Betrayal
Jena's POV
“Jena, you are under arrest for attempting to murder the Alpha heir.” The Gamma's words shot into my chest like a metal bullet.
“What?” I stood still and numb as I struggled to voice out the word.
Gamma Victor walked up to me, grabbing my elbows carefully as he walked me out of the room while the other three guards followed behind us.
“Victor, you know me. I've been your Luna for five years. I would never try to harm anybody, not to talk of a fetus.”
“Save your explanations for the Alpha.” He spat coldly without batting an eye.
“Victor…” My voice trailed off as I realized no amount of words would make him hear me.
Is this it? My end? I did step back. I allowed them to do what they wanted. What else do they want from me?
Why this height of wickedness? What did I do wrong to deserve all this? Moon goddess, please save me from these people.
I looked up at the row of people hanging around the corners of the hallway down to the dining room, their accusing eyes piercing deep.
They had already called the council elders as my eyes could only scan a few of them.
A hand hit my face and I landed on the cold floor. The murmuring in the room increased and I tried to raise my head to see who had hit me, but that earned me another slap.
My face stung. I finally looked up and met the angry eyes of my husband, Alpha Gillian. My heart throbbed seeing him breathe high and low in fury.
“Gillian, I didn't do it.” I gathered the courage to speak. But I could see the disdain in his eyes for me. He laughed hatefully.
“Of course that's what anybody in your position will say at the first instance until they are tortured to spill the truth.”
“No..no Gillian, I didn't do it. I swear by my life, I didn't do it.” I cried, hoping that somehow he would believe me.
Everything was overwhelming. No one seemed to believe me.
“Uh! Those tears are nothing close to the truth.”
“How dare she play the victim after trying to kill the woman carrying the Alpha's heir.”
“She's unbelievable. How did she become our Luna?”
“Ungrateful b***h! She wasn't even the Alpha's mate. He took her from her lowly state and made her his Luna yet she couldn't bear him a heir and chose to kill her own best friend who carries the Alpha's Heir. How brutal!”
“She deserves to die!”
They kept murmuring. The same people I devoted my entire life to. My heart sank with every word they threw at me.
I never knew the day would come that the people I gave myself for would be the same people pulling daggers to my chest.
One moment of accusation and everyone is demanding for my death without proper investigations.
“Jena Brooke, Do you agree that you gave Mary the kitchen maid a wrap of drug to pour into Katie's food so as to kill her and her baby?” Elder Darkin, Gillian's father asked.
I looked straight into his eyes and I saw he also bought the lies. He too thought so little of me to try to kill Katie and her child.
“No.” I gathered momentum to speak. I wasn't going to accept what I didn’t do.
“I didn't give any kitchen maid anything. What chance did I have to meet with the kitchen maid when I've been locked up in my room for the past two weeks.
Clara has been the one bringing me food. She can attest to that.” I said, pointing to my handmaid at the corner, who was shocked when I mentioned her name.
“Then explain how the poison got to your wardrobe?” Gillian asked.
“Yeah! Tell us!” The crowd cheered.
“I don't know.” I said, shaking my head as tears poured from my eyes. “I swear, I have no idea how it got there. Someone is clearly setting me up.”
“Shut up! Witch!” Gillian screamed at me.
“I gave you everything, and treated you as my equal even though you were weak. And this is how you repay me? By trying to kill my child? You're wicked Jena!” Gillian yelled at me, he rushed to hit me, but was held back by his father.
“Jena, you are my best friend and I would never hurt you. But I made an honest mistake with Gillian and that mistake brought about this pregnancy.
I begged you several times to forgive me and allow me to carry this child for the Alpha because he wanted me to. You agreed to it, but why did you try to kill me and my baby?” Katie cried innocently.
I watched as Gillian went to her and held her up, embracing her while her face relaxed on his chest as she continued tearing up.
Everyone stared at her pitifully but each time they looked at me, their eyes threw daggers at me. I couldn't understand why?
Katie was my best friend from childhood. I forgave her for sleeping with my husband. Allowed her to carry his baby and now this? What more does she want? My life?
“Mary, tell us what really happened?” Elder Darkin asked.
Mary moved forward, her feet trembled, her hands were vibrating. Her fear was obvious but I was sure I wasn't the one she was scared of.
“Don't be scared Mary. No one will hurt you” Elder Darkin added.
“Luna Jena met me in the kitchen yesterday and gave me a wrap of drugs to pour into Miss Katie’s plate…”
“She's lying! I didn't—”
“Shut up! Let's hear her talk!” Gillian ordered.
“Luna Jena said if I succeeded in poisoning Miss Katie, I and my family would never suffer but if I didn't do it she would kill me and my family.
In fear, I took it and did as she said.” She began to cry and continued speaking her lies.
“But my conscience wouldn't let me watch an innocent pregnant woman die so I stopped Miss Katie from eating the food. Please forgive me Alpha.” She concluded.
“You liar! Why don't you tell them the truth! Who's paying you to say all this.” I screamed at her.
“I said shut up!” Gillian scolded.
“Gillian, hear me out. You know me…” I said, crawling towards Gillian and trying to hold his trousers but he shoved me off.
“I thought I knew you but now I know I don't. You would also try to kill me one day.” He spoke with disdain.
“Clara, Luna said you were with her all the while, is it true?”
“Yes, Elder Larkin. She locked herself in the room, crying out her eyes because she felt betrayed by the Alpha and Miss Katie.
She told me she wouldn't let Miss Katie take all she's worked for. But I didn't know she would go to this extent.”
The crowd gasped in awry as they cursed at me. I turned to look at Clara whose face was bowed to the floor. She was my last hope but has now become the final blow to my destruction.
“Clara why?” I asked, fresh tears flowed from my eyes, as I sat on the floor tired.
“I didn't do it.” I cried louder.
“Jena Brooke, it's disturbing that you still deny the allegations on you despite the convincing evidence and testimonies we've all seen and heard.
Because of this, the only way to prove your innocence is for you to eat from Katie’s plate.” Elder Darkin said, and the crowd cheered up, supporting him.
My heart beat raised. What if this was the plan all along? Forcing me to eat food that could be poisoned.
My eyes scanned the roaring crowd. There was really no way out of this. I just have to hope this food wasn't really poisoned. For my unborn baby's sake at least.
“I will eat from the plate.”
“Yes! Do.”
I stood up and the plate was brought to me by Gamma Victor. I picked up the spoon scooping the soup from the plate. My eyes staring hesitantly at the spoon I held it up to my face.
“Eat it! Proof yourself!”
I inserted the spoon into my mouth, but as soon as I swallowed the food, I felt a sudden intense burning sensation amidst a choking pain from my oesophagus down to my stomach.
I bent over, holding my belly, praying that somehow the moon goddess saves my baby.
One moment I was coughing out blood and the next there was sudden silence.
I looked up and realised I was no more in the pack house. Where was I? My eyes caught the dirty wooden floor I laid on.
I stood up, my eyes looking around the empty small room. There was no one. Nothing.
I walked to the wooden door but as I tried to open it, it went down to the ground on its own, shattering into bits.
I was confused. Where was I? Where was this place? I stepped out and looked behind, I realised it was a small ancient hut. One I'd never seen before. Now I was even more confused.
“LUNA!” I turned and saw two unfamiliar teen girls running to me excitedly.
As I wondered who the girls were, something hard struck the back of my head and suddenly everything became blank.
