"I don't care how many billions you have, Killian. You can’t buy a child’s love, and you certainly can’t buy mine."

Killian Black is a wolf in a tailored suit. As the ruthless CEO of Black Industries, he is used to absolute power and total silence. But his world crumbles when a tragic accident leaves him as the sole guardian of his four-year-old nephew, Leo—a child who hasn't spoken a word since the funeral.

Enter Elena Vance. A Rebel and troublemaker behavioral specialist with a sharp tongue and a total disregard for Killian’s status. She doesn't bow to his intimidation, and she refuses to follow his "Alpha" rules. She is the only person Leo trusts, and the only woman who makes Killian’s ice-cold blood run hot.

When a rival threatens to use Killian’s "unstable" home life to stage a hostile takeover, Killian does the unthinkable. To protect his Pack, company and his nephew, he claims the defiant Elena as his fiancée in front of the world’s cameras.

The deal is simple: Six months of a fake engagement. A massive payout, that is sufficient to pay off her father’s gambling debt and brother’s tuition with no strings attached.

But as Elena moves into the Black Estate, the lines between the contract and reality begin to blur. Killian wants control, but Elena wants his heart. In a world of high-stakes business and dark family secrets, the Alpha is about to learn that the only thing more dangerous than losing his empire is falling for the woman he was never supposed to touch.

The Corporate Lion’s Cage
The Grand Ballroom of the Zenith Hotel right now gives that sense of desperation. Killian Black adjusted his gray tie, his jaw tight. He was a man built for boardrooms and hostile takeovers, not for the judgmental whispers of the city’s elite. Usually, his presence commanded silence. Tonight, it commanded pity. "Leo, get out from under there. Now." Killian’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble. From beneath a long, white-clothed catering table, a small pair of scuffed sneakers kicked out. A muffled sob followed. "No!" the four-year-old shouted. "I want Daddy!" The sound cut through Killian like a blade. His brother was gone—a car accident six months ago that had left Killian with a grieving nephew and a mountain of guilt. He was the CEO of Black Industries; he could move markets with a phone call, but he couldn’t get a toddler to put on his shoes. "Mr. Black," a reporter whispered, leaning in with a camera. "Is it true the child hasn't spoken a word since—" "Back off," Killian snapped, his dark eyes flashing. The reporter flinched, scurrying away. Killian knelt, his thousand-dollar suit trousers pressing into the marble floor. He reached under the cloth. "Leo, we have a schedule. If you don't come out in three seconds—" "Or what? You’ll fire him?" The voice was sharp, clear, and unimpressed. Killian froze. He looked up to see a woman standing over him. She wasn't wearing a gown like the other women. She wore a sharp, tailored blazer and dark jeans, her hair pulled back into a messy, defiant knot. She held a glass of sparkling water in one hand and a plate of plain crackers in the other. "Excuse me?" Killian stood up, regaining his full, intimidating height. He looked down at her, expecting her to shrink. She didn't. She didn't even blink. "You’re towering over him like a mountain about to collapse," she said, nodding toward the table. "You’re using 'Alpha' authority on a brain that currently feels like it’s being squeezed by a vice. It’s not a business deal, Mr. Black. It’s a meltdown." "I don't know who you are," Killian said, his voice dropping to a warning level. "But this is a private family matter." "Clearly," she countered with a dry smile. "That’s why you’re doing it in the middle of a gala with fifty cameras pointed at your head." Before Killian could roar a response, she bypassed him. She didn't kneel; she sat right down on the floor, crossing her legs. She ignored the gasps of the socialites nearby. "Hey, Leo," she said softly, tossing a cracker under the table. "The noise in here is pretty loud, isn't it? It feels like the walls are screaming." The sobbing under the table stopped. A small hand reached out and grabbed the cracker. "I’m Elena," she continued, looking at the tablecloth instead of the boy. "I hate these parties too. Everyone smells like old flowers and lies." Killian watched, stunned. The girl was mocking his world while standing right in the middle of it. "Get up," Killian hissed. "You’re making a scene." Elena looked up at him, her eyes bright with a challenge. "I’m making a scene? Sir, you’re the one standing there looking like you’re about to declare war on a tablecloth. Either help me or move your expensive shoes out of my light." Killian opened his mouth to have her escorted out by security, but then he saw it. Leo’s head poked out from under the silk. The boy’s eyes were red, but he wasn't crying anymore. He looked at Elena, then at the crackers. "Can we go?" Leo whispered. "Only if we go through the back exit," Elena said, standing up and brushing off her jeans. She grabbed Leo’s hand as he crawled out. She didn't ask Killian’s permission. She just started walking toward the service doors. Killian stepped in her path, his chest broad, blocking her way. "Where do you think you’re going with my nephew?" Elena looked him dead in the eye, her chin tilted up. "To somewhere that doesn't have a 'schedule.' You can follow us, or you can stay here and explain to the press why you're a better CEO than a guardian. Your choice, Alpha." She pushed past his shoulder, her scent—something like lemons and rain—lingering in the air. For the first time in his life, Killian Black had no orders to give. He simply followed.
