Chapter 1: The First Day
Emily stood in front of the massive iron gates, her hands slightly trembling as she held the small piece of paper with the address written on it. This had to be the place. The mansion in front of her was bigger than anything she had ever seen in real life. Tall walls surrounded the property, and beyond them, she could see elegant gardens, perfectly trimmed, almost unreal in their beauty. Everything looked expensive… untouchable. For a moment, she hesitated. “Do I really belong here?” she whispered to herself. Her clothes were simple. Clean, but simple. Nothing compared to the luxury that surrounded that place. She felt small just standing there. But she didn’t have a choice. She needed this job. Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward and pressed the intercom. A few seconds passed. Then a cold, mechanical voice answered. “Yes?” “I… I’m Emily,” she said, trying to sound confident. “I’m here for the maid position.” Silence. For a moment, she thought maybe they would reject her right there. But then— “The gate will open.” A loud metallic sound echoed, and the gates slowly began to move. Emily swallowed. This was it. ⸻ As she walked through the long path leading to the mansion, she couldn’t stop looking around. The garden seemed endless, filled with fountains, statues, and flowers she couldn’t even name. Everything was perfect. Too perfect. Her shoes felt too loud against the stone path. Every step made her more aware of where she was. By the time she reached the entrance, her heart was already racing. The door opened before she could knock. A woman stood there. Elegant. Straight posture. Sharp eyes. “You’re late,” she said without greeting. Emily blinked, surprised. “I’m sorry, I—” “Come in.” The woman turned without waiting and walked inside. Emily followed quickly. The inside of the mansion was even more overwhelming. High ceilings. Golden details. Large paintings hanging on the walls. It felt less like a house… and more like a palace. “Your name?” the woman asked as they walked. “Emily.” “From now on, you will follow instructions. No questions. No mistakes.” Her tone was cold, almost robotic. Emily nodded. “Yes.” “You will clean the west wing today. Do not enter any private rooms unless instructed.” Emily hesitated slightly. “Which ones are private?” The woman stopped walking. Slowly, she turned around. “All of them,” she said. Emily felt a chill run down her spine. “Understood.” ⸻ After receiving basic instructions, Emily was left alone with her cleaning supplies. The silence in the mansion was… strange. Heavy. She started with the hallway, trying to focus on her work. “This is just a job,” she told herself. “Nothing more.” But something didn’t feel right. The house was too quiet. Too controlled. As if every movement was being watched. She shook her head. “Stop imagining things.” Still… she couldn’t ignore the feeling. ⸻ Time passed slowly. Emily cleaned carefully, making sure everything was perfect. She didn’t want to lose this opportunity. Not after everything she had been through. Not after all the jobs she had lost. This time… she needed it to work. ⸻ She was dusting a table when she suddenly felt it. A presence. Behind her. Her body froze. Slowly… she turned around. And that’s when she saw him. A tall man stood a few steps away, watching her. His expression was calm. Too calm. But his eyes… They were intense. Sharp. Observing everything. Emily’s heart skipped a beat. “I… I didn’t hear you,” she said nervously. He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he took a step closer. Then another. Every movement was slow, controlled. Deliberate. “You’re new,” he finally said. His voice was deep, smooth… but there was something cold underneath. “Yes,” Emily replied. “It’s my first day.” He stopped in front of her. Close enough to make her uncomfortable. “What’s your name?” “Emily.” He repeated it softly, almost as if testing how it sounded. “Emily…” Something about the way he said it made her chest tighten. “I’m Alexander.” Her eyes widened slightly. So this was him. The owner of the mansion. The billionaire. The man everyone talked about. She immediately lowered her gaze. “I’m sorry, sir.” “For what?” he asked. “I didn’t realize—” “That I was watching you?” he finished. Emily froze. Her heart started racing again. “I didn’t mean—” He raised his hand slightly, stopping her. “Relax.” But his tone didn’t feel comforting. Not at all. ⸻ There was a silence between them. Strange. Heavy. Emily didn’t know what to do. Should she leave? Keep cleaning? Say something? Before she could decide, he spoke again. “Do you always look this nervous?” he asked. Emily forced a small smile. “It’s my first day.” He studied her carefully. As if trying to understand something. Or someone. “Interesting,” he murmured. Emily didn’t know what he meant. And honestly… She wasn’t sure she wanted to know. ⸻ “Continue working,” he said finally. Emily nodded quickly. “Yes, sir.” But as she turned around, she could still feel it. His gaze. Following her. Watching her every movement. And even when she tried to focus on cleaning… She couldn’t ignore the feeling growing inside her. Something was wrong. Very wrong. ⸻ Minutes later, when she finally gathered the courage to look back— He was gone. Just like that. As if he had never been there. Emily let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “What was that…?” she whispered. She tried to calm herself. But it didn’t work. Because deep down… She knew something had changed. From the moment she stepped into that house… Her life wasn’t going to be simple anymore. ⸻ And she had no idea… Just how dangerous this place really was.
