The Divorce Papers
The steady ticking of the antique clock echoed through the silent living room.
Emily Carter sat alone on the cream colored sofa, her fingers wrapped around a cup of tea that had long since gone cold. The mansion felt unusually empty tonight, though it had never truly been a home.
She glanced at the wall clock.
Nine thirty-five.
Adrian was late again.
Not that it surprised her anymore.
Three years of marriage had taught her one painful truth. Waiting had become part of her life.
Waiting for him to come home.
Waiting for him to notice her.
Waiting for him to smile at her.
Waiting for him to love her.
She smiled bitterly.
Perhaps she had been waiting for something that had never existed.
The sound of tires crunching over the gravel outside pulled her from her thoughts.
He was home.
Emily quickly stood, smoothing the wrinkles from her light blue dress before walking toward the entrance.
The front door opened.
Adrian Kingston stepped inside with the confidence of a man who owned the world.
He looked exactly as he always did.
Tailored charcoal suit.
Perfectly knotted tie.
Sharp jaw.
Cold gray eyes that revealed nothing.
Even after three years, Emily couldn't deny he was breathtaking.
But beautiful things could still hurt.
His eyes landed on her for barely a second before moving away.
"You waited up."
It wasn't a question.
"I made dinner."
"I'm not hungry."
Three words.
Three words that somehow managed to erase the two hours she had spent cooking.
Emily forced a smile.
"I can warm it up later if you..."
"No."
He removed his watch and placed it on the marble table.
"We need to talk."
Her heartbeat slowed.
Those four words rarely brought good news.
She nodded quietly.
"Okay."
Adrian walked into the study without another word.
Emily followed.
The room smelled faintly of cedarwood and expensive cologne.
He stood beside the large mahogany desk, one hand resting on a brown envelope.
His expression remained unreadable.
"Sit."
Emily obeyed.
He slid the envelope toward her.
"Open it."
She frowned.
"What is it?"
"You'll see."
Something inside her suddenly felt uneasy.
With trembling fingers, she opened the envelope and slowly pulled out the documents inside.
Her eyes scanned the first page.
Then froze.
DIVORCE AGREEMENT.
The words blurred before her eyes.
She blinked several times, hoping she had misunderstood.
She hadn't.
For several long seconds, the room became painfully silent.
Emily stared at the papers without breathing.
Finally, she looked up.
"What is this?"
"Our divorce agreement."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"As of today, our marriage ends."
Emily searched his face, desperate to find some sign that this was a cruel joke.
There was nothing.
Only indifference.
Her throat tightened.
"Did... did I do something wrong?"
"No."
"Then why?"
He folded his arms.
"Our marriage fulfilled its purpose."
Purpose.
The word struck her harder than any slap.
"So... that's all it was?"
"It was an arrangement."
"It wasn't for me."
The words escaped before she could stop them.
"I loved you."
For the first time that evening, Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
"I know."
His answer broke her.
Not because he didn't know.
Because he did.
And it changed nothing.
Emily lowered her gaze, afraid he would see the tears gathering in her eyes.
"I thought..."
She laughed softly through the pain.
"I thought if I tried harder... if I became a better wife... one day you'd love me."
Silence.
She already knew the answer.
Still...
Some foolish part of her wanted him to deny it.
Wanted him to say she mattered.
Instead, he said quietly,
"Sophia is back."
Emily's fingers tightened around the papers.
Sophia.
The woman Adrian had loved before their marriage.
The woman everyone said he had never forgotten.
"So..."
Emily whispered.
"You're divorcing me because she returned?"
"Yes."
One word.
Simple.
Merciless.
Emily closed her eyes.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The late nights.
The distant behavior.
The phone calls he always answered outside.
Sophia had come back.
And Emily had become unnecessary.
Adrian reached into another folder.
"There are two villas in your name."
He placed another document on the desk.
"Three luxury cars."
Another document.
"Fifty million dollars."
Another.
"You'll never have to work again."
Emily stared at the generous settlement.
To anyone else, it looked like a fortune.
To her...
It felt like the price placed on three years of her life.
She slowly pushed everything back toward him.
"I don't want your money."
His brow furrowed.
"It's your legal settlement."
"I don't want it."
"You deserve compensation."
Emily smiled sadly.
"Can money buy back everything I gave this marriage?"
He said nothing.
She already knew the answer.
"No amount is enough."
She stood.
Her knees felt weak.
"If signing these papers will make you happy..."
She picked up the pen.
"...then I'll sign."
Adrian watched her in silence.
No hesitation.
No attempt to stop her.
No regret.
Emily signed her name carefully.
Each stroke felt like tearing away another piece of her heart.
When she finished, she placed the pen on the desk.
"There."
Adrian picked up the documents.
"Thank you."
Thank you.
After three years...
That was all.
Emily nodded once.
"I'll pack tonight."
"No rush."
She looked at him one last time.
"I hope she's everything you've been waiting for."
Without waiting for a reply, she turned and walked out of the study.
She didn't cry.
Not yet.
She climbed the stairs slowly.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
The bedroom looked exactly as it had that morning.
Wedding photograph on the nightstand.
His suit hanging neatly in the closet.
Her favorite novel resting beside the bed.
A life that had seemed permanent only hours ago was already becoming a memory.
She pulled out a suitcase.
One dress.
Another.
A sweater.
Some books.
A framed picture of her late parents.
Nothing else mattered.
As she reached for the drawer beside the bed, a sudden wave of dizziness swept over her.
She grabbed the edge of the dresser to steady herself.
The room spun.
Her stomach lurched violently.
She rushed into the bathroom.
Moments later, she was kneeling on the cold floor, breathing heavily after vomiting into the sink.
Emily stared at her pale reflection in the mirror.
She hadn't been feeling well for days.
She had blamed stress.
Now...
An uneasy thought crossed her mind.
Her eyes slowly widened.
Her hand drifted instinctively to her stomach.
"My period..."
She whispered the words to herself.
It was late.
More than three weeks late.
A chill ran through her body.
"No..."
Her voice trembled.
"It can't be..."
Yet deep inside, another voice whispered a possibility she couldn't ignore.
What if she wasn't leaving the Kingston mansion alone?
What if she was carrying Adrian Kingston's child?
Emily stood frozen, one hand resting protectively over her stomach.
Outside, thunder rolled across the dark sky.
She had just signed away her marriage.
Now fate had placed something far more complicated in her hands.
