chapter 1
The Alpha King’s Contract Bride The kingdom of Velmoria had only two rules. Fear the wolves. And never trust the king. The night Aurelia Ravenshade turned twenty-one, the moon bled red across the sky. Villagers whispered curses as thunder rolled over the dark mountains surrounding Blackthorn Castle. Candles flickered inside her tiny cottage while her stepmother paced like a hungry vulture. “You will go,” her stepmother snapped. “The royal guards are waiting.” Aurelia swallowed hard. “I can’t marry a monster.” “You can,” the woman hissed, gripping her arm painfully. “Because if you refuse, we all die.” Outside, black horses stamped against the snow-covered earth. Soldiers dressed in silver armor stood like statues beneath the storm. At the center of them waited a man taller than the others, cloaked in shadows. General Kael Draven. The Alpha King. The beast who ruled both humans and wolves. Aurelia had heard stories about him since childhood. They said he ripped enemies apart with his bare hands. That his eyes glowed gold when angry. That he had never loved anyone. And now he wanted a wife. Not for love. For a contract. Her heart pounded as she stepped outside. The freezing wind wrapped around her thin dress, but Kael’s stare burned hotter than fire. “You’re late,” he said coldly. His voice was deep, dangerous, commanding. Aurelia lifted her chin despite her fear. “I never agreed to this marriage.” Kael stepped closer. Every soldier immediately lowered their gaze. Power rolled off him like dark smoke. “You don’t have a choice.” The words should have terrified her. Instead, they angered her. “Then you’re no king,” she whispered. “You’re a tyrant.” The soldiers gasped. No one spoke to Kael Draven that way and lived. But to her shock, the Alpha King smirked. “Interesting,” he murmured. Then he grabbed her waist and pulled her onto his horse. The journey to Blackthorn Castle lasted three days. Three miserable, silent days. Kael barely spoke. When he did, it was always an order. Eat. Sleep. Stay close. Aurelia hated how her body reacted whenever he looked at her. His sharp jaw, dark hair, and scar running across his neck made him look carved from sin itself. He was cruelly handsome. And completely unbearable. On the final night before reaching the castle, they camped in the Frostfang Forest. Snow fell softly around them while wolves howled in the distance. Aurelia sat beside the fire, hugging herself tightly. “You’re afraid,” Kael said from across the flames. “I’m not.” “You tremble whenever the wolves cry.” She glared at him. “Most people don’t enjoy hearing creatures that eat humans.” Kael’s golden eyes darkened. “They only kill when threatened.” “Like their king?” Silence. Dangerous silence. Then suddenly Kael stood. Before Aurelia could react, he moved faster than humanly possible and pinned her against a tree. Her breath caught as his large hand rested beside her head. “You test me too much,” he growled. For the first time, his eyes glowed fully gold. Wolf eyes. Real wolf eyes. Aurelia’s pulse raced. “You’re not human…” “I never claimed to be.” His face lowered closer to hers. She could feel his warm breath against her lips. “One word from me,” he whispered, “and every wolf in this forest would obey.” “Then why marry me?” she asked shakily. Something unreadable crossed his face. “Because you’re the only woman who can save my kingdom.” The next morning, Blackthorn Castle rose from the cliffs like a dark nightmare. Massive towers pierced the clouds. Guards lined every wall. The air itself felt heavy with ancient magic. Inside the throne hall, nobles watched Aurelia with disgust. “She’s human?” “She looks weak.” “She’ll never survive the mating bond.” Aurelia frowned. Mating bond? Before she could ask, Kael sat on the black throne and announced coldly, “The contract begins tonight.” An old priest stepped forward carrying a silver dagger. Aurelia’s stomach twisted. “What contract?” Kael finally looked directly at her. “Our marriage lasts one year.” “And after that?” “You are free.” Relief flooded her chest. Until he added: “If you survive.” The priest cut Kael’s palm first. Dark crimson blood dripped onto glowing runes carved into the floor. Then he handed the dagger to Aurelia. Magic hummed violently around the room. “What is this?” she whispered. Kael’s expression hardened. “A blood contract.” Every instinct screamed at her to run. But it was too late. The castle doors slammed shut by themselves. The runes glowed brighter. And suddenly Aurelia felt something awaken inside her chest. Power. Ancient. Wild. The nobles gasped in horror. Kael stood instantly. “What have you done?” one lord shouted. Silver fire exploded from Aurelia’s hands. She cried out as visions flashed through her mind—dragons burning cities, wolves bowing beneath a silver moon, and herself standing beside Kael wearing a crown of ice. The fire vanished as quickly as it came. Silence filled the throne room. Then the oldest noble whispered in fear: “She’s the Moon Blessed.” Kael stared at Aurelia like he was seeing her for the first time. Not as a forced bride. Not as a human. But as something dangerous. Something powerful. Something that could either destroy his kingdom… Or rule beside him. That night, Aurelia stood alone on the castle balcony, staring at the moon. Her entire life had changed in a single moment. She was trapped in a contract marriage with a ruthless Alpha King. And worst of all? Part of her was beginning to crave the way he looked at her. As if she already belonged to him. A cold wind brushed her neck. Then Kael’s deep voice sounded behind her. “You should sleep, little bride.” Aurelia turned slowly. “What if I don’t want to?” The Alpha King stepped closer until only inches separated them. His golden eyes glowed in the darkness. “Then I’ll stay awake with you.” For one dangerous second, neither moved. The tension between them burned hotter than fire. Then Kael gently touched a strand of her hair. A surprisingly soft gesture from a brutal king. “You have no idea what you are,” he murmured. Aurelia looked up at him defiantly. “Then tell me.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “The last Moon Blessed queen nearly destroyed the world.” Thunder crashed outside. And somewhere deep beneath Blackthorn Castle… Something ancient awakened. Waiting for its queen to return.
