Unfinished Masterpiece
{Jessica} —— I gazed into the mirror, my eyes tracing the glittering diamond necklace draped elegantly around my neck. Another extravagant gift from Alex, my fiancé. His taste was impeccable, as always. The sparkle in the diamonds seemed to echo the security and luxury he offered me. But amidst the opulence, a pang of emptiness settled within me. It wasn't the first time I'd felt this way. Lately, the lavish gestures, the designer labels, and the high-society events had begun to suffocate me. "Jessica, you're stunning," Alex whispered, his breath warm against my ear. His hands slid around my waist, pulling me close. I forced a smile, feeling like a prized possession rather than a person. Just then, my phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number: "Meet me at the Art Haven exhibition tonight. I'll be showcasing my latest collection." My heart skipped a beat. That message could only be from one person. Ethan. My childhood sweetheart. My first love. Memories came flooding back – laughter, tears, and whispers shared beneath starry nights. We were inseparable, once. But life had taken us apart. I pushed aside the nostalgia, reminding myself of my commitment to Alex. "I have a meeting with an old friend, darling," I said, attempting to extricate myself from his grasp. Alex's grip tightened. "Reschedule," he commanded, his eyes narrowing. "We have dinner plans with potential investors." My unease grew. How could I tell Ethan I couldn't meet him? That I was engaged to a man who wouldn't let me go? As I stood there, trapped between luxury and longing, I realized I had a choice to make. “Darling I have to go.” ‘ ‘ I slipped into the crowded exhibition hall, the vibrant colors and eclectic artwork enveloping me like a warm hug. Art Haven was Ethan's brainchild, a platform showcasing local talent. I spotted him across the room, his eyes scanning the space as if searching for someone. My heart fluttered. "Jessica!" Ethan called out, his face lighting up as he navigated through the throng. We embraced, a gentle, familiar touch. "Congratulations on the exhibition," I said, stepping back to admire his beaming smile. Ethan's eyes crinkled at the corners. "Thanks, Jess. Means everything to have you here." As we strolled through the gallery, Ethan shared stories behind each piece. His passion reignited a spark within me. "Your talent's grown exponentially," I said, genuinely awed. Ethan chuckled. "You always knew how to make me feel seen, Jess." We paused before a stunning abstract, its colors evoking memories of our sunset strolls. "Remember that summer we—" "Ethan, darling!" A woman interrupted, air-kissing his cheeks. I recognized the socialite from Alex's charity events. "Eleanor, this is Jessica," Ethan introduced. “I know.” Eleanor's gaze flickered to my hand, where Alex's diamond engagement ring glittered. "Ah, congratulations, Jessica! You're engaged to Alexander Thompson, aren't you?" Ethan's expression faltered. "Yes," I replied, a mix of guilt and awkwardness settling in. The air thickened. Ethan's eyes locked onto mine, his gaze intense. "Let's step outside for some fresh air." I nodded, following him through the crowded gallery. His assistant, Rachel, hovered nearby. "Sir, shall I—" "Excuse me for a bit, Rachel. I have something for Jessica," Ethan said, his voice low. Rachel discreetly vanished. We walked to a secluded section of the gallery, the sounds of laughter and chatter fading. Ethan stopped before a door marked "Private Viewing." "Come," he said, opening the door. Inside, a single painting hung on the wall. My breath caught. It was us – Ethan and I – standing on the beach, hands intertwined, sunset hues dancing across the sky. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes. "Ethan, it's beautiful." He stepped closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "I painted it after you left. Couldn't shake the memories." My heart swelled. "This is... incredible." Ethan's eyes searched mine. "I wanted you to have it." My fingers brushed against his as I reached for the painting. A spark of electricity. Our eyes met. For a moment, the past melted away, leaving only the two of us. "Thank you, Ethan," I whispered. His smile softened. "For old times' sake." The world outside receded, leaving only the art, the memories, and the undeniable connection between us. "I have to go, Ethan," Jessica said, her voice barely above a whisper, as she glanced at her phone. Ethan's eyes narrowed. "Alex?" I nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. "Tell me you're happy, Jess," Ethan said, his voice laced with concern. "Really happy." I hesitated, unsure how to respond. I loved Alex, truly, but Ethan's return had stirred up old feelings, making me question my emotions. "I care deeply for Alex," I said finally. "But seeing you again... it's brought up memories, Ethan. Memories I thought were long buried." Ethan's gaze held mine. "You still have feelings for me, don't you?" I nodded, But I'm committed to Alex. I love him, Ethan. I do." Ethan's expression softened. "I'm not asking you to leave him, Jess. I just want you to acknowledge your true feelings. You deserve to be honest with yourself." My phone buzzed again, breaking the spell. Alex's name flashed on the screen. "I really need to go," i said, reluctantly stepping back. Ethan nodded, his eyes still locked on mine. "Take care, Jess. And be true to yourself." As i turned to leave, Ethan called out, "The painting... it's yours. Keep it safe." My heart swelled. I knew I’d treasure the artwork, and the memories it represented. “You know i can’t take this home.” Ethan expression changed, obviously disappointed “It’s fine. If you're so in love with him, why are you still meeting up with me?" Ethan asked, his eyes piercing through mine, seeking the truth. I felt a flutter in my chest, unsure of how to respond. "Ethan, it's complicated," I began, my voice barely above a whisper. "Complicated?" he repeated, his tone laced with skepticism. "You're either in love with him or you're not, Jess." I took a deep breath, searching for the right words. "I care deeply for Alex.” Ethan's expression remained unreadable. "And love?" "I don't know, Ethan," I admitted, the uncertainty spilling out. "All I know is that being around him makes me feel alive in a way I haven't in years….but there’s something missing.” Ethan's expression softened, his voice barely above a whisper. "That's because you're still connected to me, Jess. To us." "What are you saying?" I asked, my heart racing. Ethan's eyes locked onto mine. "I'm saying that maybe, just maybe, you're settling for a life that isn't truly yours." “That’s enough, Ethan.” With a mix of emotions, i made my way back to my car, the city lights blurring together as i drove.
