Chapter 18

I had a special gift I was giving Jess when I got off work here. It was a photo of me. Jenelle helped me print it out from our computers from the work site.
And then I got a nice frame at a*****e near here. I gift wrapped it to. I was in a great mood. I was going to spend the night with Jess again tonight. I could hardly wait.
I hum to myself as I do my hair. Everyone had been talking to me all day because I had been in the newspaper with Jesse.
Many woman were asking me if I was dating Jesse. And I was so proud to say yes, I was dating him. He was my man. I hoped Becky was going to be jealous when she saw that photo.
I had to ask Jenelle to dinner. She had no dates these days. She had broken up with the last guy she was seeing.
She was single. And ready to mingle. I was going to hook her up with Joey if I could help it. She was nice enough to try to hook me up with Mark. Now I could repay her for that.
Right?!

"Jenelle? Can I ask you something?" I begin to say.
"Sure" she replies.
"Well, I am having dinner at the Tanner's tonight. And they wanted me to invite you" I say.
"Why?" she wonders as we cut hair.
"I know you have not really been dating right now. And how down you have been. Joey is such a nice guy. He will be the only one of us there with no date. He thinks you are beautiful. He told me to ask you to dinner. What do say? You met Joey before?" I ask.
I cross my fingers behind my back.
"That adorable blond that was in here a few weeks before?" she asks me. "the funny man?"
"The one and only" I tell her.
"He asked about my status?" she asks me.
I nod and lie. "He had. Well, he was shy about it. I mentioned and got the ball rolling" I answer her.
"Okay sure it might be fun" she agrees. "I do not want to feel like a third wheel around you and Jesse" she warns me.
"We will not do that to you" I vow.
"I am in" she says.
"Fantastic! Let me call Danny and tell him" I say.
I rush to the phone and make a call.
"Hello Tanner residence" someone answers.
"Is Danny there?" I ask.
"Sure, just a moment" she goes to say.
"Wait, Becky?" I stammer.
"Skyler?" she answers.
"Yes, what are you doing over there?" I ask.
"I came by to get a letter from Danny for my next job before I move back home" she answers me. "Jess let me in"
"I bet he did" I sigh. "Put Danny on the phone"
"Sure" she says.
"Hi Skyler" Danny answers.
"Letting you know that Jenelle can come over" I say. "let Joey know he has a plus one" I tell him on the phone.
"Oh, Joey will be thrilled" he says.
"Great" I reply. We hang up.
"What is wrong?" Jenelle asks me.
"Nothing" I lie.
"Are you sure you looked a little upset" says Jenelle.
"I am sure it is nothing to worry over" I lie.

I was not so sure. Jesse had Becky over while I was working. Was he not as over her as he claimed to be? Maybe it was dumb getting him this photo of me.
I began to feel foolish. I was rushing things. I was dumb. When Jenelle was not looking I toss the photo in the trash. Out of sight out of mind. He did not need that.
I really did not want to come to dinner now. Becky might crash the dinner party. Right? She could still be lingering about.
And Jesse would be hanging over her every word. Looking at her with those puppy dog eyes. I feel a headache coming on. We soon get swamped suddenly before closing time.

"One of you girls can leave I need the other to close up shop" my boss announces.
"But we have dinner plans" worries Jenelle.
"I need one to stay" he orders.
"I can stay. Jenelle you go I will meet up later" I vow. I might go on home.
"Are you sure?" she worries.
"I am sure. Joey is looking forward to you coming" I answer her.
"You will meet me there?" she begs me.
"I promise you" I lie.
"Okay" she says. We smile.
"I will stay and close boss" I tell him.
"Great thanks I owe you one" he tells me.
We get to work. Jenelle heads out on her way to the Tanner's. My heart sinks. Jess would not want me around anyway. I bet he was making up with Becky. Then later he would call me and break things off with me.
As he always did. Once I was done working everyone was gone. I sweep the floors and locked up shop. Tears surfaced in my eyes as I looked back on the love, we made last night. How special I felt in his arms. At least I could always remember that.
Becky could never love him the way I did. I lean on the broom stick. I had promised Jenelle I would go. I could not bring myself to go if Becky was there. I could not go. No way. I would tell everyone I had to much work going on to go there for dinner. Bow out gracefully.
Someone knocks on the door. I look up. I see him. Jesse waves at me. What was he doing here?
I rush to let him in. My heart racing. He pulls me in his embrace and kisses me.

"Don't you know how well I know you by now sweetheart? I know you worked to stay away from Becky. She was there to get the letter. I sent her on her way. Come to dinner with us. Where you belong sweet love" he orders to me.
Tears fall. "I was scared. That she was going to take you from me again" I admit softly.
"You have me. It does not matter what she wants. I want you Skyler. You felt that last night, right? We made love. I love you. I am so in love with you" he whispers to me as his hand cups my cheek.
His thumb rubs my cheek gently as he looks me in the eyes. He kisses me.
"I am sorry for being foolish. I love you" I reply.
"I love you to" he says. "what is that in the trash?" he asks.
He notices when he came in. The photo of me peaks out of the ripped paper. He grabs it then opens it.
"Baby why did you throw this away? Where you going to give it to me?" he wonders.
I nod. "I was. But I thought you might not want it" I answer.
"Oh, I love this can I have it?" he wants to know.
"Sure" I giggle.
"Come to dinner" he orders.
"Yes boss" I tease.
He kisses me.
We head to the Tanner's place. Dinner was in motion. They saved a plate of food for me. We all sit down to enjoy our meal. Jenelle was chatting away with Joey.
They looked so happy. I think I made a good match with them. Danny and Vicki were doing well together as well. I help do the dishes with Jenelle and Vicki as Jess went to get dessert for us all.

"Becky was trying to get Jesse back. And he tossed her out" Jenelle suddenly whispers to me. "he told her that he was in love with you and it was too late for her"
"He did? He said that?" I ask softly.
"I overheard. They had no idea anyone was listing" she tells me as Jesse comes back with Danny and the dessert.
I rush to his side. I yank him in my arms. Then plant a kiss on his lips.
"Have mercy!" he jokes. "what is that for?" he asks me.
"Nothing, I love you that is all" I answer.
He kisses me back.
"I love you to" he vows. "I mean that"
"I know" I say with a happy grin.
I really did finally know. He loved me.
