The rain fell hard against the city, blurring the glowing lights and drowning the sound of my footsteps as I rushed down the pavement. My clothes clung to my skin, cold and heavy, but nothing felt heavier than the message I had received just fifteen minutes ago. “We’re done, Maya. Don’t call me again.” My breath trembled as I replayed the words. Three years of my life—thrown away in a single text. And the worst part? He sent it while I was on my way to surprise him for his birthday. I swallowed the pain and kept walking. My phone buzzed again. This time, from my boss. “Maya, don’t bother coming tomorrow. We’re letting you go.” I stopped in my tracks. No boyfriend. No job. No home, because my ex was the one paying the rent. My entire life collapsed in one night. I felt tears burn my eyes, mixing with the rain. I bent forward, my hands on my knees, trying to breathe. My chest hurt—not the sharp kind, but the heavy kind, the kind that makes you wonder how you’re supposed to keep going. “Are you alright?” The voice was deep. Smooth. Controlled. I looked up. And froze. A man stood under a black umbrella, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit that probably cost more than my monthly salary. Tall, broad shoulders, eyes sharp like he was used to giving orders and having the world obey. Every inch of him screamed power. Money. Danger. I stepped back. “I… I’m fine.” He studied me for a second, his gaze unreadable. “You’re crying.” “No, it’s just the rain.” He tilted his head slightly, as if he didn’t believe me but didn’t want to push. He held the umbrella higher so it covered me too. “Where are you going?” he asked. “Nowhere. Everywhere. I don’t know,” I whispered. Something flickered in his eyes—recognition of a kind of pain he knew too well. “What’s your name?” he asked. “Maya.” He nodded once, slowly. “I’m Adrian.” Adrian. Even his name sounded rich. I tried to step away from him, but my foot slipped on the wet pavement. Instead of hitting the ground, a strong hand caught my arm, steadying me. My heart slammed against my ribs. His grip was firm, warm, protective. “Careful,” he said. Something in his voice made my breath hitch. Then, suddenly— black cars pulled up behind him. All tinted windows. All matching. All expensive. Men in suits rushed out, but Adrian lifted his hand slightly. They froze. He looked back at me. “You shouldn’t be out here alone. Come with me.” My pulse spiked. “Why? Who are you?” His eyes held mine, intense and unreadable. “Someone who can change your life… if you let me.” Before I could respond, one of the men whispered urgently in his ear, and Adrian’s expression hardened. He looked at me one last time. “Maya, get in the car.”
