempts today?” Selene asked. Sebastian checked a small notebook. “Eight.” “Only eight?” “A quiet day.” “Wonderful.” “Two demon cults.” “Expected.” “Three vampire noble houses.” “Also expected.” “One dragon.” That made Selene raise an eyebrow. “A dragon?” “He was quite rude.” “What happened?” Sebastian closed the notebook. “I threw him off the mountain.” “…” “…” “Sometimes I forget why people fear you.” The old man offered a polite bow. “It is one of my more charming qualities.” ⸻ Another voice echoed from behind them. “You forgot the poison.” A young woman stepped onto the balcony carrying a silver tray. Selene immediately grimaced. “Oh no.” “Oh yes.” The maid smiled sweetly. Which was always dangerous. Lillian Hart looked barely twenty. Golden hair. Bright emerald eyes. An innocent appearance. The perfect disguise. In reality, she was one of the greatest alchemists alive. A genius capable of creating medicines, toxins, explosives, and horrors that violated several laws of nature. She also possessed one terrifying habit. Treating Selene like a child. ⸻ “You skipped dinner again.” “I wasn’t hungry.” “You haven’t been hungry since 1728.” “I had a snack.” “You drank blood.” “That’s food.” “That’s a beverage.” Selene stared. Lillian stared back. Sebastian wisely stepped away. He had witnessed this battle many times. And knew survival depended upon staying neutral. ⸻ Eventually, Selene surrendered. Again. The maid’s victory was swift and absolute. As always. ⸻ The moment passed. Silence settled over the balcony once more. For a brief moment, it almost felt peaceful. Then Sebastian spoke. “You’re thinking about death again.” The smile disappeared from Selene’s face. Of course he noticed. He always noticed. ⸻ “I tried.” She spoke quietly. “I tried living.” The words sounded strange. Fragile. “I ruled kingdoms.” “I built cities.” “I protected our people.” “I created peace.” She laughed softly. A sound completely devoid of happiness. “And after three thousand years…” Her gaze drifted toward the stars. “I am tired.” ⸻ Neither servant responded immediately. There was nothing left to say. They knew. They understood. For centuries they had watched their queen search for a way to die. They had watched her walk into battles she should not have survived. Challenge gods. Fight monsters. Seek forbidden magic. Nothing worked. The curse always remained. ⸻ Long ago, the God of Death himself had spoken the words that doomed her. “Until you learn the value of life, death shall never claim you.” A cruel punishment. An even crueler mystery. Because after three thousand years, Selene still did not understand what the god wanted from her. ⸻ A knock interrupted the silence. One of the royal guards entered the balcony. He immediately knelt. “Your Majesty.” “What is it?” “We have received reports from the eastern continent.” Selene’s expression remained neutral. “Go on.” The guard swallowed nervously. “There are rumors.” Rumors. Normally she would have ignored them. But the way the guard spoke made something stir inside her. Hope. Dangerous. Fragile. Hope. ⸻ “What kind of rumors?” The guard hesitated. “An artifact.” Sebastian straightened. Lillian stopped moving. The atmosphere shifted instantly. ⸻ The guard continued. “Ancient records have surfaced from ruins older than the vampire race itself.” Selene’s heart remained still. Yet somehow she felt it tighten. “The artifact is called…” He lowered his voice. As though speaking the name too loudly might awaken something. ⸻ “The Heart of Twilight.” Silence. Absolute silence. ⸻ According to the stories, the relic predated kings. Predated empires. Perhaps even predated gods. An artifact said to possess dominion over life and death itself. A relic whispered about only in myths. A relic believed lost forever. ⸻ The guard took a shaky breath. “The legends claim it can break any curse.” Selene stared at him. Unable to move. Unable to breathe. Unable to hope. Because hope had betrayed her countless times before. ⸻ Then the guard spoke the final words. The words that changed everything. ⸻ “They say the Heart of Twilight can kill even the immortal.” ⸻ For the first time in centuries… Selene Voss smiled. A genuine smile. Small. Dangerous. Beautiful. And filled with anticipation. ⸻ “Prepare my carriage.” The guard blinked. “Your Majesty?” Selene turned toward the night sky. Toward destiny. Toward death. Or perhaps another disappointment. Either way, she would see it through. ⸻ “If there is even the slightest chance…” Her crimson eyes glowed. “…that this artifact can finally kill me…” A cold wind swept through the balcony. The Queen of Vampires stepped forward. And for the first time in a very long time… She felt alive.
