She took the seat he offered her and they both sat silently as they ate, Saul stealing an occasional glance towards her every once in a while, as he sipped from his glass of champagne.

-This is so beautiful Saul, thanks Cookie!- Jo commented, failing to keep her eyes from wandering all around- it´s just lovely!

-Glad you liked it, Sugar- Saul said, smiling and staring at her as if trying to figure something out.

Saul let out a loud laugh, almost choking with his drink, before finally replying. -Nah, no sweetie-pie- he said- I can barely manage to cook enough to keep myself from starving, I could never do something like that... I just had a friend´s company cater it like five minutes before we came up.

-Really?- she inquired- How comes we didn´t cross our path with any staff on our way here? There´s only one elevator after all.

-In fact, there is not- Saul grinned at her and nodded behind her- See that column over there? There´s a service lift hidden behind it.

Jo turned her head around, staring at what she´d just mistaken as a foliage-covered wall, and she frowned.

-How did you know it was there?- she asked, redirecting her attention to him.

-Because I designed it- he replied, grinning at her- It was my idea to keep this area as clean as possible. It makes a great amenity for the tenants and they love it.

-Wait! Really?- Jo muttered impressed- You designed the place you live in? How cool is that!

-Well, how else do you think I could afford it?- he said chuckling- The only reason I was able to buy it, is because the contractor gave me a huge discount on it.

-That´s amazing cookie!- Jo cheered- Then not only your loft has your name written all over it, the whole tower does!... Wow, you´re making me so horny right now!

He trailed off, looking at her unsure and gathering his courage for a second, before sighing. His eyes sparkling with resolution.

-Ok, what I´m trying to say here is that…Well, I know that we´ve been dating for a while now, but we still haven´t defined our relationship. I hadn´t said anything before cause I wanted to give you some space to work on your therapy and get better… and now that a few months have gone by I would like to make this an official thing. Because I´ve been falling in love with you this whole time and I want you to know that.

Jo stared at him for an insanely long second, her eyes watering in abject horror a hand darting to her mouth as she started crying.

-Oh my god Saul, I´m so sorry!- she sobbed- I´m still so f*****g damaged! I don´t know!

-Hey- he whispered sadly, reaching for her flailing hands and holding them down- Why are you freaking out? This is not a bad thing… I´m just telling you I love you.

She broke apart and pulled herself a bit backwards, staring widely at him. -Because I don´t know if I could ever love you back. I don´t know if my heart is still capable of doing that.

-Jo- Saul sighed- I know that you´re still working on it and I´m not pushing onto that. I´m not asking you to love me back just yet. I´m only asking you to accept my love for you and try... Maybe then we can learn together how to make this work out.

-I can´t do that. I´m not doing that to you!- Jo replied holding her hands up-It wouldn´t be fair for you to stick to a relationship that might as well never become real love, that would be just evil and I refuse to make you go through that at all.

She sniffled and stared at his perplexed look for a moment, before standing up.

-I think I should leave.

He reached for her hand with a pained expression and looked into her eyes with utter sadness reflected on them.

-Well, if you´re not even capable of taking the love that I´m willingly offering you without any false promises and no strings attached… Then yes, I think you should.

And with that she sprinted for the elevator crying her soul out as he stood in the middle of the terrace, watching the doors close and swallow her along with his hopes.
